The saxophones all sat up front while the percussionists were in the back goofing off and having fun. Well..."Hot Cross Buns" on sax wasn't nearly Clarence Clemons cool, so I opted for fun and switched to percussion. A great decision on my part. ;)

Don't know if it's odd, but drums is the instrument I've spent the least amount of time learning, but it's the one I find myself progressing faster on. I've played guitar for 10 years, piano for 7 and various kinds of brass instruments for 9 years.

How did you start drumming?
Drumming was my first love when I was a little kid, and I had a drumkit for a couple of years back then. However, I never got anywhere, so I picked up the guitar instead (and god quite good at it too). But about three years ago, my roommate at the time got an electric kit, which I suddenly found myself spending a lot of time on. I bought my own e-kit 18 months ago, and I sold that in march this year to get my Mapex kit. I'm never quitting again!

how did you start drumming- Grew up with a long family history of drumming. My dad got me into it at a very young age by buying me a snare drum for the concert band program at school. Although before that he was teaching me all kinds of rudiments and what not that I would just tap out on the table with my hands. Then finally, maybe 5-6 years ago, I actually got my first drum kit. It was a 1963 vintage Slingerland kit. I love that drum kit! We got it from my grandma's cousin. He was a Pro drummer many many moons ago. He also gave us a whole trunk full of percussion equipment, all of his cymbals (which my drum teacher and several vintage collectors around here claim to be Zildjian A cymbals from the early 70s, maybe late 60s. I still use a couple of those, and they sound awesome with my other A Customs. My cousin even gave me his old Speed King pedal! That thing flies! So yeah, I stopped using that kit this past winter and bought my PDP LX series kit in a Cherry-Black fade. Beautiful. And thats how it all started for me. =D

how did you get started- My dad'd side of the family has a whole line of musicians, famous ones. I played drums when i was really little , but had my first kit and wasn't used to play , but like bang on them. Then, i lost interest in them. I started playing guitar for a few yrs. Then, when i was nine i got into music very seriously and liked the way the drums sounded. They kept the band alive. So i started playing the drums. I was a slow starter. Not liking any metal at the time, or having any influences I really didn't kickoff until 6 th grade where i joined the school band. I saved 2 of our concerts when our best drummer didn't show up. Then, in 7th grade i got tons better. I played in my dad'd band a few times, playing Metallica at home with my junk kit. Then, when i entered 8th grade when i was 13 goin on 14, I really became good. I was our school's best band drummer. My dad's band's drummer gave me some videos of drummers. I got hooked on dennis chambers. I learned how to do triplets, and one footed rolls, even though he doesn't do it as fast as i can. I learned how to play awesome grooves and solos, and fast hands and feet. I haven't found a better drummer to learn off of yet, by far. A few months ago like in may i got Giant drum sticks that are bigger than baseball bats, and have gotten a lot faster and a lot stronger, and my one- footed rolls which i play on my right side of my foot on my right foot, on my toe came with training for boxing, and other sports. Just wanted to say hello to everyone here. Bernhard I think you have and continue to do an amazing job on this complete site. I know how much time it takes to create and up keep a site like this. Great work my friend!

A little about myself; I started playing the "air drums" ;) when I was just five after seeing KISS for the first time on TV. The drummer just captivated me and I was hooked. Every song I could listen to I would try and find the drums in it and copy it to the best of my imagination. Eventually I got a real bass pedel, I was so tickled pink of that I thought I was playing the big time (As billy would say ;)) Later on, on my 8th birthday I got a real kiddie drum set, I played with it for about 1 week and the skins broke on me, so back to my trusty air drums. When I turned 14 I got a bitter-sweet present from my dad. I got the real thing this time, a full fleged drum set. Unfortunately a few days later my dad died in a car crash (Which could have been because of his bad heart.) hence bitter-sweet gift. All of my feelings and energy went into that drum set. My favourites, Bonaham, Phil Colins, and Neil Pert. I managed to intertwine all of their styles in with mine and I was off. When I turned 19 I had to move away from Montreal and couldn't bring my drums with me and so one thing led to another, years past without playing and just resently I got another set. I did some work for a guy and we traded, work for the drums. I think I got the better deal. ;)

Anyways, so all this to say who I am and why I'm here. I've looked around the internet and found some good spots for lessons to get back into it, been practising for the last three years but mostly resent. The drum set has grown in that time to double so now I'm up to a 12 ps w/dbass. The last little while I've really gotten the bug again and it's time to get my skills back. And it's such a dam good stress releaver!! |-))) So that's me in a nutshell. Hope to get a lot of good friends from here that have the same passion as I do, and from the looks of it, I think I did. :) Later guys and gals.

How did you start drumming - When I was a kid I could hear the local drum and bugle corps practicing on Saturday mornings and Tuesday evenings. I could always hear the drums over the distance and I loved the cadences. I then managed to get permission to travel to where they were practicing and I'd watch the practices. I was hooked.

are you in a band/s? "The Figgie Pudding" a VERY tenatively named band that my guitarist (Blue Jay) and my bass player came up with..mostly the bass player. Also "Synesthesia" a different band with the same guitarist and several others...we're currently very new to playing with each other but I expect some GREAT stuff once everyone gets back from vacations, etc. and we actually start working together (yes...we're THAT new to each other). Mostly though, I'm known a "hired gun" type locally. I get calls all the time from local musicians that need a drummer for recording or gigging...or bands that need me to replace their drummers for certain gigs, etc. People know me as someone that's professional, focused, can get the job the done, and most importantly, do a GOOD job with whatever type of music that's thrown at me.

covers or originals? A hearty mix of both...for most "gigs" around here, covers are the only thing that fly, but there's nothing I love more than doing originals. There's somehting completely freeing about being to play to a song that has never been put to drums. It's the only thing we musicians really have that compares to a "blank canvas" and I for one, LOVE laying down some "fresh paint".

what style of music? All kinds...I've played in straight shout church bands, classic rocks bands, big bands, three piece jazz groups, funk, heavy metal, and yes..even contry bands. There's no music out there that I don't think isn't worth at least trying to play at least once. You learn from EVERYTHING.

favourite take out food? Umm...Pizza is the universal food. You can get anything on it. My favorite was from this super hip place where I grew up called "Milan's Brick Oven", it was a chicken, potatoe, onion pizza. Sounds wierd...but it was delicious. R.I.P. to that pizza place...I found out that it's recently closed it doors.

one really odd fact about yourself? When I was very, very young, I had an accident with my left hand and a lawnmower...sound crappy? ...I had no idea just HOW lame. My finger nearly got cut off..and apparently there was a lot of nerve damage in that hand. My right hand technique involves a lot of finger work for finesse and speed...but my left hand literally CAN'T work the same way. I've spent of my drumming life having to develop and use a more moellerish technique to use with my left hand. ...super lame.

how did you start drumming? I played sax in my junior high band..and we played "Wipeout"...and for some reason, I kept watching the drum solo. I kept thinking to myself "You know what...I can do that. It's just one hand..then the other!" So I made the band director let me try it out on the quads...and BAM. Wipe Out. First try. From there on it was just a matter of finding out as MUCH about drums as possible...my first big inspiration was Dave Weckl...Imagine me...a kid who had never even SEEN a drumset hearing "Hard Wired" for the first time. I heard one of his solos...and I was completely hooked. The rest, as they say, is history! (well...history being a REALLY relative term...Hopefully i'm more of a "work in progress" !!)

how did you start drumming: When I was 2, I would drag out all my mom's pots & pans and hit them with her different cooking utensils. I started concert band in 5th grade and learned about music notes. I got my first "real" drumset @ 13 and spent hours everyday trying to figure out how to play KISS songs on the set. Once I figured out the whole 1&3 / 2&4 thing, it was easy! Mom would sit on my bed and listen as I played for hours. God bless her.

My surroundings dictated a switch over to electric when I was living in military dorms and apartments…I worked overnight shifts and during my days off (or nights in my case), I could play with headphones and not wake a soul. I still have my old Tama Swingstar set (white), with Sabian cymbals. Now that I have a house and space, I may incorporate the pads with the acoustic set.

Hi,

My name is Andrew Hewitt, I noticed my name in the wishlist quite a while ago, but Ive been too busy to come into the forum and say Hi.

Im a 35yo drummer based in Sydney, Australia who despite being born with Cerebral Palsy has managed to clock up over 15 years professional experience as a performing artist, clinician and drum teacher.

My CP mainly affects movement in my arms and legs, parts of the brain to tell certain parts to work properly doesnt respond as it should.

My parents bought me a drum kit in 1980 thinking it would be a good form of physical excercise for me, they would have never guessed that I would be doing what I am doing today.

Biggest thing for me was to be included in Modern Drummer's On The Move section in April 2004's issue, then having an update written in MD's news section in June this year.

Its been a long hard battle trying to overcome certain physical issues. Im using an acoustic kit with triggers running through a Roland TD-8 Module.

Best gig I played last year was at the Sydney Opera House in front of 450 people. Was a real buzz.. the room had a really cool vibe to it, on stage all you could see was a sea of people.

Howdy folks. I've been checking out to see if there are other drum forums on the internet. So far, this is the second one I've found. Hope to find out what's going on with some of you drummers on the forum. Actually, drums were not my first love as far as instruments go. I originally was fascinated by the guitar when I was young, and then I went over to a friend's house that I went to high school with and found out he played drums. I messed around with his set off and on, but went on to pursue the guitar. I also had a love for the bass guitar, and played it in many many bands, as well as six string guitar. I played drums a few times briefly with a few bands, but never for a long period of time. For the past 7 or 8 years, I've mainly been playing drums in my recording studio, but have recently joined a band as a drummer. I've always enjoyed playing drums and I'm happy that I'm finally playing drums full time now. Happy drumming!

how did you start drumming? i played sax in school band (junior high 6th grade), in 7th grade i switched to Bassoon, when i got to high school (9th grade) they said, NO MARCHING BASSOONS OR YOU'LL KILL YOURSELF, so they handed me some mallets and i played in the pit (frontline percussion) in the marching band. we were good! 2nd place in the state of Texas! then i thought one day, it'd be cool to play drums. so i air-drummed for a year and a half before i even played on a kit. first time i played on one was the day i bought it. i already knew how to play (sort of) from air-drumming. so.. yeah.. high school band taught me everything i know.

Odd fact- Back in the eighties I played on a Rock band in Venezuela that never became too famous to make the cut. We had the chance to produce two records. Our second record was so commercially unsuccessful that next year of their production you could find it almost free at record stores, however I don't know how it became a rarity and last year I saw somebody bidding for 300 $ at ebay for a copy of that record!

How did i start drumming- My older brother is a Classic Piano Player, when I was 5 years old, I played "maracas" (a venezuelan folk instrument, it souds like a shaker) with him in family parties. I fell attracted to percussion instruments. When I was 9 years old I saw a drummer on a band and starting at that moment I asked my dad to buy me a drum set. They were too expensive in my country, but I never give up. Finally, I bought my own drum set with saving the earnings of my first job when I was 19 years old.

one of em was a southern rock band with some real funky stuff goin on, and one was a metal band called amish acid dealer which was headed in a direction i would describe as "grindcore bebop" before we kinda went our separate ways and myself and one of the guitarists (who's also a great pianist) started playing a lot of free jazz with some other dudes...needless to say, i need to get back home because i miss all of it.

one really odd fact about yourself?
hmm...kinda hard to narrow it down to just one...but it is really odd that i didn't start playing until after i moved out of my parents' house even though my dad was a drummer (semi-pro, gigged in bar bands for like 30 years) and there were drums in the house during most of my growing up years...
how did you start drumming?
funny story...

i was 19 at the time, and i was playing "tony hawk's pro skater" (the first one, on original playstation). i had the warehouse level maxed out on points, like, over 600,000 (which was a lot on the first tony hawk game). to do it, i'd have to repeat a certain unbroken line of tricks several times within the alotted two minutes, and since the number of points for each trick decreases with repeated use, i had to improvise the order of the tricks i was stringing together within the larger line. it's necessary to keep variety in mind when doing this in order to keep the scores high and not depreciate the overall value of each successful line, but at the same time you have to tastefully apply the tricks because there are some that will just make you fall down and lose all of your points if you try them at the wrong moment. when i was doing this i had recently dropped out of college, and i would spend hours after work each day "practicing." when i realized that i had been spending so much time learning to coordinate a long, complex, time-sensitive, repetitious combination filled with minor but important improvised phrases of button-pushing over the course of a couple minutes, i thought, "hey, that's kind of like playing a song, maybe i should start learning to play my roommate's drums instead of this video game..." eventually i got my own drums, and eventually i quit my job and dropped back into school. i'm a fast learner, apparently, but i have a lot of lost time to make up for. so any time that i get discouraged about having such a late start, i just remember that jim chapin didn't start until he was 18...
