Driving down the road listening to my Bloze and The Stones "Beast of Burden" comes on the radio, man that snare sound makes the hair on the back of my neck stand up. Of course it helps that Charlie puts it in just the right spot.
Now I want to know what snare, heads, mics , what drugs, what he had for breakfast, boxers or briefs, did he abstain from sex, full moon ect.

Oh that is easy! Alex Van Halen's snare on So this is love from the Fair warning album. You can just feel those giant sticks wailing and making everyones ears hurt, which is a good thing of course! It's like the other night when we were playing outdoors and they said to tone it down or the cops would shut us off, so I grabbed my trusty AVH sticks and gave every snare hit from then on a huge rim shot that just killed!

Another vote for J. Bonham! Listen to track 23 from these outtakes... http://www.saladrecords.com/bonhamfiles.htm
Killer snare (most likely a Ludwig LM402) from the Master of rock drumming.

"Moving Pictures" by Rush.
The whole album. Just a complete masterpiece.
The snare drum was so pivotal in Tom Sawyer, YYZ, Red Barchetta, and Limelight.

besides bonham,
i think brady blade has some great mid-range rock snare sounds on dave matthews' solo album, some devil. particularly in "so damn lucky," "save me," and the outro of "too high."
steve jordan, to me, nailed the perfect high rock snare sound on john mayer's recording "in repair." honorable mention to "bold as love" on the same record.
but, my favorite recorded snare sounds belong to stanton moore. the drum nation recording of "sprung monkey" has the most graphic sound of a snare i have heard. more than any other recording, i feel like i am in the room watching the snare. i also think his recordings, "(late night at the) maple leaf," "(who ate the) layer cake?," and "chilcock" have great sounding snares.

I'll concur with just about any Bonham, Watts' "Beast of Burden" [and many others too], and Peart on "Moving Pictures" & more, and add Phillip "Fish" Fisher on Fishbone's "Reality Of My Surroundings" and "Give A Monkey A Brain...", Dave Abbruzzese on Pearl Jam's 2nd & 3rd albums, Dave Krusen on their 1st, Matt Cameron on Soundgarden's "Superunknown" and "Down On The Upside" [Badmotorfinger is a great sounding record but not so much the drum sound] as well as Pearl Jam's latter 4 albums, any Mike Bordin on Faith No More albums, Chad Smith on the Chili Peppers albums he's on... Chad Sexton on most of the 311 catalog and just about any Steve Jordan for a cranked high-pitched snare... Oh, Mitch Mitchell always had a great snare sound in the more primitive 60's recording techniques. [Tried to stay away from overly-processed sounds, which is difficult.] That's from the top of my head, which I could make explode from overthinking this. :)
I guess you can tell I'm mostly reared on 90's rock, eh? I'm sure there are plenty of other terrific snare sounds in other genres.

Here's what I can think of at the moment. I have dug up some links to where you can hear it too.
1. Mary Margaret O'Hara - Year in song (Michael Sloski: drums)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i35mAvFY7pw&fmt=18
I have always loved the sound and playing in this song. Very groovy. Awesome snare. Theres a bit of room ambience in the sound.
2. Siouxsie & the Banshees - Little Sister (drums: Budgie)
http://tinysong.com/7jQx
Incredible song. The sound of the drums...wow. Budgie is an awesome drummer.
3. Simon Phillips - Red Rocks (drums: Simon Phillips)
http://tinysong.com/alKE
The songs on his first album are nice, the drawback is that all instrumemnts except drums are synth sounds, so it's a bit mechanic. But the drums and playing is terrific. I love this snare sound and the way it's recorded. I also love the hi-hat and everything else.
I was really lucky that I found this song so you can hear it.Simon Phillips is my biggest influence, I have to say.
4. Saga - The Victim (drums: Steve Negus)
http://www.amazon.com/The-Victim/dp/B0017YR4E8/ref=sr_1_19?ie=UTF8&qid=1253920793&sr=1-19
I only found a sample. This song is very groovy. I haven't thought of the snare particularly before, I just like the overall sound of everything. But it's a nice snare sound. Steve Negus is another favourite of mine.
5. This Ascension - Alex Kidd (drums: I don't know)
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B001DZ2Z0O/ref=dm_mu_dp_trk4
Just a sample. The drummer isn't remarkable, but I came to think of this album since I've been fond of the sound of the snare on it. There's quite a bit of room ambience to the drums.
If you liked the Red Rocks song, you should also like Slofunk from the same album:

Not really a "rock"-snare, but the SOUND of this snare (not the song) once made me become addicted, and it was the reason why I wanted to learn to play the drums....while the wurlitzer ate all my pocket money, just for to listen to the intro of that song over and over and over.......a friend of mine stil owns a wurlitzer and it is stil unbelieavable how this snare sound rocks the machine, like it was recorded specially for jukeboxes, just to make kids throw in their money...

besides of the sound, please notice that the whole groove is based on the snare only.

Rootheart, that was cool. That used to be my mom's favorite pop song. Now I've heard it in a completely new way.
Here's another one of my favorites. Not necessarily a unique snare sound but really nice.
The first note of the song is a beautiful snare pop. Crisp with a little ring and a little bit hollow but still with a good body. I play this song all the time and it's my starting point sound for when I put a new head on my brass snare.

Phil Collins made it big because of his snare sound...with his recordings he once created a new standard for snare sound..I suppose those early days, electronic drums have been invented just for the one reason to make Phil´s snare sound available for any drummer, and all the upcoming electronic devices had some kind of competition: which brand offers the best "Phil Collins -snare sound"..this competition is still going on, I guess...
Cool that the accent of this thread is on "recording", cause whatever you hear is all EQs and all that, but never the snare drum.
Does anyone know the snare on 'one headlight'?. . .Its one of those sounds that just bring back a flood of memories. . .
Someone said in a prior thread that Matt Chamberlain's snare on that track was a 13" jarrah block snare by Brady. Not sure if that's the case, although you could probably email him and ask him.
I love that song and play it regularly. Try to make it all the way through without going to a crash. Bet you can't. Ha.
I think it may have had some compression, filters, delimiters, gating or other electronic augmentation but hard to say. Very nice snare sound.

I love almost all the 70's snare sounds, and may be early 80's as well.
After that all snare sound too tecno or too perfect or something, which doesnt sound real to my ears.
Charley Watts snare sound is special,, however he admits that it is the engineers that make them sound good, which I can relate.
I love the snare sound on Alchemy album by Dire Straits... Terry Williams is the guy who does sit still.

Absolutely! Also agree with mrmike ... always loved Bill's snare sound. From an interview:
PM: How was your famous ‘cake tin’ snare sound, much copied by other drummers in prog bands, developed?
BB: “Necessity is the mother of invention. There were no mics on the drums when I started and Chris Squire was awfully loud. So I started banging out rimshots with as much cut as possible to get through the racket. I guess you could say it became a signature. The fashion of the day was for snare drums to be a deep, dead, wet ‘thud’, so my open ringing sound seemed a bit weird in that context.
Cake tin?? I might have to start buying some cakes ...

The Discipline album by King Crimson. Bruford's old Bell Brass sounds killer throughout.I thought that was the Tama 8056 6.5x14 Steel... When I saw them on the "Three Of A Perfect Pair" tour, that's what he was using then. In any case, I love Bill's snare sound on all 3 of those records.
I have to second anything where the engineer did a good job getting a natural open tone out of an LM402 (Bonham, VanHalen, etc...), that drum has a very distinct sound. Glad I own one!
I have to also chime in on Neil Peart's Moving Pictures snare sound. Perfect. Not that I'm terribly into Rush these days, but his Snakes and Arrows snare sound is really rich and full. I don't think there's too much processing on it either, it sounds pretty natural.

That's interesting. I was going to say Neil Peart's snare on Moving Pictures. Didn't Terry Brown get fired after recording Signals because the sounds were so dull? That's how I remember it, anyway. NP's always had a great ear for snare sounds, IMO. Even Snakes and Arrows has an unusually good snare sound.

Definitely Bonham's snare sound throughout Zeppelin. 'Til Tuesday's song "Voices Carry" has a great snare sound. "Back in the high life" by Stevie Winwood has a great snare sound. I believe I read that the snare used on that tune was a very old Black beauty. Bonham's snare on "Trampled Under Foot". Bruford's snare on any of the '73-74 King Crimson stuff. Phil Collin's snare on Genesis "Live".

I have always really liked the sound of Matt Camerons snare on Soundgardens "Superunknown" album. Specifically on the breakdown in Outshined. Absolutely perfect.Outshined was on Badmotorfinger and Matt used a (brass?) piccolo snare on that one. Superunknown used a deeper Kepplinger steel snare. Very different snare sounds, but both cool in their own ways.
Driving into work this morning, I had the radio on and a Chilli Peppers song came on... KANG! KANG! KANG! on every 2 and 4. Man! Does anyone really like that snare sound? Wow.
...Bruford's snare on any of the '73-74 King Crimson stuff... I really loved his snare on the "big 3" King Crimson records (Discipline/Beat/Three of a Perfect Pair). I tuned and played rimshots on my snare like that for years after hearing those!

Ha, I think I know what you mean, although I blame the recording engineer more than the drum tech in that case. Good high pitched snare sound, but way too loud on the recording.

Re: "Two Princes" I heard that was an Austrailian drum, possibly a Brady, but I could have my wires crossed. Does anybody know?
True. It's a Brady piccolo. Aaron Comess has a photo of it on his Facebook page.

Tracer mentioned "Kashmir" by Zep and I will go a little deeper in the song. The fill Bonham plays with the phase shifter on the snare is one of the coolest sounds in all rock drumming.

Have another listen to The Uplift Mofo Party Plan......I always really liked the sound that Jack Irons got out of all his drums on that album.......still definitively Chili Peppers.....but remarkably different to Chad's sound.

Jack's going thru a few different snare sounds on there, isn't he? Some sounds like it's got a fair amount of processing on it, but nothing that sounds like the shallow steel ringy thing that Will Ferrell was headaching me with this morning. Hallelujah!

Buy it, Mike......my favourite RHCP album (I think!!). I'm a big fan so it's sort of like being asked to pick my favourite drummer.......no can do! But I think the involvement of both Jack and Hillel Slovak was a great precursor to the Chili Peppers who found fame and fortune.
Can't disagree with the "shallow steel ringy thing" though. Steel has always been my least favoured shell material. Luckily I've always found so much more going on with that band to concentrate on, than the snare sound.

I've devoted many a moon to studying this phenomenon, and I have a personal preference for Tama snare drums based on the following recordings:
Dave Lombardo - anything with Slayer
Charlie Benante - Anthrax "We've Come for You All"
John Tempesta - Testament "Low", "First Strikes Still Deadly"
Morgan Rose - Sevendust "Seasons"
Kenneth Schalk - Candiria "What Doesn't Kill You"
Dave McClosky - Tavú "Tavú"
Neil Peart's sound on Moving Pictures to me is Tama-like, altough conventional wisdom and general convention mention the Slingerland, I've played both, and it sounds like Tama to me...
So...I have three Tama snares, my favorite being my 5.5x14 birch performer. Engineers love it and so do I. A sound-man friend recorded us live in an in store and got me a great sound which, I dare say, is one of my favorite ever...enjoy...
(WARNING: THE FOLLOWING TRACK IS A METAL SONG - USE OF DOUBLE BASS AND CRASH CYMBALS THROUGHOUT THE SONG IS EXTENSIVE AND MAY OFFEND SOME LISTENERS; MUSICAL DISCRETION IS ADVISED)
The Wise One (Live) (http://www.filacteria.com/Filacteria/music/wise_one.mp3)
--- THE BONZO DISCLAIMER ---
Bonzo's Supra is also amazing (as is Alex's Bronze version). However, Jeff Martin gets a KILLER Bonzo-esque (overall) sound on steroids on a little known 90s blues rocker: Blood, from Red Sea...

I am not a fan of Chads snare sound on the Chilli Peppers work at all, but it seems that this is more of a true recording of his sound:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HH06XbMwgQc - I really like this. A really good sounding album actually.
But generally I'm a sucker for Steve Albini drum recordings...

The drum sound on PJ Harvey's Rid Of Me may be my favourite ever.

Taylor Hawkins' snare on The Pretender (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SBjQ9tuuTJQ) (especially the intro) has always knocked my socks off. I'm pretty sure it's some flavor of a 6.5x14 brass. Black Beauty? Tama? Gretsch? Who knows, but my Pearl Sensitone brass sounds EXACTLY like that with very little tuning effort.

John Bonham's snare sound on Moby Dick is probably my fav. snare sound... that, or Carter Beauford's snare sound on Ants Marching.
John's Snare- (most likely) * 14"x6.5" Chrome Supraphonic 402 Series Snare
Carter's Snare-a Ludwig LB417T Black Beauty Supra-Phonic snare drum, 6.5x14" with a die-cast hoop on the batter side and a triple flanged hoop snare side
Both have very VERY dif. sounds but both are unique :)

Hm.
-Another vote for Pearl Jam's "Ten".
-Bonham.
-Jimmy's sound on "Geek U.S.A." on Siamese Dream. Most of the SP tracks have good snare sounds, really...
-I will shamelessly say Vanessa Carlton's "Be Not Nobody". Abe Laboriel, Jr.'s snare just has so much crack, I love it..

Gotta be honest, between the band The Outfield and Guns'n'Roses ...great drum sound... made me want to play. The intro to Paradise City...clearly defined an era.
I was always weak for the late 80's fat-ness too
John Fowler brought the big stuff with Steelheart. Bobby Blotzer, Mick Brown. What's his name from Great White?

Check out "Blue Tulip" by Okkervil River, just heard of the band for the first time a couple of weeks ago. But it's a nice fat snare sound: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZPHYFSRIxk
Umphrey's McGee- "1348"- Nice and punchy. (this is the only video I could find on youtube with the studio version of the song-- sorry that it's guitar hero, but you can still hear the snare. it also sounds almost like a sampled snare for some reason, but i'm pretty sure it's the real thing) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B81_rWs8jbc&feature=related

I agree. That part on Outshined was pretty beastly i have to admit. The sound of Matt Cameron's drums on the Badmotorfinger album where weird, but they fit the mood of the album IMO.
I'm glad to see that a lot of my favorite drummers are getting mentioned. :D

My favorite would be a tie between :
1) Mickey Curry's snare on Alice Cooper's Hey Stoopid album. I love that 'loud crack without a lot of depth' sound. Bob Rock was the producer, so its very probable there's all sorts of engineering going on, but it still sounds killer.
2) Scott Philips on Alter Bridge's One Day Remains album. Great, powerful, with just enough overtones to give the drum presence.
