Hey everyone,

I'm starting this thread because I want to offer drummers something a little different than the usual drum vids. Recently, everything seems to be about double bass, moeller technique, and playing as many notes as possible. I'm hoping this thread acts as a refreshing change and introduces drummers to something a little different. Enjoy, and by all means PLEASE LEAVE YOUR THOUGHTS!

Heres a few vids to get started...

interesting...also overwhelming...its like when you're foruming and there's a post that's too long and you dont want to read it even though it might be really awesome. watched video #1 and checked out a couple others...some of that hammerax stuff is tasty.

Hey Mundo, thanks for checking out some of the vids! Yeah, I definitely posted a lot of vids but I did it because I didn't want to make 20 separate posts. I figured that might be perceived as spamming. Anyway, I'm glad you're enjoying the vids!

Hi, welcome to the board.

There's some stuff you've got going on that I really like. I obviously (to those around here who know me) like the sound sources, etc - and the using-the-butt-of-the-stick for drum&bass, sticks-scraping-the-cymbals, etc (extended techniques, yay!)

But there's a few times here and there during grooves where you hit a slight...hiccup, and I assume it's having a lot to do with just playing/experimenting and thinking about what sound source you wanted to go for. But there's *just enough* of a hiccup that I would say that certain aspects can tighten up in your playing - but without losing the integrity of the feel that you're going for - which I love.

I *really* like your overall feel around the kit. I'd love to see some clips (or just audio) of you with a band. I keep seeing a dude behind you in the studio with an acoustic guitar. Get that dude mic'd up!

The stuff I wasn't into was the free soloing stuff. I thought the composition of those two (that I heard) lacking... They didn't move me. Seemed more like isolated exercises in a vaccuum, rather than pieces with emotional depth and surprise. I listened to these tracks several times - eyes open watching you move around the kit, and eyes closed, trying to get different perspectives in my criticisms/accolades.

There's some nice ideas but I find myself naturally tuning out at parts, maybe not enough contrasts or internal battles within the pieces...or enough pyrotechnics or brooding subdued developments... I dunno...

But don't get me wrong - I really really like what you're doing and where you're coming from, and it's great to see another person on the board with some different approaches. Again: Welcome!

Thanks for the support guys!

As for the "hiccups" (I like that term too), many of them are intentional but a few are exactly that- hiccups. As you guessed correctly Colonel, everything in these videos is one hundred percent improvisation...experimentation caught on film in the moment. My biggest drumming influence is Billy Martin, hence the looseness and the willingness to play around with clams.

If you want, you can download a free mixtape I just released that has pieces by various artists, myself and Billy Martin included. Here's the download link for "Heavy In The Beats Volume 1 - A Different Drum" http://www.megaupload.com/?d=AGH33YP5

Thanks Therma! I've been playing for 15 years now.

Very nice! Seeing as how I'm just getting started into drums, anything and everything is helpful to me, and it is nice to see something other than blazing double bass and tom fills. Once I get my kit (less than 4 weeks now!! woot) I will definitely work some of those as exercises. Thank you for sharing!!

Hey Nytak, thanks for stopping by! It's good to see some up and coming drummers are trying to learn more than just extreme drumming. There are already SO MANY examples of that style of playing, and it's steering a lot of younger drummers away from one of the most important aspects of drumming - GROOVE! I hope you enjoy the rest of the vids and thanks again for showing support!

Thumbs up, Kindbeats. Your play with fabulous feel and style and I normally don't care for solo postings.

My rock ears aren't as fine-tuned as The Colonel's so it was all good to me (unless you want to point something out and I'll see if I can pick it up). Especially liked the Baião Drum Solo and Groove and Solo Compilation, but I only cherry-picked a few because I'm a lazy old cow.

Groove on :)

I have the exact same feelings as the colonel here. Great feel and great approach overall, especially all the nice soundsources you use. Just a whole lot of real nice creativity.

On the other hand I do see the hiccup issues as well and it does bug me at times. There is a fine line in between playing loose and playing sloppy which you tend to cross at a few points. Don't get me wrong: I think it's totally cool to go for things and to play extremely loose in order to achieve a certain feel. But you do have to watch out not to kill the groove with that at certain spots. Critique on a very high level though I guess....

:)

You should check out Han Bennink or Pierre Favre, I'm sure you'd love what they do (in case you don't know them already).

Oh and one more thing: If I were you, I'd raise all my drums (especially snares) by at least 15-25 cm. Your drums are setup way too low. Not for my taste but for your back. I did the same thing for years and got some serious back issues out of that. As a result I had to invest a lot of time in back exercises and a lot of money in doctors. I never quite got the inital reason for my back problems though until I watched a clinic with Dave Weckl who adressed that exact issue of setting up drums too low and therefore causing back problems. He basically told the audience to set up the snare at the hight of your belly button (which at that time seemed way way way too high for me) and the rest of the drums higher than that or at least as high. Even though this really seemed awkward to me at the first moment, I gave it a shot and after some months it not only felt much better, but also all my back issues vanished. Just something to maybe think about.

Ok, I see. Like at around 0:55 and 1:30 in the Groove and Compilation Solo?

In that vid I love the cowbell feels around 0:20, the bells around 2:05, the tom slides around 2:30, the crazy bells at 3:30 (hell, I just like bells!), and the thunderstorm-to-raindrops section at the end is really creative.

As an amateur, I tend to forgive glitches when they are surrounded so much imagination and colours. It's more of an issue for me to hear glitches within a structured song. Not diminishing the value of the other comments at all, just my perspective.

Thanks for the drum height info, Lutz. Hmm, my snare's way low ...

keep it simple

A wonderful mix of head in the clouds, feet on the ground creativity in a musically deluded world. Loose and organic to the point of being catasrophic on occasions but very personal as a result. All your playing has a "friends around the camp fire" feel to it and I like that a lot.

Yeah! "ALa" Billy martin, the master of organics sounds!,i like it! it is "bien latino""mucho groove"
is good to see people who are interested in the Latin roots and mother africa, we met here in Argentina on a circle drumming to make some music, other peoples can tell us "Indianssss" lol, but joining always do one thing in common is one of the best form of Love; all the best for you! peace.

Hey everyone,

Thanks so much for taking the time to watch some of the vids and give me your thoughts!

I'd like to address the issue of "hiccups" for a second since it's come up. First off, I'd just like to clarify that when I said some of the hiccups are part of my sound, I was by no means denying that there is a legitimate mistake here and there, because there definitely is. Instead, I was trying to simply explain that some of the things I do INTENTIONALLY may be perceived as sloppy or a hiccup, depending on the listener's tastes.

Now that I cleared all of that up, I'd like to take one more moment to state my PERSONAL belief on self expression and "hiccups". My favorite musicians have always been the ones who surrender themselves to the moment, and instead of viewing a mistake as bad thing they use it as a muse. Some of the drummers that are heralded today as the end all be all of drumming are some of my least favorite drummers to listen to, simply because they're so precise and technique obsessed that their playing lacks raw emotion and passion to me. It's almost as if they're afraid to try and let go, afraid to end up playing a note they didn't CALCULATE. As technically proficient and impressive as the playing may be, it does little if nothing to MOVE me. Now I can't stress enough that I am not bashing these drummers or anyone for liking that particular style of drumming. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions. I'm simply stating my PERSONAL preference and approach to the instrument.

Sick Rick, thank you for the great info on proper posture and drum placement. I'm sure many people will find it extremely helpful, as I did! I actually don't usually play with my drums so low. Believe it or not, it's because my throne is shot to hell and won't stay up! lol I'm finally getting a new one within the month. Then I'll be raising my kit back to normal heights.

Again, I'd like to thank everyone for taking the time out to watch, listen, and contribute their thoughts to this thread. It's great to see drummers interested in something a little different!

Thanks,
Andrew

Your playing is cool and creative I prefer freeform as opoosed to structured solos
but your back posture hurts me to watch in some of the clips.
FYI you need to search more as there are a ton of creative drummers out there too many to keep track LOL

Hey Tim,

Thanks so much for checking out the videos, and I'm glad you enjoy them! It's an honor to hear from you! I actually have a slight case of scoliosis and my throne is broken, hence the bad posture. I'm aware that there are a ton of creative drummers, I'm just trying to show people my own personal approach. Again, thanks so much for taking the time to check out my playing! I'd love it if you would check out my drumming mixtape and tell me what you think! The download link is posted in my signature. Hope to hear back from you!

Sincerely,
Andrew

Thaard and Tim,

Again, thank you so much for checking out my music! I'm glad you like it! It's just a small taste of what my upcoming album will sound like.

For those of you who have asked to see me with a band, there are two below from this weekend. This past Sunday, I played my first gig with Colleen Rennison and The New Breed. I was given the task of putting a group together for Colleen (who is an unbelievable singer) in a hurry, so this group has only been together for a little over a week! It's only going to get tighter! I hope you enjoy!
