Hi Folks,
for those interested in old style drumming, I have just released a new DVD/CD bocx set called Ragtime Revisited with pianist Martin Litton & clarinettist James Evans. Music is mostly Scot Joplin & Jelly Roll Morton. The drumming demands mostly press rolls . woodblocks, rims and choke cymbal.
I've posted a 10 minute promo video here:

John, I'm a rock player and I think I'll buy your CD set! Ragtime is so far removed from my usual listening it makes such a pleasant change. I like the honest recording methods that really let the instruments breathe in their own space. The playing's exemplary. Well done and thank you so much for bringing your work to the attention of DW members.

Thank you for your generous comments.
It doesn't matter what style you play, you need the rudiments.
Making this album was quite restrictive as far as what I could play to get the period sound.Pre 1930 the time was kept on the snare drum not the cymbals - I did cheat and use the Hi-hat, which of course was not around in the days of Ragtime - and I did use the ride cymbal on the out chorus of King Porter and Eccentric.
I used fout mics and there was very little in the way of sound enhancement on the recording. The acoustic at St Johns is very good indeed.
My earlier CDs were recorded direct to stereo with just 2 mics. I like the open sound.
We got the entire album recorded in about 6 hours.

Really great john!, I love that video and style, I think playing that way with many rudiments and maintaining the tempo of the snare drum can really help with the sense of time, also i really love the "room miking"i think that things sound very perspective on that way, ever is good to have two beautiful Blondie gold plated Neumans mics at home :P
thanks, peace

Itīs nice that people still play this kind of music. Itīs also nice to see that you care about authenticity and it really makes a big difference since Itīs almost a part of the music itself. Really professionally done.

Thank you Rodrigo. The style is based on Baby Dodds and the other great New Orleans drummers. I have some articles about them with some MP3 clips on my history page on my website.

Thank you Thaard. You can't play this music without having spent years studying it. The whole New Orleans style - the early style was so special.
