COVERAGE AREA

Long Island/New York City

VENUE (WILL TEACH AT PUPIL'S HOME or HAS A TEACHING STUDIO or BOTH)

I offer lessons out of my drum room in Long Beach, NY and I will also travel to students located in Manhattan. I also fly once a month to the Palm Beach Springs area in Florida to teach privately, so if you live in the area I can meet with you as well.

I also offer private lessons online using the Skype program for students that I cannot travel to personally.

EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS

I have been playing for fifteen years and teaching for almost ten. I have studied with the late Al Miller, completed studies at the world renowned Drummers Collective in NYC, and I currently study and perform with Billy Martin (of Medeski Martin & Wood) and master percussionist Cyro Baptista (of Beat The Donkey, Sting, Paul Simon, and more).

STUDENT LEVEL (BEGINNERS or SPECIALIST FOR ADVANCED DRUMMERS - PLEASE SPECIFY)

I accept students of all levels, beginner to advanced. Lessons can cover any and everything, including but not limited to: reading, counting, almost all styles of music, independence, phrasing, soloing, playing musically, developing your own voice on the instrument, creating themes, and more!

LESSON DETAILS (length and price)

For private lessons held out of my drum room, the rates are $30 for thirty minutes and $50 for one hour.

For lessons in NYC, rates are $75 for one hour (due to transportation fees)

When flying out of state for intensive lessons, rates are $75 per hour plus hotel fees.

For private lessons online using Skype, read the following:

The first step is to send me your musical background, an example or two of your playing, and what you want to achieve in our lesson. This way I can have several ideas prepared for our session. From there, STUDENTS HAVE TWO OPTIONS:

SINGLE SESSION: you can schedule one custom tailored thirty minute session for $25, which the student will receive a video of as well.

MONTHLY PLAN: you can schedule 4 lessons a month for a total of just $80. On top of the four live sessions, this plan entails me creating a flexible curriculum for the student, which they will receive via a pdf file or word document, and video recordings of each live session·

PAYPAL AND MONEY ORDERS ACCEPTED

I also teach a multitude of exotic percussion instruments, including: surdo, pandeiro, cuica, triangle, ago-go bells, timba, and more!

In high school, I played snare drum in the marching band for 4 years. I was also an All-State percussionist three times, and was blessed to play concert band and orchestral music with some of the best high school musicians in the state.

I am a recent graduate of Lee University. I have performed with many fine groups at Lee, including the wind ensemble, jazz ensemble, percussion ensemble, and orchestra, as well as other groups. I was briefly a percussion performance major when I began college, but graduated with a business degree and a minor in music.

Student level:
I most commonly teach students between elementary and high school age. However, I will certainly take adult students who are interested. My students are usually beginners, although I can also help intermediate students.

How can I help you?
I am prepared to help you meet your individual goals. Some of my students want to be better prepared for school band, and I can help these students by focusing on the snare drum and mallet instruments. I can also help students prepare for junior or senior clinic auditions, or help students get ready for marching band drum techniques.

The majority of my students have been primarily interested in learning to play the drum set. This is also my own biggest focus, and is what I enjoy playing and teaching the most. I can help you gain the skills you need to play whatever music you most enjoy, or prepare you to play in your church, school jazz band, or anything else.

Hello there!

A short introduction to begin:

My name is Steven Parent and I am currently teaching drums at my home in Prescott. I have been an avid drummer for 7 years, being a part of many great bands in the area, pursuing studies across all different genres and styles, and incorporating a whole slew of differing techniques and aspects of drumming into my daily routine. I do whatever I can on a daily basis to better myself as a drummer and an educator.

I am now offering drum lessons for a limited number of beginner to advanced students who will be taught in my practice room at home, where we will cover a wide variety of concepts, techniques, and other vital hands-on knowledge. I uniquely shape each lesson to your previous experience, learning style and which direction you wish to move in( if any, that may be the reason you're seeking drum lessons!).

Some of what we may cover, but definitely not limited to:
- Proper matched grip technique, to maximize comfort and minimize injury potential
- Imperative universal music knowledge I feel all drummers should know involving song structure and time signatures(Odd time signatures too)
- Reading music, learning drum notation, and important rudiments
- How to shape yourself into a versatile drummer, being desirable to different musical situations, tips to make those musical encounters go smoothly, and gigging do's and don'ts!
- Hands on advice on many different drumming techniques, including building hand speed, double bassing, playing different rhythmic structures, utilizing the drum set in varying ways, maximizing functionality and creativity in the process, structuring drum parts, and much much more
- If desired, advice on Drum, Cymbal, Head, Stick, and Equipment selection

So, if you want to take your rhythmic understanding to the next level or if this sounds like it appeals to you regardless of skill level, don't hesitate to contact me! Any questions, concerns, more information? Give me a ring!

Hello all.. I'm new to the site. I'm not a drummer myself (i just fool around on them at home), but my 8 year old son is. He's had an interest in drums since he was 3 yrs old. His first drum set at 3 was pretty much just for making noise. He finally destroyed it. His 2nd drum set he received when he was 7. This is a full size drum set. I wanted to see if it was a passion, or just something he would lose interest in.. It has become a passion for him. He is now the drummer in our church band, and has had a few bumps in the road, but still has a desire to play and can keep his rhythm. The problem i see is, he loves the riff's or drum rolls (if that's what is called) in a song, but tends to lose count and messes up his rhythm. When this happens, he stops for a second and regains the rhythm really quick. Correct me if i'm wrong, but i stress to him to just keep time/rhythm for now and not worry about the "cool" stuff. That will come later.. You guys have any tips for an 8 year old beginner?

thanks.....

Well you are doing the right thing! Timing is of critical importance and keeping it even more so ;)

Though i understand your sons eager to play the bad ass fills etc. He needs to be able to keep time and once he can and it flows naturally it will be a lot more fun.

But most important of all: keep playing.

Anyone currently or recently taking lessons from an instructor in the Raleigh-Durham-Chapel Hill area of North Carolina? I am specifically looking for someone who can teach an intermediate-advanced to advanced drummer. Any suggestions based on your experience with an instructor is appreciated.

I strongly reccommend John Hanks, the drumset instructor at Duke University. His email is jhanks@duke.edu Tell him that Tom Smith's son Matt steered you to him.

Thomas Taylor at North Carolina Central is another great teacher if John doesn't pan out. Use the same introduction.

The drums are the one instrument you should not need a teacher for. You either have the beat or you don't. If you need a teacher to read music that's a whole different story and a waste of a drum set. Put some headphones on and play your favorite music if you start to pick it up then keep going, if not sell the set

I don't agree at all - everyone has there standards - you want to play 3 chords on a guitar grand same for drums - you want to play like a pro get lessons simple as that !! ask any of my students - in particualr advanced students that have gained a huge insight into offtime drumming or offtime fills - stuff you never feel - teaching is the only way forward to be the best!!

What is the average cost for drum lessons? I want to make sure I am not paying too much.

Sr. Instructor PC Houston
10-19-2011, 04:06 AM
Average cost for a 30 minute lesson is about 20 dollars at the store/school I currently teach at provided the student is on a monthly billing schedule. Single lessons are 25 dollars per 30 minute session.. If you are a beginner or intermediate drummer level wise, this is pretty close to what you can expect. Advanced lessons run about 35 to 40 dollars per 30 minute sessions.

Keep in mind that there are many very good drummers performance wise that offer lessons. The question is if they can teach what they know effectively. A legitimate instructor will offer a free first lesson so that the instructor and student can evaluate one another.

I offer LIVE Streaming drum lessons via my website weekly. I teach 4 times a week (2 beginner/intermediate lessons and 2 intermediate/advanced lessons). A monthly subscription allows you to watch all of the live lessons as well as visit the Live Lesson Vault, where a months worth of past live lessons is kept. So if you miss one, you can still catch it as many times as you want to in the vault. Each lesson also comes with a PDF download of the sheet music. There is a chat box below the screen in the live lessons so that you can ask questions to me real time and get answers immediately. I also provide full email support for all of my online students. I've helped students choose everything from molded in ears to what type of beginner kit to buy.

Subscriptions cost $24.99 a month, which is extremely cheap considering you'll be getting 16 half hour lessons a month from a professional and working drummer (former major label artist, major label artist credits, Grammy nominated former students).

Email me at Stephen@StephensDrumShed.com for a free trial or to ask any questions you may have.

The internet based drums learning experience had been made much more unpleasant as a result of disorganized drums lessons scatter across many websites.

I agree with you. There's alot out there and not alot of it makes sense...bits and pieces floating around the worldwide intrawebz. I'm trying to fix that on my end...I aim for my live streaming lessons to be just like a private drum studio. And so far it most definitely is...students ask me questions live time, I answer them right there and if they need a further answer they can email or call me personally. All of the lessons are organized in a live lesson vault and can be viewed and reviewed at any time. I'm with you...we need to get online education organized! It can be a very legit way to learn the drums if done correctly.

does anyone know of any drum teachers in Cumbria, England?
My first drum teacher ripped me off by trying to get me to repeat the first Trinity Guildhall piece over-and-over-and-over again -_- so i left and didn't pay him. my second left me waiting at a train station, for an hour or two, in the middle of winter because he "didn't check his phone" - even though he knew i was coming.
So i need a reliable one this time, I'm hesitant to even pay for lessons again, considering i got ripped off of around £80 of my hard earned pocket money at the age of 11.
