Once was known as Wild Bill, now it's more like mild Bill.
53 Y/O trying to hang on just a little while longer.
Quit drumming 18 years ago when my daughter was born.
Tried to get a kit like the old one, a Pearl MLX with Sabian cym. and Sonor snare.
WOW !! prices have really gone thru the roof !! Had to settle for a Gretsch Catalina Maple.
Just assembling the kit wore me out, now that's what I call old !!
Starting from scratch, it sucks but I am going to hang in there.
Got out the metronome and been putting in a couple hr. per day on drums and the pad. Don't want to p/o the neighbors too much.
Must be midlife crisis, back riding a Harley and beating on the drums, guess that I could be doing a lot worse things.

So I wanted to play violin, so we were all getting assigned our violins and it turned out they didn't have any that I could reach all the way out on. So depressed, I decided to play drums. The rest is history.

I'm Mitch, 16, from Torquay in Devon in the south of England

I've played drums since I was very little. I was 3 when my dad bought me a toy kit, which I smashed to pieces. I got my starter kit at 6, and have just recently bought a PDP X7 as my now full-time pro kit.

My dad bought me an 8" AAX splash for my 8th Christmas, and all my cymbals thereafter have been Sabian made. I have no personal preferences between different cymbal companies, Sabian was just the first thing I played and I've had no need to change. They get me a great sound, and that's all I care about.

I am looking to buy 4 more cymbals to complete my set-up. By my 17th birthday next March, I'm hoping my kit will look a little like the one in the set-up builder.

My Gear

Drums and Percussion
-PDP X7
-Bass : 18x22”
-Toms : 8x10", 9x12" 12x14" and 14x16"
-Snare (Premier) : 6x14"
-LP Rock Cowbell

Cymbals(Left to Right)
-14" HH Regular Hats
-16" AA Rock Crash
-10" HHX Splash
-18" AAX Stage Crash
-21" HH Raw Bell Dry Ride
-18" AAX Dark Crash
-18" HHX Chinese

Hardware -DW 4000 single pedal (hoping to upgrade to 5000 or 7000 double when I have the money)

Influences

Drummers
-Buddy Rich
-Tommy Aldridge
-Tommy Lee
-Dennis Chambers
-Dave Weckl
-Vinnie Paul Abbott

Bands
-80's Motley Crue
-Guns 'n' Roses
-Pantera
-Aerosmith
-Led Zep
-Van Halen
-80's/early 90's Metallica,

Thanks for taking the time to read my profile, happy to talk about drums n bands anytime... Mitch

Hi all,

I'm Jules, 36 yrs old from the land downunder. I've been around drums, muso's and musical instruments virtually my whole life, due to having a father who was an active drummer throughout the 60's, 70's and 80's. Although there was always a drum to tinker around on, i started seriously getting involved in the instrument at around 15 or 16 and from 18/19 worked pretty regularly up until about 5 or 6 years ago. Marriage, family etc put me on a hiatus until recently when the fires started to burn again. I've missed muso's and muso talk and it's high time I re-immersed myself. Although not currently playing in a band situation I hope to rectify this soon and get back to doing what I love. I've been lurking this site (and several others) for about a month or so now and decided it was time to take the plunge and register (finally!!!). I have been so impressed with this site specifically as opposed to most of the others I've visited. The amount of knowledge, valuable information, tips etc etc I've been exposed to since starting to view it has been staggering. I look forward to continuing to expose myself to the fountain of knowledge that is so easily accessible here and perhaps being able to contribute and share some of my own from time to time. I just wanted to congratulate you all on making this a stand out site that I felt I wanted to join and be a part of.

Cheers.

Hi everyone,

Just want to join the group and contribute what I can. I started playing guitar when I was a teen. Later I learned to play bass. Then I learned keyboards and now I am learning drums.

It seems the drummers get all the chicks so I am looking forward to getting good.

Hello!

I'm Kieran.
I'm originally a guitarist of about 9 years, but the last 2 years or so
I've been getting a grip on drums. I got my first kit in march. Sonor
Force 1007. It may not be much, but I love it all the same:)

I have pretty specific music tastes, although they span a few genres.
To name a few, Meshuggah, ISIS, Biffy Clyro, Foals and Zappa.
More besides!

My favourite drummers;
Tomas Haake
Jojo Mayer
Mike Mangini
Virgil Donati
Elliot hoffman

It's good to be a part fo the drummerworld family.

Hey everybody, I'm new here so I figured I'd give you all some information about myself.

My real name is Tom, I am 35 years old (well, close enough at least), and have been a drummer for about 1 month now (guitars for 20 years now). My user name is actually an old character name from an old RPG I used to play in high school. I believe it is just a weapon name spelled backwards, but I have yet to find anything about Katyn's in medival weaponry.

Back to music..

I am a metal head by nature, but hold an appreciation for all music, except rap. Classic Rock and Blues are my two favs outside the world of mehtul.

My current drum kit consists of a practice pad, and about 4 old college textbooks setup on a makeshift table for me to practice on until I get my first kit. My old 1500+ page Physical Chemistry book doubles as a floor tom. So I guess that would make my current kit manufacturer Scholar's Press.. They also make my cymbals. Before the end of the year I plan on getting either a Pearl Vision VBX or Yamaha Stage Custom kit, and a pack of Sabian B8 cymbals to get me going.

My influences are rather varied. My favorite drummers are (in no particular order): Phil Collins, Neal Peart, Lars Ulrich, Dave Lombardo, Igor Cavalera, and Mike Portnoy. There's more, but I usually just identify with band names than member names for my influences. Those are the names that stick out for me.

Anyway, I look forward to many a fine discusisons with all of you!

Hello ,

I'm Kristof Michiels, 27 years into my lifespan (and hopely lots of years ahead) !
My life in Belgium has all I need: good job (making money), perfect hobby (spending money) and all I dont' need (governement issues,... we are famous for that). My nickname has nothing to do with my life, its just a crazy idea I had years ago for nickname ... and I kept using it ;-) !

Anyway, drums !!!

I'm looking forward to meet more drummers (after I joined the PDF) and to be part of the biggest community on the web today.
I started with music a long time ago (since my 12th) playing the piano first. During my Metallica years I made the switch to guitar, however acoustic guitar didn't do it for me. I always was amazed by the energy that drummers (particulary rock-drummers) had ... the best way to feel the music !
So in 2003 (somewhere) I picked up my 1st set of drums (Mapex Mars series) and played proudly for a couple of months (breaking the one head after the other). After a while not only heads get broken (pedal and cymbalstand gave a snick) and I thought it would be a clever idea to look for a better set.

I made it to another store and came home with a Tama Rockstar 5 piece ... and its still the set I'm using today. There has been lots of things improved on both the set and me over the years: the kit did get better heads, cymbals and snares, and I have now my 4 year into drumming lessons !

Top 5 drummers: there's not really a 'best' drummer to me, but there are lots of influenses for me:

Belgium drummers: Davy Deckmijn (my teacher), Mario Goossens (Davy's teacher), Michael Schack, ...

International: Lars Ulrich (actually made me into drumming), John Tempesta, Mike Portnoy, Charlie Beanté, Dave Lombardo, Brad Wilk, ... , Gavin Harrison, Jojo Mayer, Benny Grebb, Thomas Lang, ...

Specs on my kit: later :-P

Practice: @ home and bands

Bands: 3

Styles: I like a bit of everything (except maybe country)

Take out food: Belgium frites !!!

Long story I see now ... and not even close :-P !

If you guys have any questions, I always take my time to answer ;-).

Have a nice day (or night),

Kristof

Hello all, new to drum forums in general, but have been playing now for about 20 years (off and on, considering 8 years spent in the military). I've recently gotten back into the swing of things, put together a new band back in my hometown and we have been writing songs. I guess there seemed to be a general format to follow with this introduction thread, so here goes...

real name.....Rob
age......35
how long been playing.......20 years
origin of user name......was in the Navy - Halon is a fire extinguishing agent used on ships, 451 degrees is the average temperature at which general combustibles (paper, etc.) will spontaneously ignite with no external spark or flame.
top 5 drummers........Danny Carey, John Bonham, Chris Pennie, Stewart Copeland, Dave Lombardo, Keith Moon, and Animal (from the Muppets) - okay that's more than 5
make of drumkit......Gretsch Catlina Series (6 piece)
make of cymbal......Sabian B8's mostly - likely upgrade to AA's soon when I have the $$
where do you practice.......Band Practice space
are you in a band/s.........Yes
covers or originals......Originals
what style of music..........Dark and heavy. Definitely of metal origins, but I like to incorporate other styles that don't fit the typical pattern, whether it's blues, world beat, tribal, jazz, you name it. Basically anything goes.
favourite take out food.......Thai
country...........USA
one really odd fact about yourself......There's a lot of odd facts about me - hard to name just one!
how did you start drumming..........It's my one true passion. I remember as a young kid, arranging my grandmother's pots and pans around me in a semi-circle trying to imitate the drums I saw on TV (I was maybe 4 or 5?), and using the cardboard inserts from those old-school coat hangers as drum sticks and whacking away on these pots and pans. Used to drive my grandparents crazy. Finally got a beat up old used kit from a kid down the street when I was 15, and have been playing ever since.

real name - Chris
age - 48
how long been playing - 15 years
origin of user name - My biggest influence on the world is on my kids. The rest is gravy.
top 5 drummers - John Bonham, Ian Paice, Jeff Porcaro, Steve Smith, Larry Mullen Jr.
make of drumkit - Sonor (Force 3000, Force 2001, Swinger)
make of cymbal - Paiste
where do you practice - I have a kit setup in my home office. It's great.... when I get off the phone with someone I can walk 15 feet and take out my frustrations.
are you in a band/s - yes, currently playing bass though (???)
covers or originals - mix
what style of music - Rock/Jazz Fusion
favourite take out food - Subway
country - U.S.A.
one really odd fact about yourself - color blind Canadian. (not sure that's really odd but...)
how did you start drumming - My original instrument was guitar (30 years) and when my kids were little I decided to get as many instruments around as possible just for them to experiment with and get the music blood flowing. So I got this drumset for free from a guy who wanted to get it out of his basement. So after I got it set up properly (another story), I started to mess around and got hooked. Drums quickly became my "first" instrument and still is to this day...with bass second and guitar now third.

Hi guys my name is Freddie Thomas i am 16 years old I live in Cleethorpes England. I dont yet have a drum kit but I am planning on buying one this week I have always had a huge interest in music and I just love listening to the drumming on songs such as Almost Easy, Toxicity and Scream Aim Fire in particular. I have been looking around and I have found what I think to be a good reasonable price drum kit.

Here is the link

If somebody could tell me if they agree that it is a good starter kit aswel that would be great. I also plan on buying Evans Emad Bass drum heads when I get some money.

As for me, as a longtime percussionist and drummer i could not begin to try and count the hours and playing with bands, playing along with commercially-available music and devising my own rudiments techniques in concert with the original 26 all classically-trained drummers are taught. Began playing in the early 70's. In my teens i learned how to compose, transpose and arrange. During late teens i was in front of a few recording labels in New York City after years of playing live yet my life was a bit, how shall i say this, fragmented (do the math, drummer... 1980's.... Miami). After a ten year hiatus beginning in my mid-20's, a fellow drummer sent me a drumset in my mid-30's and my love once again flourished. It evolved from a simple acoustic set to the latest and greatest Roland electronic set due to noise constraints (blasted neighbors and their complaints LOL). Now with a new home with excellent acoustic space came the opportunity to once again go acoustic.

PS: If anyone here has a line on a complete working set of Simmons SDX e-mail me. Thx.

I've just got back into drumming after a five year break and this place has been pretty invaluable to me in helping me prasctice my chops again after all this time.

I've filled the little question thing out so hopefully you can all delve deep inside my psyche.

Hey guys! I just registered a couple minutes ago and thought I should introduce my self in a thread like this... :P

Real name? Zack
Age? 12
How long been playing?: A couple months. Got a drumset around late August early September for my birthday.
Origin of user name?: This is pretty nerdy but... It popped into my head when thinking of a World of Warcraft username... Yeah I know.
Top 5 (1) drummers?: Ringo Starr, uhh... Thats it :D
Make of drumkit?: CB Drums (Bass Kick) Remo (High, Low, and Floor Toms) Pacific (Snare)
Make of cymbals?: Camber
Where do you practice?: A soundroom I helped my dad make in my garage.
Are you in a band?: Kind of, I jam with my older brother that plays guitar. Im tryin to learn the songs he does so we can play better!!!
Covers or originals?: Both. Some people make the song even better than what it used to be in my opinion.
What style of music?: Punk, Metal, Alternative, Irish Rock (Dropkick Murphys :D).
Favourite take out food: My dad's home cooking would qualify enough.
Country: Greenland!
One really odd fact about yourself: I haven't used this computer 'till 5 minutes later.
How did you start drumming?: I got a practice pad as a valentines gift, and I'd play that off and on. Then I started mentioning buying an electronic drum kit. I came home from my mom's house (Parents Divorced D: ) and a bag was on the table. "Early birthday present?" I say (It was like a week before my birthday) I look in the bag and find a pair of Vic Firths (as seen in my profile pic) My dad and stepmom show me into the garage. I see a cymbal, and a bucket. To their surprise, I play a pretty nice beat on them. The walk me around the corner to the kit I have today.

I just copied and pasted the intro from the first poster.

Hey Guys I'm Joe Newberry. I was nick named Joker when I was born cause my dad & brother said I looked like him. I have'nt been too active on the site too much the past few years but I'm gettin older now (I'll be 71) & I plan to be more active. I've got the neatest site. I dont mean to be bragging too much but I've posted a lot of videos & stuff I learned and I plan to do a lot more now that I have time. Check me out at http://www.luckysoft.net I was lucky enough to get to hang with Louie Bellson for about a decade & have known his family since the early 60"s Thats a picture of his first set of Remo drums on my profile. They made the Bass drums too small so I got them from him used. His brother Frank was my best friend before he died & his brother Tony was the coolest drummer also. I'm gonna make the PASIC this year. I never been there. Keep the rythym going guys. Send me emails Joe@luckysoft.net

had said hi in the general discussion.. but having got used to the layout of this forum.. i see it really belongs here.. so... hello :)

Im David, from the Edinburgh area. been playing drums since i was 11, but stopped playing in my late teens and hadnt touched a kit for about 10 years.

PIcked up yesterday, a gorgeous Mapex M-Birch kit, and i'm in the process of getting some Zildjian Avedis mastersound hats, and a custom A 17" crash.

Will be sure to pop some pics up when its all in place.

Now its time to practice and learn how to play properly again!!

What got me into Drumming: I was on vacation with my parents one year when I was 12, I was bored....so I grabbed a toothbrush and a comb, and started playing along to what my parents were listening to on my sleeping bag. My uncle was a Music teacher, so when we used to go visit my grandparents, my uncle lived 10 min away, I would play my uncle's Ludwig he had, and my cousin got on his guitar, and played till we couldn't play anymore. I had a natural love for the drums, so it just meshed really well for me.

Although I was a band geek and vocal geek, after high school, I gave up music completely. A pal of mine at work wants to get into music and I was thinking of taking up guitar. But when we went to the music shop at lunch I wandered up to the drum section instead. I thought now would be the perfect time to learn this! Even if I am absolutely dreadful, I think it would be fun!

how did you start drumming? In elementary school, already into 60's and 70's rock thanks to an older brother, saw a kid in class banging on his books with drum sticks, thought is was cool, rest is history.

That's about it. Will be posting gear pictures in the proper thread very shortly.

Thanks!

How did you start drumming: I honestly do not know. I had no childhood aspirations in music, exposure to drumming or role model drummers. In fact, the only drummer I personally knew was a schoolteacher of mine whom I did not get along well with. I took piano lessons for four years before deciding that I needed something different, so I guess I picked drumming at random. Of course, I am glad I did!

Hi guys,

I've set up a blog to document my progress through the Trinity Guidhall grading exams, and wondered if anyone here would be interested in taking a look.

It's at http://drumstudent.co.uk

Not much up there yet, except a review of the Moongel practice pad (no flaming please, I know opinion is divided on the "moongel versus pillow" debate :) )

Would be great if the blog turns out to be useful to someone! :)

Thanks,
Iain

Blogs can be cool. I've got one. My wife has one. You can really make it into anything you want. Like a "poor mans web site". She puts way more time into hers than I put into mine. But, hey, at $5 a month, I am the king of my own domain!

i have been a lurker (i read the forums but do not post/register) here for a while now... so, it's about time i introduce myself.

real name? chad
age? 28 and counting
how long been playing? complicated question. i got my first kit when i was 16, then i played everyday. moved away from home into an apartment at the age of 18, played once a week usually when i drove home to practice with my band. around age 20, i brought my kit home with me, where it collected a little dust in the closet for a couple of years until i could afford practice space. i kept the space for a few months, trying to get a band together that fell through. dropped the space and sold my kit. been drumming on everything except drums until recently when i purchased my new kit... which is still in the works. so, off and on since i was 16 years old.
origin of user name? the kit i purchased is a 7 piece pearl vmx 100% maple in glacier white
top 5 drummers? my current favorites are blake richardson (of between the buried and me) and tomas haake (of meshuggah). others include mike portnoy, neil peart, gene hoglan, vinnie paul, danny carey, terry bozzio, mike mangini, todd sucherman, chad sexton, ringo starr, john bonham... anybody that drums is awesome in my book, even little jonah (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gEbP5wbnVp8).
make of drumkit? pearl vision maple
make of cymbal? i am buying these next. i do not have them currently. i will buy all sabian (HHX, AA and AAX).
where do you practice? my office right now... rarely as it is not a very acoustic room and they are loud. i will be renting a practice room/studio once i have purchased my entire set or i am close to completing it.
are you in a band/s? not at the moment.
covers or originals? i will play covers or originals.
what style of music? i will play anything in the area of rock. i prefer something heavier or like the above mentioned two bands (between the buried and me, meshuggah).
favourite take out food? chinese food from this local chinese place down and street... and pizza.
country? US
one really odd fact about yourself? umm... i don't find anything i do odd. just being myself. i drum on everything, to everything...? maybe that's odd.
how did you start drumming? sophomore year in high school. we had an outstanding drum lime. they got me interested in drumming. later on, i was at a friends house one night. he played guitar/drums/etc and had a set at his house. he suggested we go play some music for the heck of it. i had never really played before but i sat down on the drums and just started playing. it all just made sense to me. that's how it all began.

see you around the forums!

Hello all. I've been lurking for a few weeks, after sitting behind a rock band drum kit and playing some cool songs, I realized how much I'd like to buy another kit. So I found this place and been reading about what you all think of the various low end name brand kits, watching the drum videos and really am excited about this resource to learn new music and share with other drummers.

I had a drumkit all through high school, jammed hair band and classic rock with a group of friends, never played a gig or knew anyone that would sing with us. We lived in a pretty small town and there wasn't anyone to take lessons from other than an independent study class I took from the band teacher. But never really excelled enough to learn more than parts of songs.

After I sold my kit for money to rent a place and ski bum at Big Sky. I ventured into hand drums and have built a few ashiko type drums, and a dundun set out of recycled douglass fir staves. Then I bought an Ivory coast djembe shell and put it together with the help of a friend and played with an African dance and drum group in Missoula, MT. It was great fun but I moved to WV and only play the Djembe occasionally.

So here I am in WV I've been exposed to bluegrass picking and am very impressed with how traditional music is spread throughout the community, and friends. I really appreciate the fact that most the people I know here can play and sing a tune. I do feel a little out of place, it seems like I'm the only person in WV that can't play a stringed instrument.

Anyway thanks for checking out my mini blog, I'm heading over to the drum gear section to see if anyone has any suggestions for helping me find a kit to suit my needs.

Heads up people. I'm Lowell, I've been playing Drums badly for a couple of years, but I don't worry about it too much, My main instrument is Seven-string guitar.

The current agenda is finding myself a drummer, so is there a musicians classifieds section anywhere? I couldn't find one? :S

In future I hope to learn as much as I can about the world of drums - I'm constantly trying to further my musical knowledge about everything.

Hope to see people around.

~ Lowell

You can probably get away with just a snare drum, as I've seen several "blue grass" minimalists do just that. Add a kick drum, and a hi-hat. Build from there. Welcome to Drummerworld.

Not really intending to join any bluegrass sessions right now, but it is in the back of my mind to learn how to get there some day. Mostly I just want to jam to some of my music and learn to play some swing grooves.

I already have a start on a kit, I'm just trying to decide to fill in the pieces with new or used.

Maybe I should post a what heads, snare wire and throw to put on my old wooden 15in Ludwig snare.

I haven't had time to formulate my which drumset question. Still haven't narrowed it down myself. Really thinking of saving for a nice new kit with rim mount hardware.

Meanwhile I could make a list of what I need.
1. Refurb My snare
2. Snare stand
3. Hi Hats and Hi Hat stand
4. Bass drum
5. Floor tom
6. Rack tom

Here's my brass collection.

I have a silver ring I cherish as if it were a son to me and I keep it on top of the clutch mechanism for my hi-hat when I play, because it gets in the way of my drumstick.
How did you start drumming?
Originally, I(laughably, admittedly) only started drumming when my friend got Rockband 1. I fell in love with rock drumming from that point on, and my parents' occupations as music teachers in my home county's school system fueled my subsequent interest. Almost two years later, I'm sixteen, I have a pretty good-looking seven piece Pearl set and I've improved considerably through self-teaching, lessons from my parents, experimentation, and learning from far more experienced percussionists and drummers.

Real name: Jeremy
Age: 22
Years of playing experience: 12.5
Origin of user name: It's an old tag from previous online communities.
Top drumming influences: Carter Beauford, Elvin Jones, Mitch Mitchell, and Jack DeJohnette. I'm not sure who #5 would be... possibly Dave Weckl or Mike Portnoy...
Make / Model of drumkit: 2003 Tama Starclassic Performer (birch shells; Charcoal Silk finish); 8x10, 9x12, 11x14 toms, 5.5x14 snare; 18x20 bass, though I often remove the 9x12 rack tom. Tom heads are Evans G2 clear on the batter side and Remo Ebony Ambassadors on the resonant side; snare is Remo Coated Emporer on batter side and Remo Clear Ambassador on the resonant side; bass is Evans G3 on batter side and a Evans G1 resonant.
Make of cymbal? Mix of Sabian, Paiste, and Wuhan ... I'm hoping to replace them in the next few years...
Where do you practice? Wherever I can, but generally at home.
Are you in a band/s? Not currently; my last group dissolved amicably about six months ago. (Half the band was moving to various locales across the country and world.)
What style of music do you play? Many, but primarily jazz and alt rock.
What country are you from? United States
One really odd fact about yourself: I've spent a few nights sleeping in snow caves -- and enjoyed it! Now my preferred method of self-torture is running.
How did you start drumming? This is embarrassing... When I was in third grade, some of my classmates and I pretended to be the Beatles. I got the part of Ringo, and it made me supremely interested in actually playing the drums. Two years later, at the time when all the kids in the school district were to choose an instrument for band or orchestra, my parents finally relented and allowed me to play drums if I also continued to take piano lessons. I did eventually drop piano as a serious pursuit, but never percussion. (I turned out to be pretty adept at keyboard and other orchestral percussion in addition to playing the kit.)

Age? 18
How long been playing? It’ll be eleven years, as of this October
Origin of user name? I’m an Armenian-American, and I like jazz. I think I’m being pretty straightforward.
Top five drummers? If you put a gun to my head and made me choose? Tony Williams, Craig Thatcher [my teacher back home], Mark Guiliana, Chris “Daddy” Dave, and Brian Blade.
Make of drumset? Whatever the practice rooms offer me. Back home, it’s a Tama but I can’t remember the exact make. Thinking about moving to DW in the next couple of years though.
Make of cymbal? Sabian
Where do you practice? The practice rooms, when I’m in Boston. When I’m home, you’ll find me in the living room with my kit and my headphones on.

Covers or originals? Both.
What style of music? Jazz [e.g. Jason Lindner’s “Now vs. Now”, Mark Guiliana’s “Thing”, John Coltrane, Miles Davis], fusion [e.g. Yellowjackets, Tony Williams Lifetime], classic rock [Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin], progressive [The Mars Volta].
Favorite take out food? Teriyaki House. When I’m back home, In n’ Out wins in a landslide.
Country? United States, though I’d like to travel to and/or live in Europe in the next ten or so years.
How did you start drumming? Played piano when I was younger, then moved to Southern California, met my drum teacher through a mutual friend, and it’s taken off from there.

Hey all. Noob here and wanted to say hello... Let me say that I have not been drumming for many years. I used to drum in a church band many years ago and because of time, space and financial constraints, I haven't picked up a stick in close to 20 years... Until I started going to a new church... I started running the sound system a few weeks back. The church is minus a band at the moment, but there is an electric drum set on the stage... I came in early with my iPod and hooked it to the sound system and went to town while nobody else was there.

The pastor walked in on me and now I might be practicing to be part of the band...

how did you start drumming? I've been into music as far back as I can remember and was always fascinated by drum sets... I used to see those little crap kits in the Sears and JC Penney Christmas catalog and always wished I could get one. Started in the school band in junior high playing the saxophone and right after that, I'd finally saved up enough Christmas/birthday money to buy my first set for $500. 3 months later convinced my band teacher to let me split time on the sax and drums in class. He realized that I was a pretty good drummer and pretty soon I ditched the sax for good. Played snare and bass drum through junior high and have been playing in bands and on my own ever since.

Hi all,

I've been reading the many fascinating and informative posts on the forum for awhile and have made a few random posts myself. In the interests of courtesy, I thought it time to introduce myself. My name is Phil and I am an American living just outside Amsterdam. I've been living here for almost 13 years now. Due to devoting my misspent youth to traveling the world, I've been away from drumming for more than 30 years. About a year ago, some guys from work asked me if I would like to jam with them. It has turned into a full-fledged band in the past 6 months. We are playing our first public gig on April 30th, I've bought a set of Gretsch Renowns with an unusual wrap finish called Diamond Fire: red sparkle at the edges turning into silver sparkle in the middle. I love 'em. Sabian AAX cymbals, for the most part, along with assorted other gear. I also started lessons since, strangely enough, I don't seem to be able to pull off the same fills anymore.

Long post, I realize, and I apologize for it. This is a great forum and I look forward to enjoying it for a long time to come.

Favourite take-out food? Gregg's pies
Country? UK
Odd fact? Cows have got four stomachs, but i've got five
How did you start drumming? When I was 8 years old there was a kids programme on TV called Rainbow. The music had a great drum fill to which I would grab two wooden spoons and smack hell out of a row of Lego boxes. Then I discovered Genesis.

Cheers!

Great website by the way.

Hi all!
My name is Greg and I'm dad to a few and still daddy to another and yes I am a drummer as well. Dadndaddy first.
Started playing around 1975. Stopped around 1988 to raise my children. When they got older I started playing again. Yes I wonder why I stopped for so long after realising how much it was to me after not playing for so long. But I'm here to stay!
Playing with 3 bands now and staying very busy. All blues bands.
Lately I've been really digging Keltner, Gadd, Vinnie, early Fleetwood and such. Raising Sand has some great drum sounds going on there as well.
Playing maple PDP's with A Customs and an Iron Cobra. Just got a Yamaha Anton Fig snare and it is sweet!

Well, what can I say?

I'm John, I'm 19 and I've loved the drums since I was 10 basically.

My influences are foremost Lars Ulrich, Bill Ward, Vinnie Paul, John Bonham, Dave Abbruzzese, Bobby Schayer, Tre Cool, Dave Krusen and Danny Carey. My favorite drummers are the aforementioned, plus Neil Peart, Buddy Rich, Keith Moon, Ian Paice and Matt Sorum. I don't want to list Peart or Rich as influences because I'd try to do what they do and fail miserably.

I'm an atheist - if that matters to anyone.

My set up is a basic Tama Imperialstar with a Remo snare head and Evans on the toms. I have a 12 inch china, 16 inch crash, hi hats and a 20 inch ride which I use as a crash stupidly, all Meinl.

I use Lars Ulrich's signature Ahead sticks.

I'm a meteorology, Metallica, pro wrestling and writing nerd. I write poetry often.

I also host my own comedy/weird news show called "John's Daily Dump." Here is a link to my latest show: http://thesop.org/story/radio/2010/04/04/johns-daily-dump-man-drives-car-into-plane-claims-jesus-told-him-to-punish-sinners.php You should give it a listen, as I'm always looking for critique and listeners.

Thanks for reading my crap, and I'm glad to be here!

Hi, my name is Steve

Here's a link to some of my playing. Two different sets of guys. 3 peice originals, the last 3 songs with electric drums, the first 4 on an acoustic set. These were done last month in Nashville Tennessee, the last three with electric Rolands 2 weeks ago in NYC. Oh, and 2 live takes of Jimi's "All Along The Watchtower" and "Little Wing" at an open mic in LA and another (Rehearsed) live open mic at The Bluebird in Nashville doing a Harry Potter parody song "Quiddich Ball" with a little of the Who's "Pinball Wizard" thrown in.

I'm an acoustic drum kit guy, but electric drums are a blast too!

The two Hendrix tunes are on a kit using an old 1918 28" Leedy bass drum and 1970 oversize Rogers toms, 1 up, two down, and the other four are on a funky little beat-up Tama Rock Star kit, 1 ride, 1 crash, hi-hats. 2up, 1 down. I just happened to have my cherished early COB Slingerland deep snare with me. On "Quiddich Ball" I used the house band's set of Pearls and the electrics are older Rolands. Once I got past the rubber cymbals and hats, I grew kinda' comfy with 'em.

www.myspace.com/hookmeisters

No rehearsing except for "Quiddich Ball", just spontaneous impromptu jams, some simple vocals on a couple, mostly just intstrumentals. Lot's of different players.

Found My Wings
04-14-2010, 07:22 PM
Hello all! I decided I would join the group after I finished reading the whole John Bonham thread. I decided I would post my first post in that thread and now is my second.....

real name? Jody

age? 38

how long been playing? A little while now as seriously as I can

origin of user name? I am an Aerosmith fan through and through. I loved them immensly as a teenager and when I had my kids I was too busy to keep up the love affair. When my daughter turned 13, she discovered Aerosmith and fell in love with them too. This rekindled the old flames and we both decided to get the aero wings tattoo. Mine is on my leg and hers is on her shoulder just like Young Lust. Hence, I have found my wings,

top 5 drummers? John Bonham, Kenny Aronoff (I love watching him!) Mick Fleetwood, Rick Allen and of course Joey Kramer

make of drumkit? I do not own one. The kit I am using is my sons. We bought it for him 4 years ago. It is a silvertone starter kit with evans heads. It would sound really good if my son would tune them properly! Funny thing is because this is my son's kit (and I respect that) he moves things around every now and then. After the last move, I now hit my knee before hitting the snare and when I go to crash, I hit dead air space. He is much bigger than I am ( I am quite tiny) and I am not allowed to move anything so I have to adapt to this kit that is spread out immensly. It is not easy or effective that is why I have been dropping the hint that I need my OWN kit. Fingers are crossed!

UPDATE, OK!!! My new starter set is coming today! I bought the Ludwig Accent Power series Drums (Black) with Paiste Cymbals! I can hardly wait until tonight!!!

make of cymbal? I get to change this to Paiste!

where do you practice? In the Basement

are you in a band/s? Only in my dreams

covers or originals? I guess I try both

what style of music? Classic Rock

favourite take out food? A&W

country? Canada

one really odd fact about yourself? I have a temporary free drum teacher from Taiwan who has been speaking english for only one year.

how did you start drumming? I have always liked drumming and decided one day not too long ago that I would learn how mostly by teaching myself.
