Im currently looking for a new drumkit and after a while i found out about the Gretsch Catalina, which I really like and fits in my pricerange.
I noticed that the Gretsch Catalina has 2 editions; Maple and Ash.
So I was wondering if anyone could tell me the differences. If its any help, I mainly play rock/funk style on drums.

I also noticed that the Ash edition comes with an extra 8" tom while the Maple comes with an extra floortom. And i would really prefer having an extra tom instead of a floortom.

Thanks.

Ash is more like birch, ie higher frequencies, stronger attack and louder. It also has a very beautiful wood grain. So it's just a matter of what type of sound you want from the drums.

Check out these sound clips. The guy plays both the Cat Maple and Ash. May be of some use to you.

Thanks, I guess I'll be going for the ash because I really like the sound of them!

I read here and there that the Ash sound somewhere between Maple and Birch.

At 1320 the white ash hardness fall between maple 1450 and birch 1260. But for sound we can't forget the heads and tuning too ;-)
