View Full Version : How big is TOO big (in regards to double bass)?

Disclaimer: I use diameter X depth, ie 22x18.

The big question I have is, how big is TOO big to use a double bass pedal on? I'm working on a 24x20 10 ply Keller shell right now, but I've heard that will be way too boomy and unresponsive to rapid hits to make it useful for double bass. And I'd like to have the option to double bass, at least for my own learning purposes if nothing else. So how big is too big, for a second bass drum? 22x18 is a standard and works well, 20x20 has rave reviews (minus the 20" depth detractors, "Stop the F*ing fad!"). Anything else? Any ideas?

Size is only one aspect.

Head selection, and muffling options would also play into this.

As in muffling? Muffle anything enough and you can get a more defined sound?
