Right now, since I haven't played drums really in 2+ years, this is my driver seat as I slowly start playing again.
Tama starclassic performer (birch) 10,12,16, 22in kick. Matching 14 with tama silent/mesh heads and Roland RT triggers and Roland TD12 module. Yamaha cymbals.

Sabian cymbals: right to left 14in AA metal-x Hihats 18in HHX O-zone, 20in AAX china, 18in Vault, 17in Vault, 19in Paragon china, 19in AA Metal-X crash, 22in AAX Metal ride.

Here's one of my two sets.

Sonor Force 3007 Jungle Kit:
16x16 Bass
8X10 Tom
12x14 Floor Tom

5x14 Vinnie Colaiuta Signature Gretsch Snare

Shown Cymbals:
Bosphorus Master Vintage 22" Ride
Bosphorus Master Vintage 20" Ride
Bosphorus New Orleans 16" Crash
Bosphorus Master Vintage 14" Hi Hats

Other set is a 6 piece Yamaha Recording Custom I purchased in 1985. Someday perhaps I'll set it up and snap a picture or two.

Cymbals vary according to need, mood and situation. I have an assorted bunch of Zildjians and a few more Bosphorus.

Is your bass drum backwards? Either way, you might want to consider buying an actual batter head, or in this instance maybe an electric bass drum trigger rather than using the stock reso bass head.

It's a mesh head, with a RT10k on it. I recently went back to an old kick trigger tower. I kept busting the mesh heads. The mesh heads are designed for silent practice, but don't hold up very well.

God, no!!! :O Haha.

Spring is coming here, yesterday was a beautiful day so I felt like taking some pics and making a little noise outside.. and no, the 24" and the rest of the gang didn't make it out of the room. It took me like 4 trips in and out just to carry this!!! I'm lazy.

The heads look really worn out with the flash on! Sonor 3007 piano black, 8", 10", 12", 14", 16". The china on the right is a 19" Sabian aaxtreme, and the little one is a 10" East china, which I believe is the same brand as Wuhan If im not mistaken. Above the hats was a broken 17" sabian b8 crash, cut down to what sounds like a washy bell, quite nice.

Thanks ! Well I'm pretty fond of them. As you can see I don't dampen them but still manage to get a well controlled sound. My toms are 10" and 12" so they're usually rather high pitched, but I tune the heads quite low, so I get the sound of 12" and 13" rack toms, but with the roundness and just idk how to explain it, a sort of brighter and more musical sound than if I were just using those sizes of toms. I can't wait to change the heads on the 16" floor for EC2s, the stock heads stop sounding even decent after a few months :-(

Mapex HZB special edition. I hate the angle of the toms, but if I make them comfortable, the sound from the 12 dies.
8. 10, 12, 16 toms, 14 snare, 22 kick. 15inch K custom dark crash, 18inch 1980's Nuvader ride (used as crash), 22 (and a half?) inch 1960's Zildjian ride, 16inch Agazarian china, 7inch Sabian Alu-bell. Various percussion items on the floor, cowbells, a cracked china, another ride etc...

Actually, it's lack of color. The shells are clear, it's the heads that are blue. Re: Rude, I bought them at a drummer "garage sale" 'cause the price was right. Just wanted an alternative to my 15" A's. Not sure how I feel about them yet.

Hi KIS,
That first kit looks absolutely beautiful ! Not to say that your second kit doesn't, but the first one really sort of opaques it. The bass drum design with the strings kind of reminds of some drums I've seen in Africa, which are tuned using the strings. Do you have other pics of the kit? I'd love to see it from other angles :-)

Whoaarr, Amedia cymbals! What series?

Absolutely! Far more pretty/wide range than any other brand I've tried. And also something different from what everybody else has. Like my Tama Warlord kit, also limited :o)

Hi-hat (14") and ride (20") are Raw Rock (quite heavy).
Crashes (15 and 17") are Ahmet Dark, or Classic Dark I believe
Splash (10") and China (16") are Thrace series, really make a very nice pss-PESHH combination :)

I'm thinking about getting another 18" crash and perhaps some lighter hi-hat and ride to use in some not-so-powerful-rock music. But I'm not quite sure about what hi-hat/ride series I'd like.

BTW, how did you get to endorse Amedia cymbals?
They're pretty hard to get here. I got them straight from the Dutch importer (for a VERY nice price). Haven't seen them in any store here yet.

Here is my Tama Rockstar kit at band practice - now featuring 8" x 10" rack tom and minus 11" x 13" rack tom. I'm loving the more defined interval between the 10, 12 and 16 toms. The new drum is a custom built Stardom Drums birch shell with paint job/laquer to match the Tama wrap as closely as possible (couldn't find a matching wrap).

Also a few extra shots are I couldn't get high enough to get everything in on my phone camera!

Thanks :D Its even more fun because all the cymbals to my left are 18'' (18'' Custom K ride, 18'' Medium Thin Crash & 18'' EFX exept for the splash witch is 8'') and so is my kick (18x15) but with 12, 8 (will be converted into a snare) 16 (not yet arrived) & 14 toms.

Thanks bud. I like the 4 piece set up. Clean and simple. I really don't need a 2nd floor tom. Just one more thing to carry. Plus, I can't seem to get a really great sound from the 16" as I do from the 14". I can get close with an EC2 on the 16 but it's not as pleasant as the 14".

I've telling everyone - since I got these and restored them in 09 - that they're 58/59 but I'm thinking they were probably made (the snare/rack and bd = 3ply) in 58 or 59. But the floor tom in 59/60. The drums were bought new as a kit in 1960 by the former owner. They're a Progressive Jazz kit (advertised in the 61 Gretsch catalog) but do not have the 4" snare drum - mine is the 5.5x14 model.

Probably more accurately - a late 50's but went-out-the-door as a 1960 Progressive Jazz kit
Tons of fun to play - especially with the calfhide heads.
Seen here with some buddies - a 53 Gretsch 3ply 16" ft and a 47 6x10 Gretsch rack tom (green).

Sorry for the terrible lighting.

The Sabian's are on the way out, hoping to get a new crash and ride over the next month or so.

Drums: Yamaha Stage Custom Advantage in Cranberry Red
10" x 8" tom (currently not used - nowhere to put it!)
12" x 9" tom
13" x 10" tom
16" x 14" tom
14" x 5.5" wood snare
22" x 17" bass drum

Cymbals: Paiste (except where noted)
14" Paiste Giant Beat Hi Hats
16" Sabian B8 Crash (to be replaced soon)
16" Paiste 2002 Crash
12" Paiste 2002 Splash
18" Paiste 2002 Thin Crash
20" Sabian B8 Ride (to be replaced soon)
15" Paiste 2002 Wild China

http://i43.tinypic.com/2ds007.jpg

I'd love to start using my 10" tom, but I'm really not sure where to put it. I have always enjoyed playing the "typewriter setup" (ie: the two rack toms shifted to the left to keep the ride cymbal where it would normally be in a 4-piece setup), but I don't want to shift my hihat any further to the left to make room for the 10" tom - just too far away to play comfortably.

I've been toying with the idea of using the 10" and 12" as rack toms and moving the 13" to where my floor tom is, and then shifting the 16" floor tom to the right of that, like this (found on Google):

http://www.friday-ad.co.uk/PhotoAds/YI/Large/YI144B514.jpg

Any other ideas?

Thanks for looking.

My 2011 Gretsch Custom USA shellpack....with 125th Anniversary 4.5x14 snare all in Champagne Sparkle. This photo does not do justice to the finish - it is incredible live & close-up.

The second photo is my 2007 Purewood African Mahogany 6pc. Different again to the late 50's Gold Sparkle and the 2011 Champagne sparkle kits. This kit has those low 'woody' very warm sounding toms and an absolute canon BD (18x22).

Sorry - I have no photos of me "behind" my drums after I sold my Rack and switched to these Gibraltar Jazz Series stands. But, you can get the 'picture' (Imagine) what it's like behind these drums.

TMHey thanks TM! The VTC sounds great IMO. It is trashy just like it's name suggests. It is fairly thin and extremely responsive. It's doesn't need to be hit very hard to open up fast. I think it's a good alternative to a china as well and it's not too sound effecty that it can't be played like a standard crash.

Are those nasty wrinkles on your 14" batter head on the overhead shot or just stand reflections?

I don't usually find greenish shells attractive, but yours with the black fade look great. At least you're playing into a wall of insulation which should have a slight overall dampening affect.

Hello,

My turn: a new acquisition. Tama Starclassic Maple in Scorched Copper Burst finish with nickel hardware. Snare is a Tama Warlord Masai with segmented bubinga hoops from Stellar Drums.

Masai before, then after, then SC pics. Enjoy! Those segmented hoops set off the drum beautifully.

Strange setups!!
I like to play what's comfortable for me instead of what's 'normal'.
I have really short arms so everything has to be kind of close! Super fast kits.
A lot of times when I play gigs I'll just use whatever kit is there - and it feels funny playing a traditional set-up.
That being said, lots of drummers try out my kits and love the layout of them because they're usually really low and everything is close together.

I actually meant the choice of instruments (huge and supershallow bass drum, roto toms,
no traditional snare, ...) than positioning. And it's not meant to be insulting.

I started playing seriously about a year ago after an almost 30 year hiatus. During that time I had a Pearl Exportish kit. Two weeks ago I received my Gretsch Renown Fusion kit. There's a 20" kick, 10", 12" toms and 14" floor tom. I got the 14" x 5" snare.

The sound of the kit is phenomenal but I won't get into that in this thread (but it is SO PHENOMENAL). My Peal kit, plus the Gretsch kit I owned before it were full of toms and this set will be no exception. Trouble is while I could get the core kit right away, the 8", 13" and 16" drums are on order.

Zildjian 20" Ping Ride
Zildjian 16" & 17" Rock Crash

My snare is a Pearl 6"x10" Popcorn. It's all Maple. I love it because of the crack it makes! I now use it as my main snare and moved my 5.5"x14" off as the side snare. I think it just makes me sound a bit different!

This is my 68' Rogers kit with a 65' Ludwig Acro and Meinl pies. I love it!

Yeah, best Meinlers forever!
...but I may be letting the 14" Extra Dry go. Since I have the 18", I can later match it with a 18" Traditional Med-Thin and use a 14" Traditional Medium as x-hat.

You talking 18" Hats? That sounds sick. Reminds me of Ronnie Vanucci or Pridgen's hats. I'd like to eventually get something brighter, maybe something bigger too. But for now I'm just filling out my essential setup.

Meinlers unite! Haha

I use them.

Beauties.

And it complements the visual of your kit so well too...

I don't know about the drum heads, but those shells really look remarkable.

One of my old kits. The roto toms are huge - a 14" and an 18". The bass durm is 28"X9" and the snare is 14"X6".

And a view of what I'm playing now.

Wow, that snare looks very interesting!

They sound really good! I'd definitely invest in them if I was you. I didn't know what to expect when I got them but as soon as I tuned them up nice they sounded really big and deep, very clear sound as well.

I lowered my rack toms about as much as I feel comfortable doing so. Perhaps in the future I might do a 20x20 bass drum to get the same feel as the 22x18 but have the ability to lower my toms even more so. I like to keep everything as low and easy to play as possible.

That's a gorgeous looking set up!
