What's up drummerworld?

I'm new to the forum and I wanted to pick people's brains a bit about whether or not anyone knows anything about hip hop tuning and/or technique. I'm currently in a band called "A Cool Stick" (acoolstick.com) and I'm doing my rudiments and such to keep my chops, but I'm finding it hard to be creative on the kit while playing really straight forward music.

I don't mean to ask people how to be creative, but aside from ?uestlove and Travis Barker (SOMEWHAT), I feel like there aren't a lot of hip hop drummers to look up to.

Thanks fellas.

Tony Royster Jr (http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=tony+royster+jr&search_type=&aq=f) Plays w/Jay Z. He is a pretty good drummer!

Notice though when you see most of his videos on YouTube, you just see a great drummer.

Same for you bdaranda. Just be the best drummer you can be. Be a good drummer, and everything that involves, and you will work. Most drummers are well rounded. Whether you are playing country with Faith Hill. or Rock, or Hip Hop, people usually choose good drummers. You audition. And, if they like you they will ask you to stay.

Hip op, just like any other kind of music requires you to keep the band together and on schedule, so to speak. Use your metronome and become a solid drummer. Work on your technical abilities. Work on your musicality. Learn Jazz. This will open your mind and body to great new experiences that you will take with you no matter what kind of music you play.

The kind of music you eventual play is determined by the bands you audition for. You will be selected on your abilities.

But, Check out Tony. He will inspire you...

Also check out JoJo Mayer (http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=jojo+mayer&search_type=&aq=f). He does a lot of Drum and Bass. He is one of the best drummers of our time. imo.

search "gospel drummers" or "gospel chops" on youtube. they are the people who do most of the live playing for hip hop. nissan stewart, aaron spears, teddy campbell and gerald hayward are a few of the big names. it gets really really redundant but they can all shred so hard. and they get all the big gigs.

I teach and play quite a bit of hip hop. Your best bet is to check out James Brown's drummers. Focus on playing the groove. Forget chopping out with fills. Just provide that grooves with as much heart and soul as you can. There's plenty within a basic funk groove to keep one interested, provided the player is focused on making the music groove with a pulse. Place your ego aside and give in to it.
