Nice. My mate gave me his old leedy kit, which i subsequently killed. It's a shame that they don't make decent drums any more really. I think it's just a brand name for some cheapo chineese jobbie or something.
keep it simple

Real name? Austen
Age? 17
How long been playing? 6 months now.
Origin of user name? Favorite drummer: Questlove of The Roots. I used to just replace the "A" in my name with a question mark, but people thought it was the word, "question." So I figured I'd just take the same nickname.
Top 5 drummers? Lee Finkelstein, Questlove, Keith Moon, Brad Wilk, & Chad Smith
Make of drumkit? Currently, and for the past 3 months, a crappy Sound Percussion. I just bought a Pearl Export set on CraigsList, so I need to install them. I haven't played them yet.
Make of cymbal? On my current set; all Zildjians. I actually have a 14" top hi-hat on top of a 13" bottom. On the set I just got, it came with a Zildjian Crash and Ride, with Sabian hats.
Where do you practice? In my room. Mostly when my sister isn't home.
Are you in a band/s? Not formally, but I mess around with two cover bands.
Covers or originals? Covers.
What style of music? Mostly Classic Rock.
Favorite take out food? Arby's or Wendy's.
Country? U.S.
One really odd fact about yourself? My IQ was found to be among the highest 15% found in the state for my age, yet I'm in the bottom 30% of my graduating class.
How did you start drumming? My three uncles have been playing since they could sit upright at the drum throne, (one of which is world renowned, playing with the Original Blues Brothers Band, Tower of Power, Stevie Wonder, Isaac Hayes, Stevie Cochran, (currently), the original Cosby Show band/orchestra, and countless other famous artists). About 6 months ago, my mom got married, and I wanted to surprise her by playing drums at her wedding. My uncles told me as much as the could over the phone, but I hadn't a set, no sticks, no nothing. So in about a month of talking on the phone, and 10 minutes on the morning of the wedding, I played a steady beat for two songs with no pause, no fills, no cymbals, no nothing. Since then, I've gotten myself a set, teaching myself everything I know just from listening.

05-11-2010, 04:54 PM
Hello. My name is Ted White with the Soundproofing Company. I'm not sure if I'm supposed to identify my company affiliation in my signature or not. I've sent a PM to admin for clarification.
If I can offer an opinion regarding construction options or techniques, I'll be happy to, but it's never good form to discuss individual products or brands, so I won't go there.
In looking at a few threads so farm it seems there are some very savvy people here with great advice. Maybe I can learn something.

Hi folks,
I love drumming, but basically I suck as a drummer. However I am a more or less accomplished musician and play many instruments but left music as a career at an early age after graduating from Berklee College of music and discovering work as a outdoor guide/climbing guide instructor/leader. Now I am a sound junkie and play many instruments. I am a didgeridoo maker by profession these days and have made a range of other musical instruments including drums. I live in the beautiful Colorado Rocky mountains at high elevation and winters are long and cold here. I am a drum, cymbal and gongaholic
I see many familiar people from other forums are here as well: cymbalholic, DFO Ghostnote, etc. Looks like a much wider range of tastes than the vintage crowd in general. Glad to find this place.

Well, to begin with I'll put it out there. I'm quite young. 14 to be exact. I've been drumming for going on 3 years now. My father was a drummer from the 50's to 90's whereupon he got cancer and is even now battling it. I gained his drum kit and in an effort to honor his legacy began learning drums by ear watching live concerts of the midnight special paying attention to the drummers and their setups. Now I've evolved into as my name presents all styles of music. I enjoy everything from Jazz and Blues, to Metal and Avant Garde. I feel that a musician who limits his styles is not truly a musician, he is merely a tool in a band. My musical influences range heavily from John Bonham and Terry Bozzio, to Chris Adler and The Rev, I enjoy watching each drummers individual styles and technicallity. Well, I think thats enough for now. I enjoy coming here to DrummerWorld and hope to stay for my life.

That's mine and if you'd please ignore the venue. xD I had them set up in my room for a quick sound check before I head to a friends house this weekend for some covers/orginals/improvs.

Thanx. I left a comment on your "Sonor" thread. Sweet kit. I see you're into Avant Garde. I'm a big John Zorn fan, myself. It was Will Calhoun and Jungle Funk (2000) that really pulled me into the "dark side". He was playing Sonor back then. And a first generation Korg Wave Drum. That led me to getting a Roland SPD-S, and a Electro-Harmonix loop station, to add to my "acoustic" kit. Which led to a vintage Tama TS305 6 channel analog/synthesizer e-drum kit. More e-drum pads and modules followed. Finally, the Mothership landed, in the form of a current generation Korg Wave Drum and a vintage RMI 368X Electra-Piano. That all lives on the "other side" of my jam room. Rock, Ambient, Jazz, Avant Garde, it's all good.

Hi Babis,
a huge welcome to the forum. I'm just listening to your stuff right now, it sounds superb! Just a tiny point, you've posted this in the wrong section. Go to "your place" where you can introduce yourself & post your playing. It's an easy mistake to make if you're new here and English isn't your first language. Anyhow, I'll keep listening (taking some time to load) & get back to you.

Just wanted to say hi, I just joined. I'm a record producer/singer/guitarist by profession and a devout air drummer...lol The long and short of it is I moved my studio earlier this year into a large facility and have a huge tracking room, well one day my buddy brought over and left his kit and we all started playing on it for fun. Since then I bought a Yamaha Oak Custom silver sparkle kit and have been practicing simple beats with a click. This week we also acquired a Bonham green sparkle Ludwig. So I got drums comin' out my butt. This week I bought a Tama drum metronome and started lessons with one of my session drummers on Friday. I am so excited, drums have always been a major thing in my life and I just love guys like Taylor Hawkins, Tommy Lee, Bonham, Copeland etc... So that's my story, I'm 46 and taking my first drum lesson.

how did you start drumming: I always wanted to learn an instrument. I tried piano and guitar, but to no avail. One day when I was 7 or 8, I decided I wanted a drum set. For my birthday I got a cheap First Act drum set. I joined the elementary school band where all you learn is how to hold the sticks properly, flams, 5 stroke rolls, and 9 stroke rolls. In 6th grade I started taking real, private lessons.

Hi, everyone. My name is Maurice. I feel a little strange posting on a site with drummers almost young enough to be my grandchildren. I'm 63 and I just found this board. I have found the techniquec, general discussion and gear threads very helpful. I just signed up so I can post. Well, here goes.
How long have I been playing?- aprox. 51 years, since I was in the sixth grade.
Why did I start playing?- I had a HS band director who wanted to start a jazz band. We didn't have a drum set so we got an old marching BD and put a foot pedal on it, used what cymbals we had in the band room and made tom toms out of marching snare drums. I thought it was ok because I didn't know any better. A fer years later my parents bought me my first kit, a Lyra, which I kept for many years.
What is the origin of my user name? - I play Zickos drums I've owned since 1975. They have a big deep sound but the hardware isn't so good. I've replaced some of it, particulary the tom mounts. Any one else out there have any exprience with them?
What make of cymbal do I use? - Mostly Zildjen, that I have collected over the years, but I have 1 Paiste given to me by a former college band director and a recently purchased Dream crash I really like.
Where do I practice? - In my home when I do which is, unfortunately, not often enough. Most of my practice is on the job.
Am I in a band? - I play with "Talk of the Town", a 17 pc big band from the Glenn Miller tradidtion, The musicians are all ages from 20's to 80's. One even played in the USO bands in WWII. I also play in various pit orchestras for musicals and I am the tympanist with a local community orchestra
What style of music do I play? - Jazz, Rock, Classical, whatever is needed
Country- USA - I am from Oklahoma.
I'm looking forward to sharing experiences with members of this board.

Hi guys. I"m new to this forum. I've been on other forums for a while. Some of you guys might know me as sonorguy, but that name was taken here. As my name describes, I build stave snare drums, and I play a German made Sonor force 3000 6 piece birch kit. I generally don't have too much to say, but I'll chime in when I have something substantial to say.
Nice to meet y'all, this place has a good feel to it!

how did you start drumming? I was in jazz band in middle school, and our drummer couldn't play Oye Como Va. On break, I went to the kit and played it spot on (with out any formal training). The band came back in and we started grooving. After that, it was drums ever since.
I just started a "drum channel" on youtube. I only have 2 videos up. One is a half-time shuffle funk go-go groove, I named the "Filipino Shuffle". And the other is a sticking I've been messing around with. Please check it out!

Hello,
I am James Richardson and have just signed upto the Drummerworld forum.
I live in the Southwest of England and have been playing drums since the age of 12, now 20. I am about to start my third and final year of studying toward my degree in Music at Plymouth University.
Absolutely love drums and developing all aspects of my playing. I play permanently in the bands ABSENCE, ICENI and EGNUM. I haveplayed in many other bands, function and covers bands and currently play in a variety of bands on a temporary basis too. I have played in samba percussion orchestras and have recently started to co run my own called 'Bloco Cadencia.'
I play a Mapex M Birch kit, with a mixture of Paiste Alpha series cymbals and Meinl Generation X series cymbals. I use Vater 5A sticks.

BrewBillfold
08-07-2010, 03:38 PM
Ah, I hadn't noticed this thread and I'm still relatively new to regularly posting here, so:
real name? Probably not Brew Billfold.
age? I was born in the 1960s. I don't like to think about it more exactly than that. Seriously--I'd have to think about it a minute to know exactly how old I am. I also frequently do not know what year it is, what month it is, what day of the week it is (not so unusual that one), etc. I do not like thinking about time in that way and made a conscientious effort to not do it. It worked. I'll probably try to forget the decade I was born in soon enough.
how long been playing? Since I was about 6 years old.
origin of user name? A pun--a modified spoonerism--on my favorite drummer's name.
top 5 drummers? Bill Bruford, John Bonham, Jack DeJohnette, Carl Palmer, Elvin Jones
make of drumkit? I don't like sticking to one brand, and I like using an assortment in one set-up, even. I'll basically use anything that makes a sound, as long as I like the sound. That includes budget stuff, kids' instruments and even things not usually considered musical instruments.
make of cymbal? Same as my "make of drumkit" answer.
where do you practice? On my own, when I'm at home, in an apartment, so it's on an electronic kit most of the time. I also have pads for acoustic drums so that I'll sometimes play on those instead. With others, wherever the rehearsal is being held. That could be anywhere, right? One of these days, maybe, my wife and I will finally buy a house . . . who knows. I haven't owned a house yet and I'm pretty far along. It would be nice to be able to practice--and record--an acoustic kit at home again, though.
are you in a band/s? Yes, too many, and I also do a lot of work-for-hire gigs, and some music completely on my own (as I also play keyboards, bass, a bit of guitar, etc.).
covers or originals? Well, what I prefer to do is originals and "original covers"--one of my own bands is dedicated to only doing covers, but doing them in a Residents/Zappa/Devo etc, way--so that it can be difficult to even recognize the tune we're doing. In a work-for-hire capacity, I often have to do jazz standards and some other covers. What I haven't done in a long time is play in a band where we're doing popular music covers where the band is trying to make them sound like the originals. I have no interest in that unless it's a situation where I'd be making a lot of money . . . so that my interest would only be the money. I just do not normally like the idea of doing covers "faithfully", although I do enjoy tribute bands where they're trying to get every last detail--including the look, instruments, etc. the same. I would consider being in one of those if it's for an artist I love, but I wouldn't want it to be the only thing I'm doing.
what style of music? Well, aside from the "original cover" band, which is a side project, the stuff I write on my own in my primary band tends to be Zappaish (too much so sometimes--i've had to try to NOT let that influence come through so much at times), or, as I've sometimes tried to keep in mind, "As if Stravinsky wrote funky, fusiony, heavy psychedelic carnival music". I have another side project that concentrates on "horror" music, which ranges from more ambient stuff to some "original covers" of music from horror media (films, TV shows, games, etc.) and some horror-related things (like Scooby-Doo, say). Those are my own bands, and none of them are very commercial (or commercially successful yet). Working for others, what I most like to play is progressive rock and fusion. I do a lot of more traditional jazz gigs. I can enjoy playing almost anything though--I was doing a reggae gig recently, I've done a fair amount of country, I've played hip-hop, funk, punk, metal, showtunes, classical . . . I'm open to anything really, as long as either (1) folks are trying to do something music-theoretically creative with the music in question or (2) it pays well or has a good chance of leading to things that will. I'm not at all against "selling out"--making a lot of money gives you a chance to do whatever you'd like to do, whether you'd make money or not, and I'd much rather make a lot of money playing music than in some white or blue collar 9-5 job. I'm just not well suited to the latter.
favourite take out food? Pizza. I could eat pizza for every meal every day. Of course, I'd look like Leslie West if I did that--and worse, have health problems--so I just save it for a periodic, heavenly treat.
country? I like country, yeah. Oh, you mean what country am I in. The U.S. NYC-area at the moment.
one really odd fact about yourself? I'm an extremely over-educated s---head. And maybe I have a weird sense of humor. Oh, and I'm also a very odd combination of a Libertarian and a socialist politically. I've yet to meet someone else with my political views (or many of my views in general), which makes it very unlikely that I'd ever see a government structured the way I'd structure it if I were king.
how did you start drumming? By moving my hands up and down. Seriously, though, when I was maybe 4 years old, I went to a relative's wedding (I don't even recall what relative--it would be interesting to ask my mom to see if she remembers). There was a band at the reception, and I was just fascinated by the drummer. For most of the reception I stood a few feet away from the drummer, staring at him. In retrospect, it's surprising that he didn't start "accidentally" dropping sticks my way. I probably creeped him out. He probably thought I was a Damien (well, or Bad Seed, as this was prior to the Omen) who was going to end up pushing him down a flight of stairs. Anyway, I was fascinated enough with drumming that I kept bugging my mom to let me take lessons. I only got a toy drumset at first, but after wearing through two of those (the heads were probably just duct tape after awhile), and still being just as interested, my mom finally gave in, figuring that her hearing wasn't so important after all.

Hi. I ended up here as a result of being a frequent visitor of the Drummerworld website. I noticed for the first time that one can join/post to various 'discussion boards' and decided to try it out. I'm technologically illiterate, to the point that I have to ask my wife to do everything for me online, even just to send email messages.
Anyway, by way of introduction, I'm SQUEAKY, a drummer in Chicago. I'm an age 40+ mucisian having been playing for over 20 years. I've performed with various local bands in the Chicago area over the years. I've given my time and loyalty to various bands, but ultimately have always run into roadblocks due to certain band members not doing their part to help the band become a success. The disappointment of seeing a potentially really great band end up falling by the wayside is very discouraging, but I've maintained my dedication as a musician, even though I've seen many others I knew years ago just give up totally.
The competition out there is fierce, and if you don't have the mental fortitude to stay with it, you'll never get anywhere. Being dedicated to a band is nice, but if the band you're with is an unknown group, or you have to contend with band members who constantly behave unprofessionally and do things that hold back the success of the band, these things cause you to feel totally unfulfilled as a musician. My wife has been trying to convince me over the years that I should have focused on strictly FREELANCING, that way I wouldn't have to contend with dealing with internal issues that can cause a band to fail. She'd tell me that if I were to just FREELANCE, I'd have a better chance of performing with those musicisians who operate in a strictly professional manner, like myself.
Well, hindsight can weigh heavy on your mind, but I'm determined to make it. People tell me I’m good, and I want to keep moving forward in the quest to achieving both name recognition and financial success in this business. I have the talent and drive to work with other pros out there, but need to figure the best way to network, so that I can get the attention of the right people.
I'm an excellent double bass percussionist, versatile in ANY style of music; and also do background vocals. Folks can see me on my webpage at myspace.com/squeakychicagodrummer.
My professionalism and dedication to my craft is evident in how I sound, and I'd like to network with other musicians who think the same way. If you can check out my webpage, I'd like here your feedback. Thanks for your time; I look forward to communicating with other pros out there :)

My drum instructor took lessons from Billy Flanagan (former Tommy Dorsey big band drummer) whom Steve Smith (Vital Information/Journey) took lessons from as well.
How did you start drumming
9th birthday my mom told me I could take lessons in any instrument or karate lessons. I didn't want to be seen walking down the street in a "bathrobe" (my 9 y/o mind at work) so I started drum lessons.

I grabbed some plastic ice cream pails and put different amounts of shirts in each one for tone. Went to the local walmart and got a wood dowel to cut for sticks. The rest is history.

How did you start drumming - Since I was very young always tapped my hands to the drums in 60's and 70's rock music that I grew up listening to (even though I was born in '90). Some of my good friends played guitar and bass, one day I decided to try out the drum set at his house. They thought I should definitely pursue it and he gave me a free old crappy CB drumset, and so it began :).

So I'm actually pretty new to drumming. I am now a freshman at the University of Arkansas and played marching snare at a really cruddy high school, but only just recently got interested in drums.
When I was in 8th grade, my parents bought me a Ludwig drumset, but due to neighborhood restrictions and lack of interest, I never really invested serious time in it. This February, I figured I'd really start learning how to play. With money I had saved up, I decided to buy a Roland TD-9 with the rubber tom pads. So far a great, QUIET, investment that was well worth the money. It's greatly helped me in the basic learning stages.
Being fairly limited with money after buying the Roland, I invested in this (http://buybestonsales.com/images/Vex-Pro-Touring-Double-Bass-Drum-Pedal.jpg) cheap (and what I believe "great for beginners") double bass drum pedal. I guess it's been suffice, but I'm really looking for some serious upgrades here soon. :)
Anyways, I just wanted to introduce myself and got carried away!

John Thompson
43 years old
Built my own drum set using 7 Eames shells in 1986. Plus timbales and octobans
Peart replica for the most part. I was a Peart disciple.
They're gone now.
Gotten interested in other aspects. Bass guitar and computer music.
Current interest is recording live drum MIDI data into digital audio studio workstation to capture the groove properly.
Using SImmons SD7K and Battery 3. May try Addictive drums.
My son is a drummer, guitarist, and beginning keybardist. He had a good collection of A Zildjians. At some point we'll replace his practice quality kit with something semi pro. 5 lug tom toms don't cut it.

One really odd fact about yourself?
When I was born, one of the ribs over my heart split, twisted and fused itself together, so I have a block of solid bone over my heart!
How did you start drumming?
My Granddad died when I was aged 8 and left me a drum pad set in his will, so I started to pick up the basics of how to create a beat from that, but never really took it further.
Fast forward 8 years and a few friends thought it'd be cool to form a band and do a couple of covers, so I volunteered to step in on drums, although I'd never been behind a kit in my life. every so often we'd go to our college's practice room and have a jam, and try to play Nirvana's "Smells Like Teen Spirit". I managed to teach myself what to do and found myself wanting more! My first kit was bought for me by my family for my 19th birthday and since then I've been playing it off and on again until a year ago I formed a covers band with a friend.

How did you start drumming?
I was a guitarist with a brother who had a drum set. I'd mess around on it every once in a while, but then the guitarist of my band quit. We had a gig coming up in about 3 months, so instead of cancelling the show I decided to become the drummer. I was having a ton of fun playing Punk beats and whatnot, but it wasn't until I saw Jojo Mayer do a clinic when I realized I wanted to be a drummer. His drumming was absolutely mind-bending to me (still is), and ever sense seeing him play my life has been all drumming all the time!

one really odd fact about yourself?
Well, my day job is as a qualified locksmith, been in the trade for almost 6 years. As a result, I have quite an interest in physical security, safes, lock mechanisms and collect specialty locks and tools. My interest sometimes crosses into electronic security, i love listening to talks from security conferences, which have people from both industries.
how did you start drumming? They had a 'musician in training' thing when I was in like... grade 9 and i figured since i was driving my teachers insane from tapping so much, i might as well learn how to tap in time. :P And the rest as they say is history.

Hello everyone, I'm a 39 year old ex rock/punk/experimental drummer with a desire to finally get back into my old hobby and I've decided to finally get new gear and get my chops in order. I'll try and not bother you all too much with newbie questions and do my reading before I post. I'm not genre specific anymore and could be just as happy playing Foo Fighters, Led Zep or some old country basics.
I've just gotten a new Yamaha stage custom birch 5 piece kit, and I'm waiting on cymbals. I've always had trash drums and I'm excited to finally get some decent gear and learn to play it properly.
I've been drumming since I was 9 years old, and always prided myself on the fact that I was a 'natural' from the get go, and could play along with most anything outside of hardcore double bass speed metal. I can play as loud or quiet as need be, I never trashed heads and broke sticks and could keep a solid tempo forever.
What I always lacked is pure technical prowess and knowledge of certain basics as I never took a lesson, and I feel it's held me back. Now that I'm all grown up I want to address these problems and become a truly better drummer, since I live in a remote rural area, I'll mainly be reliant on online lessons, and you good people here to steer me straight.
Thanks!!

What's up everyone? I'm Matt. I'm 26, and have been playing for about 10 years. I played pretty seriously for my first few years and then joined the military and didn't play much. I have rekindled my passion now though and I'm loving it again. I recently bought a new kit and cymbals. I got a DW Collectors Series kit in Broken Glass Finish with 10, 12 and 14" toms, 22x18 kick, and 5/14 snare. I'm playing on all Zildjian A Custom cymbals now. I have 14" hats, 16" fast crash, 18" crash, and 20" ride. It all sounds amazing together although the 16" crash still needs a little breaking in.
I play a lot of different styles. My earlier drumming focused on jazz and rock, but I've branched out a lot. I play at NewLife church in Slverdale Washington. I love playing there because all the musicians are top notch and it provides me a great chance to sharpen my skills.
I'm here I guess just to meet other drummers and hopefully have a place to ask questions when needed. Thanks for listening!

just started drumming at 47.....real late start, been playing guitar about 38 years, back in october I traded a guitar for a simmons electronic drum, not knowing if i would even try it...I did, and was hooked, now looking at acustic kits...dream set would be a yamaha hipgig, but will probably get a gretsch club, with the 18" BD. no particular favorite drummer...but I watch hours of drumming on youtube. I live in Ventura California, my landlord is a working musician, so this house always has something going on, and pretty well known musicians stop by sometimes...looking forward to reading and posting in here...I got a million questions. thanks

I was originally a guitarist for about 6 years
then one day I played my friends electronic kit and I fell in love with it
I only played for about an hour doing basic beats, it was my first time playing but in that hour I had more fun on that kit then my whole 6 years on guitar.
So I bought myself a drum kit and basically all I did for months was play drums all day.

Wow! What did you find was the best rhythm to keep for the longest period of time?
That's a good question.
What happened was >> My body fell into a steady rhythm - not too slow or too fast. Too slow slow or too fast would make me tired.
I remember getting off the set to use the mens room (this was after days of playing) and the beat that I was playing was in my steps as I was walking - I felt like I was in a cartoon (I was really wiped out the first week, after that it was much easier).
There were bands playing at the other side of the night club every night so I had to keep quiet and slow when they played.

how did you start drumming?
I've always been drawn to drumming. I remember getting those old clear plastic margarine tubs and whacking the crap out of them. When I was around 14 we had a second music teacher start at our secondary school who was into rock and pop music. One day he had the drum kit set up, and I just sat down and could immediately play a straight rock groove and even do a basic fill. He let me borrow the kit over the summer holidays which was great fun - I remember jamming with some friends in my bedroom. After that I brought a cheap red Hohner kit - I remember denting the skins a lot, no idea how I managed that now I look back. I also managed to break the foot pedal in half; it was only a cheap thing! It went from there really. I just wish I'd studied it properly in the early days like I'm just starting to now. I've spent years just "ticking over" every couple of weeks in a covers band, and other not very demanding bands - but now I've joined a more rock/metal oriented band where I need speed and power, I find I'm seriously having to work at sorting myself out, and I've gone back to the pad and started working on rudiments again from scratch. I'd love to make a career out of drumming, hopefully it's not too late.

How did you start drumming? I tapped on the toolbox I made in woodworking class, finding all the different tones I could get out of the wood. I watched a police marching band and was riveted by the sound and rhythm. Brrrat, Brrat tat Bratatatat...man I wanted be one of those guys! Tapped on every surface of the house driving my family nuts. Bought a crappy kit from a guy who wrapped his drums with linoleum kitchen flooring. Made a lot of noise without the discipline to learn how to play. Picked up bongos and congas later and got a better sense of rhythm and time. When I got back on a kit I picked it up much more easily. Now I'm obsessed with all drums and percussion, with tone and timbre and groove.

Name; Isaac Astley.
im 18 years young.

i practice at home, downstairs just outside the sound room.
im not in a band but id rather be a fill in drummer (or session)
style metal my favorite is fusion because it can be challenging.
i eat sushi if i can, um not much of a take away fan, i do eat abit of junk every now and then, im trying to keep healthy lol.
im in Australia, in a small town about 1 and a half hours away from sydney.
odd fact: well i cant use someone elses drumsticks i rather my own i think its because im abit of a clean hand freak, and a cant go anywhere without a bottle of water lol.
how did i start drumming: well it all started when i was living in sydney i had just finished kindy and was nearly ready for year 1, my uncle had a wedding and a live band playing too, i saw a drummer there and i was enthralled by the bass drum, how when you hit it the skin mooved, and so i saw a little kid on a toy drumkit just off the stage having a bash, i asked for a go and bashed it myself, lucky enough for me my dad told me he knows how to play drums, so he grabbed me hands and mooved them for me like i was playing a basic rock beat, i was impressed and bugged my parents to get me a drumkit, my dad thought ok if you learn how to do a drumroll you can get one, he showed me what to do, so i spent all my time practicing on anything bouncy, i mastered it 5 months into my new year at school and got my first drumkit at the age of 7 2 weeks before my birthday i was very impressed and played it all night, my dad tought me a basic rock beat surely the next morning i had mastered that, my dad showed me all of the things i needed to start from and i thank him for he's support and stuff, but eventually i tought myself new things and so did my boss, he is a session drummer and he has taken me under hes wing to learn new things, so i hope i can go somewhere with this :)
also i have passed all my AMEB (Australian board of music) certs each of which passed in 1 year.

Well, instead of posting all these other stickies,I'll post my introduction here.
I am a 31 year old drummer/percussionist/saxophonist. I began playing drums, AFTER, i couldn't make any noise out of any mouthpiece at band tryouts, when I was ten. I wanted to play sax, to be like "duke ellington"(little did I know that he wasn't the sax player), trumpet, so I could be like Miles Davis(i knew who he was), or trombone because it seemed fun.
No sound. "Here try this..." (four sixteenths), "ok, now try this" (eight eighth notes), " now try this" ( one set of triplet eight notes and quarter)...."You could be a good drummer"
I grew up in the South side of chicago. EVERY sunday from 5 am to I think ten, was "breakfast with the beatles." Also, my father showed me, and pointed out , the amazing drum parts on" fire," "purple haze," and "manic depression." We also both really understood, him more than I at the time , why "white room," was one of the coolest songs ever.
I started my life as a drummer listening to Led Zepplin 4, Are you Experienced, Appetite for Destruction, Jimi Hendrix live at woodstock, and shortly thereafter every Metallica release, up until the "black album."
I mastered all lars parts by 14. "Load" hadn't come out yet, but by then...well it was Emperor, Satyricon, Cannibal Corpse, things of the death/black metal nature.
I was in concert band, marching band, and because I was too rock and roll, so to speak, wasn't in jazz band.
I can play all the usual concert instruments proficently: timpani, suspended cymbal, temple blocks, gong, chimes...etc.
If I would say drummers that really changed my whole idea of what could be done, in no particular order it would have to be: John Bonham, Mitch Mitchell, Buddy Miles, the guy from double trouble (srv), Lars, Gene Hoglan, Danney Carey (tool), Dale Crover (melvins), buddy rich, gene kruppa, tony williams, vinni caulutia(maybe i spelled that wrong), chester thompson(with Zappa), dave grohl, Frost, Elvin Jones, Art Blakey, ringo (or paul mccartney, whoever you believe) and Matt cameron.
Any one that can support the music, play a groove that makes me want to play RIGHT then, and basically anyone hitting a drum. I feel that we can all learn from each other and technicality or chops is all good and well, but Dave grohl doesn't have chops like buddy, but the emotion gets across. I am not a fan of Kiss.
Drumming is the first instrument known to man besides voice, Egyptians played drums made out of skulls, Vikings did as well.
Without us, where would the rest of the band be? We are what people clap along to, not tight leather pants on Axl.
I , as of yesterday, auditioned for a local pipe and rum band playing traditional scottish and Irish music, also I compose music that has me playing drums and sax in same songs plus sometimes making harsh realities with analog synthesizers.
Best bands I have seen: NIN, Tool, Maynard Fergusons band, and Melvins.
I am sometimes long winded and wish you all would give me money for a "hang," even though they say it's not a drum.
I plan to try and learn tabla one day, have one child (one on the way), and plan to go back to school to be a music teacher.
I have worked as a kennel assitant, Ups loader, semi driver, restaurant worker, florist assistant, hvac helper(only a sometimes extra money gig), a furniture delivery person, wrapped cds in a recording studio, and currently I talk on the phone all day to people about their problems with a MAJOR window and door manufactorer.
I enjoy reading fine books, cooking, and teaching my son to do various things, like hitting cymbals correctly.
You might catch me reading poe, pahalaniuk, ayn rand, Jung, George Montalba (or listening to his organ playing!), or maybe a book about Forensic science.
So I guess that sums me up in short.
Lately, I have been listening mostly to Joshua Redman, Larry Young, 9 equilibrium, and to wake me up Minor threat.
Currently its gretsch, DW, Vater, Paiste, one zildgjian(I do spell that wrong, unl;ike on craigslist), evans and various hardware.
The Elvin groove at the begining of the first track of larry youngs unity is ever elusive, but its elvin, what are you going to do?
Happy to meet you all, I hope we can converse and put an end to the blasphemy that music is considered most of the drival that is churned out by the media conglomerates to use as tools of indoctrination. In other words, I happened to skip by Mtv this morning (they still play videos?) and some terrible singer named "kendra" or something...seriously put on Goldie if you need electronic music...
Or and dont knock Portishead drummer, Clive Deamer, and there is a reason Clyde Stubblefield and Bernard Purdie are the most sampled in hip hop.
This is officialy the end of my introduction

I had stopped playing a few years ago in disgust of the music business, but the flame was inevitably rekindled. The inner fire for drumming never dies!

Hey guys, I'm relatively new to drumming(2 years isn't very much, and only taking lessons for less than half that isn't helping). Anyway, I know almost no terms(keyholing... Still don't know other than it's bad for cymbals). I like to use parenthesis. Other than that, there's my bio and I look forward to learning more about drums along with meeting new people on the forum.
Real name? Cameron Tubman
Age? 15
How long been playing? In my second year.
Origin of user name? A bit of a play on words.
Top 5 drummers? I'll say Neil Peart(Canada ftw). I like the way Michael Thomas uses the double bass. I really only got into rock/metal music in the summer as I took drumming a lot more seriously. I know the names, just not the people. Eventually I'll figure out everyone, but people will have to educate me on them.
Make of drumkit? Westbury starter kit. 5 piece. Pretty basic, but I love it.
Make of cymbal? Sabian
Where do you practice? Basement.
Are you in a band/s? School jazz band and a bunch of friends that play together from time to time.
Covers or originals? Covers.
What style of music? Jazz and some rock.
Favourite take out food? Pizza.
Country? Canada.
One really odd fact about yourself? If someone touches my drum sticks... I had a friend borrow them once to play ONE song, and he ended up tearing them to pieces.
How did you start drumming? I homeschooled until high school and played piano for 12 or so years. Because I couldn't play piano in my music class, I got put on percussion and excelled at it. My musical background likely played a part in my success. Last summer I really got into drumming because the grade 12 that is very talented graduated, so I knew I'd be taking over for what he did(Which was jazz band). That's where I am now.

top 5 drummers (applied to my personal tastes): Dale Crover, D. Grohl, B. Bruford, J. Bonham, Zach Hill... and OF COURSE i appreciated the drummers outside of my realm who are amazing like Dave Weckl, Vinnie Colaiuta, Steve Gadd etc....
make of drumkit: I play on my lead singer's kit which has been on a couple long tours... it's a Mapex Orion Birch. Personally I love FrankenDrums, from my kids' Adam Percussion 5 piece small set (modified to accomodate me) with nice heads to a First Act kit I just got for $10 that's going to get a royal treatment just so it can serve as a backup to the band's kit.
make of cymbal: A few makes... Zildjian Avedis A Custom, Zildjian Avedis and PowerBeat 14" hi hat, Sabian B8 Pro 10" china splash & 13" thin crash, Zildjian Avedis A Custom 18" thin crash, Dream Contact 17" crash, an old Zildjian Avedis ride that might be a marching band piece; about 21.5", and a Wuhan 10" china
where do you practice: I play a few times a week for a few hours at a time at my lead singer/guitarist's house... I used to be able to practice at home, but the apartment I moved into a year ago isn't conducive to at-home drumming... I practice in my head ALL DAY every day though... and I can play with my teeth/mouth (not audible from the outside) which helps me sound out concepts I think of if I don't have any percussion access.
are you in a band/s: Yes!
covers or originals: Originals
what style of music: Very hard rock with timing changes, some jazzy elements, a lot of driving rhythms...
favourite take out food: the oriental and multi-culture hot food bar at my local Wegmans
country: United States
one really odd fact about yourself: I won my age class in two fairly heavily-populated 5k races despite being a pack-a-day smoker.
how did you start drumming? Zeppelin made me realize the sonic quality of good drumming, the Dust Brothers' production of Ton Loc's Loc'ed After Dark album furthered the idea of "groove" and got me sitting behind a kit, Twisted Sister's Stay Hungry made me realize what driving rhythms could do, a drummer schoolmate @ age 12 showed me how to play drums at my desk with a pencil, a hand and a foot, and Nirvana's Nevermind set me on the path I follow to this day.

Hows it going everyone. I started drumming this past summer and been lurking the site for a few months. I decided to finally sign up.
My set is poor minus the cymbals from what i have read and i am actually looking to upgrade and would love some guidance. Currently i own the following: CB Drums wine red 5pc - stock heads - Zildjian hats/c.ride/crash - Pearl double kick pedals which are beaten up.
I am a student and on a $450 budget and am looking for some opinions.
I have considered getting pdp shells with some remo heads and a new kick pedal. I want to know if there is much of a difference between a dw 2000 and dw 3000? I want to make it my main pedal and stick without it for a few years and use money on sticks, cymbalS and stands.

The 2000 is a lower-cost, single-chain, lower-performance pedal. The 3000 is what used to be called the 7000, a good, solid, well-reviewed intermediate/jobber pedal with a double chain and more adjustment points than any pedal at its price point. It's essentially where pro quality was about 5-10 years ago. I own one, and I played on a 7000 for years prior to it. If you can scratch up the few extra bucks but can't quite afford a 5000, the 3000 should be a good pedal.

The Mapex Voyager looks OK.
Its a beginner kit but it looks pretty stout for a beginner.
I think it has basswood shells which is the standard beginner material.
If its new, the cymbals suck but Its still worth $500.
At the very least, you will have to eventually replace the cymbals.
I'm sure there are some better deals for a complete used kit.
Keep looking and see what you find.

Hello there!
I have been a drummer for over 40 years - perhaps most notably (or not) in Sid Sideboard and the Chairs many years ago. I have recently collected over 70 first hand stories from
well known drummers like Nick Mason, Topper Headon, Simon Phillips, Don Powell, Woody (Madness) and many more. I've put them in a book which was published last year and is doing well. However, I hesitate to mention its name here as it could be seen as advertising which is not encouraged on these sites. It does seem competely appropriate in other ways though. Any ideas?
Hey, my name's Mr.L, real name is Tom. I'm a 13-year old Drummer from Canada who started last March. Anywho that's enough about my boring life, here's my setup:
Yamaha Stage Custom Advantage 100% Birch Drums
10x7 Rack Tom
12x8 Rack Tom
14x14 Floor Tom
20x17 Bass Drum
Plus a Ludwig Black Magic Stainless Steel 6.5x14 Snare
All drums have Remo Coated Emps on the batter side, and Coated Ambs on the Resonant Side.
Sabian B8 20" Ride
Sabian B8 18" Crash/Ride
Sabian B8 10" Splash
PowerBeat(?) 14" Hats
So yeah, that's about it. Now, one last thing. Who are the Moderators on here?
Oh yes, one thing about me... I hate muffling pretty much EVERYTHING. Except I do put a strip of Duct Tape on my Bass Drum, but just to make it a wee bit more punchy.

Hi, everyone! I registered almost exactly 2 days ago now (it'll be exactly 2 days in about 4 hours hehe), and I am very pleased and very happy to be a part of this community. Actually, I'm almost emotional because DrummerWorld has a very special place in my heart because of it being what it is. So, I'm actually a little bit nervous. :)
Anyway, without further adieu, here are my answers!
real name?
Tim Hueller
age?
31 (April 26th, 1979)
how long been playing?
Somewhere between 16-18 years. Unfortunately, I don't remember exactly when I started. I kinda just started without knowing that I was going to continue! But based on several memories I have, I know that I did not start any earlier than 1993, and I know that I did not start any later than 1994. So whenever I try to answer this question, I tend to calculate it by saying that I probably started either in the middle of 1993, or in the early part of 1994.
origin of user name?
I am a member of a message board called Overclock.net. When I was trying to create a user name, I looked around the room for inspiration and my eyes eventually fell upon these 2 cables that are sticking out of the little cable management hole on my desk (the very same cables in my avatar, actually). At that point, I actually said out loud, "Two cables? Hey, that's not bad!" So, I chuckled a little bit about my silly idea and the rest is history. :)
Just in case you're curious about why I have these cables: A few years ago, I had a practice space where I had 24/7 access, and so I would go up and record myself using my computer just for fun! I mean, one day I bought a little analog unpowered mixer (a Peavey PV8) along with M-AUDIO's Pulsar II Matched Pair kit and started recording random stuff right at my computer just for fun and as well as for the sake of getting used to it prior to doing any actual recording at the practice space. Plus, these mics were my first condensers, so I got a big kick out of just listening to the way they record. But I quickly found it to be inconvenient to set this up each time I wanted to play around with it (meaning, at home) because I always had a cable dangling in the way that was connected between the mixer's Tape Out and the Line-In on my sound card. So I bought the Rocketfish cables you see in my avatar and "installed" them into my desk. hehe That way, all I had to do was put my mixer on the desk, pull the cables out a little bit, plug them in, and then I was set to play around with recording random stuff. :)
But of course, the setup at the practice space made it much easier because it didn't matter where the cables were dangling!
top 5 drummers?
This seems to change for me every day, sometimes multiple times per day. But this is mainly because I'm currently watching drum videos here on DrummerWorld nearly every single day. So, it feels impossible for me to answer!
However, my #1 favorite drummer of all time is Dave Weckl (regarding the "new" Dave Weckl, after he went through his "evolution"). I just like everything about him from the way he plays to the sound of his drums and cymbals (especially his Evolution series). But I also admire him for doing his own sound which, of course, results in a very consistent sound from gig to gig, and from recording to recording.
I first got into Dave during the days of Back to Basics and The Next Step, only it was more of a casual interest. But then one day I was at the store and saw his A Natural Evolution DVD series (but I understand it was first released on VHS). So I eventually became very enthusiastic about all three videos which basically fueled a brand new (and much stronger) interest in Dave! Not long after that, I decided to buy the live Dave Weckl Band recording "LIVE (and very plugged in)". Then about a year after that, I decided to just go ahead and buy all of the Dave Weckl Band albums! I don't have very many CDs of anything really, but I love this genre quite a bit.
But other than Dave, my current favorite drummers are basically all of the guys who seem to have the greatest precision and who seem to have the greatest ease of playing (who seem to be able to play absolutely anything they want with the greatest of ease). Although, that's not to say that I feel Dave doesn't fit this description. I guess a couple of examples can be like Benny Greb, Jost Nickel, or Gergo Borlai. Or even Johnny Rabb. However, I could probably name just about every drummer who's on the Drummers (http://www.drummerworld.com/drummerchoice.html) page. I mean, I absolutely love them all for different reasons! Although, the metal drummers are probably my least favorites because most of them seem to play at just one dynamic level.
So anyway, I guess that's my answer. I apologize for its length!
make of drumkit?
Yamaha Stage Custom (it was made in 1997)
make of cymbal?
Zildjian and one Paiste (but I'm hoping to replace all of them with Sabian some day)
where do you practice?
At home on my practice pad. :)
are you in a band/s?
Yep! I'm currently in an amateur band called The Roadhouse Blue Band (or "Roadhouse Blue" for short). We've only been together for about 9 months since about April, but we have already played close to a dozen paying jobs! There are 4 of us, and it seems that we usually charge about $400 to $500 for a job. We figure that this is a fair price because we're not at a professional playing level, and we also don't have a great sound system (we don't even have a sub woofer).
The founder of the band actually has his own business, and so we practice in a room at his place of business any time after 6pm (after hours) at least once during the week (usually on either Tuesday, Wednesday, or Thursday). This is the first time I've ever been without 24/7 access to my drums, so I'm still getting used to it (so that's why I practice at home on my pad). However, we don't have to pay any rent!
covers or originals?
Both, actually. But, we are basically a cover band who has a few originals.
what style of music?
It's basically a variety of danceable material. Some of it includes classic rock, country, and even blues (both somewhat old blues and somewhat new) - including the few originals we have! I love every second of it! But I think I would prefer something that's geared a little bit more towards improvisation. Although, I feel that I'm not ready for that higher level of playing yet.
favourite take out food?
McDonald's! I'm not fat yet nor am I showing any signs of possibly becoming fat, so I still love it - but I am trying to cut back because I'm not getting any younger! But when I get McDonald's, I always get 2-3 hamburgers and 1 order of three Chicken Selects. I also always get three difference sauces for the chicken: barbecue, sweet & sour, and that Deli Honey Mustard. I really am lovin' it!
But I also love White Castle just as much! When I go there, I always get 6-8 "White Castles", and then I put just a little bit of ketchup and mustard on them. I always go at roughly the same time of day too: between 12:30 and 1:45am on the weeknights, and between 2:00 am and 2:45 am on Friday and Saturday nights. It's drive-through only at that time of night, and so I prefer to go at a time when I know I won't be the only customer in line at the drive-through. I mean, I prefer to blend in instead of sticking out. So I always go when I know they're busy with the bar crowd.
country?
United States of America
one really odd fact about yourself?
Every single day, I spend like 5-10 minutes pulling on all of my eyelashes in hopes of pulling all the "dead" ones out in order to minimize the chances of getting one stuck in my eye. It works too! I also wear glasses, so I pull my glasses away from my face a little bit each time I pull. lol And when I pull, I always check between my fingers to see if I have pulled any out so that I can keep a mental day-to-day record of when the last time I pulled a few out. I mean there are days where I can't pull any out which usually means that I have to wait another day or two.
But again, this really works. I mean, it seems extremely rare for me to get an eyelash stuck in my eye these days.
how did you start drumming?
I have two siblings who are both older brothers (they're 33 and 36 years old). My oldest brother is Brian, and he has always been interested in being a drummer (he would often air drum to his music). One day back in like 1992 or 1993 (or was it 1994? lol) he came home with an old Slingerland jazz kit which he bought from a friend. I am guessing that these drums were made in the 70's because it had no bottom heads, no lugs for bottom heads, and no holes for lugs either. It also looked about that old. Minus the snare, it was a 4-piece: 10", 12", 16", and an 18" bass drum. It also came with a 20" Paiste 2002 Rock Ride, a 16" 2002 Rock Crash, and 14" 2002 Rock Hats. Of course, there was a stand for each.
To expand a little further on this set, it also came with an old 14" x 5" Ludwig Supraphonic. Except it was in terrible condition. :/ But of course, it still had a good sound! Unfortunately, it was in such bad shape that it's not really playable anymore.
Anyway, as soon as Brian brought these drums into the house, I found that it was impossible for me to stay away from them! Naturally, he protested quite a bit at first just because they were his drums; he tried things like hiding the sticks, taking the sticks with him to work and school, and even getting a little angry with me. But my parents basically told him to let me play them because it was obvious that it was impossible to keep me away from those drums!
I'm right-handed. At first, I didn't know how to play riding patterns (like constant 8th notes) with my right hand at the same time while playing a simple groove between my left hand and right foot. So, I literally played with just one stick at first. But then one day I decided to watch Brian play so that I could study the way he plays (he was relatively advanced). Then the next time I was home alone, I tried to copy his motions in regards to the way he played the hi-hat or the ride while keeping a basic rock groove between his left hand and right foot. I eventually got to the point where I could finally do it, and so that's when I realized that I am a drummer!
I'm self-taught, except I did take some basic lessons for a few months about 2-3 years after I started playing. The teacher's name was Bill (I can't remember his last name, but he was an employee at Torp's Music Center here in St. Paul). There were two main things I learned from him: one was how to count time while simultaneously playing the drums (which was a tremendous help as well as a tremendous coordination challenge), and the other was that when I attempted to play the bass drum on the last 16th note before a snare hit, I had a tendency to delay the bass drum a little bit thereby making it sound like I was playing a 16th-note triplet feel for that brief moment even though that wasn't my intention. So he recognized it and corrected me! Thanks to Bill, I am still mindful of that 16th-note thing to this day! It seems like I remember his correction every time I play such a groove! I love it, and so I am forever grateful to him for it. Of course, I am also forever grateful to him for teaching me how to count time while simultaneously playing the drums. That alone made everything easier. Not only that, but he also showed me the importance of keeping my sub-divisions even so that it was easier to avoid speeding up or slowing down during a fill, or when changing the groove.
The only other lessons I took (and take) were (and still are) obtained by watching other drummers do their thing every single chance I got (and get). This especially includes everything I learned from Dave Weckl's "A Natural Evolution" video series as well as Steve Smith's Drumset Technique /History of the U.S. Beat video, along with Jojo Mayer's Secret Weapons for the Modern Drummer video. But, I only really paid attention to the hand techniques. Oh yeah, and I also attended a drum clinic put on by Dave Weckl here in St. Paul at Ellis Drum Shop! I think that was back in 2007! :)
So anyway, that's my introduction. hehe I wanted to make it much shorter than this, but it always ended up being about this long no matter how hard I tried.

My kit is a Drumworld UK Stage Master Jazz Edition. with all the original hardware and the cymbals are their Extreme Iron set.
I listen to all sorts of music and like drumming to rock, blues and some jazz.
My favourite drummer is and always has been has to be Swansea's own Terry Williams.
Apart from some stuff with local schools, I mainly play for enjoyment.
