The thread discussing the Neal Peart performance on the Buddy Rich tribute seemed to bring up an argument about what it means to swing. I figured I would post a few videos to give some good examples:

Sonny Payne, driving the Count Basie Orchestra:

If you didn't see it, I posted this one of Bobby Durham in the other thread:

Gene Krupa:

Feel free to add more.

Great links, all.

Have to admit bias towards Gene Krupa and the BG Orchestra, though.

Here's Sing Sing Sing with video footage:

Also love Drug Boogie with Gene going right off the deep end: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRjQzSwmEHw - the man could even swing with a box of matches :)

Wow! Great links everyone. Thanks for posting this. I worked on my swing yesterday for an hour or so. God awful, but I'm trying. I'm also a little too heavy handed on my bass and snare comping.

It sure is fun though.

Those are great clips. I love the way he plays with the matches like they're drumsticks. How can you not love Gene Krupa? I have to add this one as well:

I have to promote my man Jimmy Smith, who owned the Hammond B3. this is what I was listening to in the late 60's when not listening to rock. Some of this is a blast to play along with. Kenny Burrell on guitar and Grady Tate on drums.

That great Shelly Manne clip had me thinking of this. He did the original famous studio drum track on it. Jack Sperling KILLS it with his own swinging take on it in this TV spot Ken.

I have to be honest Stan, I have tried to like Coltrane, But I could never warm up to him.
I don't know why? I get Miles and Monk, but Coltrane eludes me for some reason.
I do like Elvin though! No problem there!

He played with cut down shortened Tom Gauger #16's {when Tom actually made them} at that time Bob and yes he played them with both ends of the sticks both live and in the studio.

Still have 4 pairs of them in my stick collection shortened to the same length as Bob's seen in the clip after he turned me onto them when meeting and hearing him during a show from the same tour as the clip. Amazing clear woody stick click sound on the ride cymbal for recording using the tip end on this shortened maple stick which made Bob really hot about them at the time.
