Loops shut off on my spd-s when I hit the other pads too hard/too much. How do I set it so that they don't shut off unless I want them to?

I had the same problem, but it's easily fixed. I don't have my SPD-S here, so I can't remember the exact settings, but I think what you want is a setting on the wave itself... Just play around with what you find there.
I won't be using (or seeing) my SPD-S for another week, but if you still haven't figured it out then, I'll check it out for you.

Loops shut off on my spd-s when I hit the other pads too hard I think you answered your own question here, don't hit your SPD-S so hard. Just look at it. It's shaped much like a laptop. Treat it more like a laptop, than a log drum. Beating on it will not make it play the patches any louder. Loops shut off on my spd-s when I hit the other pads too much. Again, you're hitting it too much and/or too often. Refer to page 31 of your owners manual, "Number of waves that can be reproduced simultaneously" ........ 8 voices.

Hitting hard or often has nothing to do with it. There's a setting on the wave file that makes it "take priority" over the other patches, which means that playing other pads won't stop playback of the loop or sample.
And hitting hard (or soft) will most definitely make a difference. You can have velocity control anything from volume, pitch, filters and effects to triggering different sounds based on how hard you hit the pad.
