Hey Guys,
My name is Will Williams and I currently teach drum lessons in Chatswood, Sydney Australia to beginner and intermediate students. I have been playing the drums since I was 14 years of age. I'm now 26 so I guess that means I have been playing for 12 years. Wow, didn't actually realise it was that long...
Anyway, I absolutely love the drums, love playing them, love teaching them and love everything about them. Hang on, why am I here? I should be off bashing the drums somewhere :-)
Nice to meet you all. Looking forward to joining in on some of the discussions here...

Hello Drummerworld,
I've finally signed up after intending to do so for quite a while. I met one of your members, Jeff Johnson, at the store where I teach. Nice guy, and great player too. He came in for a lesson but we ended up chatting and exchanging ideas for an hour. I love that about drummers. There's never a bad time to talk shop!
Anyway, I filled in the little questionnaire as requested. Looking forward to being a part of the board.

Hello guys and gals,
My name is Thomas and I live in Denmark.
I've been playing drums for around 6 years, yet I haven't received any education up until two weeks from now. I currently play in 3 bands. One is a Meshuggah and Dream Theater inspired band, where we just play metal because we want to be able to play some tricky odd time signature songs and so forth. The two others are just cover bands trying to make a living besides school and weekend jobs.
I've just posted pictures of my set and everything in the "Your Gear" section.

I've been trolling here for a while, and I finally decided to jump in - so to speak. I would say I am a punk and jazz lover. before you read too much into that - let me just explain.
oh wait - hi. my name's Aaron. My name here is an inside joke between me and a buddy from college. we didn't do any drugs or alcohol and even if I was to explain how this name/phrase came about you wouldn't believe the previous sentence.
I was drawn to punk because of the energy and the "rawness" of it. part of that brought me to jazz. my mother was very much into jazz and I got into it through her Coltrane records. "Sunship" was my starting point into jazz. If you know that album, then you know what I'm talking about. growing up I played with some people with guitars who knew a few chords but could rock a stage.
I haven't played out in a long long time, but I keep practicing. I've been in Los Angeles most of my life, and most of the people here are flakes. I may need to move to another city to find any semblance of what I'm looking for...a good friend just moved to San Fran who is an amazing singer/guitarist, so I contemplate, but a move more than 5 blocks is a big deal to me...I like a lot of indie rock/punk/etc - if I could combine the Ramones' energy and passion with some of the montreal scene...d
I play Pork Pie drums. got a great deal on a 5 piece, and I think they sound amazing. any drums at that price should sound good, but I just really like the look and sound and feel of them. money well spent. The owner of the company is a great guy too.
I am barely internet savvy so when I finally play some music with people I will try and put it up somewhere so you can here it. I'll get a picture of my ugly mug up in the next week or so.

Hello from Atlanta, Georgia. My name is Jay. I'm a jazz drummer and composer.
My kit consists of three 1989 Ludwig maple drums, 10" and 13" toms, 18" bass drum, all with the "keyhole" badge, a 5"x14" DW Craviato solid-shell maple snare that matches the Ludwigs, just got that this year, 20" K Custom medium ride, 18" K medium thin crash, 16" A thin crash, 13" K hats, and DW hardware. I play Vic Firth 5A sticks.
Snare has coated Ambassador and resonant Ambassador, toms have coated Emporers top and clear Ambassadors bottom, bass has Remo pinstripe batter and coated Emporer front, no hole. All the drums are tuned high and open.
One funny thing about the Ludwigs. Supposedly Ginger Baker's signature is on the inside of the bass drum and the 13" tom. Anyway, somebody signed it, and the date is written the way the British write dates, which is month/day/year.
You can hear some of my songs at http://www.myspace.com/21bop.

This is a really tough one. I couldn't give a top 5 as my influences are way too varied.

make of cymbal?

At my work. I run a drumshop so sometimes I get paid to practice (does that make
me professional ??? haha)

I play in a metal band named Fracture and an Iron Maiden Tribute band named
"Coffin With Spikes". Soon to be starting up a jazz/blues covers band.
covers or originals?
Both
what style of music?
Varied - mainly rock/metal.
favourite take out food?
That's a toughie, but I do like foreign (to New Zealand) foods.
country?
I'm a kiwi from New Zealand.
one really odd fact about yourself?
Well I play drums in 2 bands. I drumtech for international touring metal acts who
come to New Zealand (I have teched for Nile, Decapitated, Napalm Death, The Black
Dahlia Murder, Cephallic Carnage, and Behemoth so far - Amon Amarth in 3 weeks!),
and I run a drumshop, so I'm totally surrounded by drums. Not so much odd, but cool!
haha
how did you start drumming?
I always loved the drums, but didn't start playing until I was 19 and could afford a
drumset (thanks to New Zealands Student Loan System! haha). As soon as I heard
Metallica's Black Album I developed a real desire to buy a drumset!

I'm an old guy, and finally bought a set after wanting one for 30+ years. Looks like things have improved since my days of active playing. I remember the 26 rudiments, looks like there's a few more these days.
I played in high school band for 8 years back in 1965-1972 (Yea, 8 years - the school was so small that we had to add grade school kids to fill the ranks.) Been a way from playing for a few years, so I'm gonna be a bit rusty.
I'm pretty spry for my age - I lead a Search and Rescue team, and volunteer as a fireman and rescue technician. (Gotta keep in shape since I retired from the Army)
I bought a six drum set, 22x18 base w/ double pedal, 8x7, 10x8 and 12x9 toms, 16x16 floor tom and snare, hat and two cymbals I'll be setting this up at home, with no plans to move it for gigs. My challenges are that I'm a lefty, and I stand 6' 6". I'm looking for any lefty or tall guy hints that others can share to save me a the hassle of figuring it all out by myself.

6' 1", and lefty, right here. Sound like a good plan, LD, I like your sizes. No advice to offer here just a little hint that works for me, which is to sit up high with my hands low.. legs perpendicular to the pedals, with the least amount of arm-flailing keeps my posture good..which means you play longer practice longer and it all feels good.
its all about posture.
Enjoy your re-entry into the drum world.

Welcome!
Dunno about lefty tips but being tall is good becuse you do not need to angle your toms so much. Thats just my opinion, mind.

Hey guys...
Thought I would take a moment to introduce myself. I'm a professional drummer living in Mechanicsburg, PA (right outside of Harrisburg). I recently took a day job after getting married...however, I still make the bulk of my living off drumming, and before getting engaged, was living JUST off that. I am 26 years old, and have been playing since I was 2. That's not a typo...dad was a drummer. Anyway, I have had a ton of awesome experiences while drumming, and look forward to sharing some advice, tips, hints, etc, and getting the same from the other drummers here.
Rock.

Born in Istanbul, 1977. My interest in drumming goes back to my junior high schoool years but for a precise starting point I would take my first year in high school cause that was the first time I have ever taken my interest to one step further and grabbed drumsticks instead of watching my seniors play in school bands and such.
I laid low and minded my own business from 1993 to 1995 playing in the high school orchestra and then came the 1994 Hurriyet Altin Mikrofon Second Prize. (Hurriyet is a national paper and the competition was sponsored by it and it was aimed for young audiences and the competitors were high schools from all around the country. That was the first time I had ever played with an e-drum set. The hexagonal pad Roland. :) )
In that very same two years I also worked with my beloved friend Emir ISILAY and had the chance to be a guest drummer in two of his solo concerts. Then we formed a band called PHARAOH with Emir and Evren GULCIG(Bass Guitar - Gripin). Evren was playing guitar and my sister Zeynep was our bass player at that time.
From 1997 to 2000 I was involved in rehearsals and recording sessions of a funk-rock band from Izmir called FOURMATION and I played in a jazz band in Smyrna Hotel's jazz bar as a guest musician for two months in 2000.
From 2000 to 2004 I could say I haven't touched a single drumstick. Then in 2004 I met Tunc DEMIRTAS(bass, back vocals) and Uygar SAKARYA(vocals, guitar and harmonica) and formed NANIK ATAK. After a long rusting period it took me several months to get in proper physical and musical shape to catch up with the guys. It took the band two years to get to the level of recording a demo and in April 2006 we recorded NANIK ATAK's first demo. Three of the songs in my profile are from that 2006 demo.
The overall production progress for the album was far from what we all have expected so we decided to leave it at that. Then we entered Nokia Super Sound 06 and made it to the first 40 among 750 songs unexpectedly.
In 2007 we had released a music video for the song "Doner Miydin Geriye" in cooperation with Digital Film Academy Istanbul and had really positive feedback for that.
Still being unsigned at the moment and having several changes in the band's line-up, the original band members of NANIK ATAK haven't lost their enthusiasm and still trying to work on recording sessions and trying to find a way to share their music with the audience. We had several live performances and concerts in the past couple of years.
My Influences

Gavin Harrison - Omar Hakim - Dave Weckl - Dennis Chambers - Bobby Rondinelli - Mike Portnoy - Simon Phillips - Wolfgang Haffner - Akira Jimbo - Keith Carlock - Steve Gadd - Steve Smith - Vinnie Colaiuta - Jeff Porcaro - Cozy Powell - Carmine Appice - Vinnie Appice - Dom Famuloro - Terry Bozzio - Buddy Rich - Tony Royster Jr - Kenny Aronoff - Jeff Porcaro - Jack DeJohnette....

how did you start drumming? When I was in the 6th Grade, I was in the band, only thing the teacher would let me do is wail on the big cymbals during a Sousa March, said I had no stick to it ness for the drums. Plus Ray Triola was really good so I quit.
Turns out, I have always wanted to play again. I am what they call "adult learner". some old guy with a mid life crisis. But I cant help it, I dig the drums, started taking lessons, bought a practice pad and sticks, got a video or two and I am learning the rudiments. Feels pretty good on the brain.
So far, I have only practiced on a kit at the music store where I take lessons, I dont knwo what I am doing yet but that has never stopped me in the past.
I am not financially stupid, like Ritchie Rich, poor little rich kid but I am a working professional. I plan to get into the sport so which kit should I buy?
From what I have read, and being a traditional guy, I know I want maple. I like Pearl and Ludwig, obvioulsy the big brands. I have had luck wiht spending a little more in the beginning and it saves time later. I am into Bicycling, I would advise a new cyclist, buy a bit higher end and you wont buy twice. I dont want to go crazy or give the impresison that i will show up on a club ride on a 8000 Colnago and not make 30 miles, it is that kind of scenario. So any advice from this group would be most appreciated.
Oh, Kieth Moon was pretty good too but I missed the concert, he died the next year.

MATTHIAS RUMPF
02-12-2008, 10:38 PM
hi- my name is matthias rumpf, born 1959 in Dortmund /Germany.
first i got classical training on snare drum, when i was about 16. i had a good teacher
at that time. he was solo-tympanist in the symphonic orchestra of dortmund.
later i studied jazz in cologne. leader was jiggs whigham, a trombone player and
(a wonderful) teacher from ohio / usa.
all those years i worked a whole lot on snaredrum and drum set. and i also played a
whole lot in all kinds of bands, from dance-music to jazz or rock.
i am still into working and learning. i collected pretty much stuff, that i wrote for snare drum
and drum set. now i will bring out a drum book, first in a small number of exemplars,
later, i hope to find a professional firm, printing and selling musical books.
the same procedure will follow, in showing my CD with drummusic, entiteled
"under construction", a cd with only drums on it, just 3 microfons, all live played.
i am happy, introducing myself to DRUMMERWORLD now.
keep the faith

Real name: Michael
Age: 26
How long been playing: Started playing when I was 10 years old and played for 9 years. Then I stopped for 6 years (in University and living in places that aren't "drum friendly"). Started playing again about 1.5 years ago.
Origin of user name: My band gave it to me. I thought it was a great stage-name.
Top 5 drummers: Carter Beauford, Dave Weckl, Steve Gadd, Vinnie Colaiuta, Travis Barker, Gene Krupa. Okay, that's 6 drummers - you caught me.
Make of drumkit: Yamaha Birch Custom Absolute w/ Vintage Natural finish.

Are you in a band: Yes - Clifford Fastco
Covers or originals: Originals. We play the odd cover here and there just for fun.
What style of music: Rock/Alternative/Progressive/Punk/Acoustic
Favourite take out food: Quiznos

One really odd fact about yourself: Usually, you have a house to put your kit in. I on the other hand, have a kit and now I need to buy a house for it.
How did you start drumming: My dad's a drummer and I used to play his drums with wooden spoons when I was a little kid. In 5th grade Music Class, we had to pick instruments - I didn't want to play anything that I had to breathe into and I thought drums were the coolest thing to play (still do). When I saw them in the back of the room, it was game over.

Hi,
I'm new to your forum and just thought I'd say hello. I've been spending some time trawling the threads and there is some really great advice here.
I've just started to play the drums and have a Ludwig CS Custom (Fusion) kit with Paiste PST3 cymbals. I've been messing about on my kit for a few weeks but have just started weekly lessons and have found these to be invaluable.
Hope to be speaking with you all in the future !
Cheers SB

Welcome to the forum! Everyone here is awesome. There is never a shortage of good conversation and things to learn.

Snare: I had my dad's old 70's Super-sensitive snare 6,5"/14" and he want it back so i bought a supra-phonic black beauty brass on brass 6,5"/14" it sound amazing of course. All my hardware is from the latest heavy duty ludwig series, double-braced, two foot hi-hat plus 3rd little leg hi-hat stand works totally smoothly its the best hi-hat stand I've seen, speed-king kick pedal, convertible cymbals stands.
Cymbals: Paiste from 2008 series, just got them! Hi-hat: Rude sound-edge 14", Rude crash-ride 19", Rude Ride-crash 20" and 2002 wild ride 22". carried in paiste delux 22" bag. I use also for smoother stuff the Zildjian A custom 20" ping ride.
I practice in a rented space from a drylaundry downtown Sherbrooke PQ canada, we built a studio for our band.
I'm in a band called Semperfi www.myspace.com/semperfimusic777 we are currently recording an EP to get a label deal. Its our own compos but we are having fun to do covers just for practice and for fun.
Its really weird to say but we called it Northern Rock but its a mix of all our main influences, Underoath, Led Zep, Thrice, radiohead, arcade fire etc. We have folk songs, electro-acoustic, post-hardcore metal-core songs, classic rock songs so its pretty alternative lol.
Hum, Harveys, Subway, Super Pita, French baguette sandwichs, McDonalds
Québec, Canadaaaaa(french-canada)
I learned to love the coldness and humidity of where i live.
My dad started me up at 4 seriously, he was a drummer since he was 14, his dad was a musician all his life and his uncles too.its in the genes.

Hi guys, sorry for the mix up, my friend actually registered the username for me :) Anyway, I am from Serbia, Balkan, Europe... I've been playing for quite some time now... I played Pearl Masters MMX (which I still have) and just recently bought this DW collectors. (I really like it, I think that it sounds better than MMX, but I'd like to check out Reference :)... I compose a lot of music, and have been mostly stuck in my room for the last ten years, just composing, practicing and playing various instruments :) For some unknown reason, I decided to do a bit of promotion of my works, and hopefully, soon, I'll open my web site, myspace etc. Anyway my music is mostly not very drummer oriented, but as I like drums (A LOT), I hope to one day make something interesting (hopefully a bit more arranged and purposeful) drum wise...

This seemed like as good a place as any to post this, so here goes.
I'm getting back into drumming after many years away. Like many drummers my age, I started playing after hearing "The Spirit of Radio" on the radio way back in high school. I thought Peart's playing was the coolest thing I'd ever heard.
Also, a friend of mine's brother played the drums and I watched him play along to Zeppelin's "Living Loving Maid" and it looked liked so much fun, so I bought his old crappy kit for $75 bucks and banged away for a few months. (interesting sidenote: he also turned his little cousin onto drumming at a really young age when he was visiting Illinois from San Diego - that little cousin is Atom/Adam Willard from Rocket from the Crypt and whatever band he plays for now).
After my first lesson, I improved immensely overnight and continued w/ the lessons for about a year. I 'm left-handed and was playing a left-handed set-up, but once I started lessons, my teacher had me play on a righty kit - I'm really glad he did! Not being able to sit in would be the worst. I wasn't the greatest student in terms of practicing - I didn't have the patience for the books/rudiments, so I pretty much would just play along to Rush records with my headphones on. Got to be pretty good, but only in a one-trick-pony kind of way. Played classic rock covers in a few bands during high school, but didn't play much after that. I could always hold my own if I sat in, but always knew I could be so much better.
Probably the coolest things that happened to me in the last 10 years were getting the chance to play with Rick Neilsen from Cheap Trick and sitting in on Matt Chamberlain's kit during sound check. I'm from Cheap Trick's hometown and I was in a dive bar/restaurant my friend's family owns and Rick requented the place from time to time. He walks in, decides he wants to play and asks if anyone plays bass and drums. I sheepishly said "I play drums" and the cook played bass, so we get up on stage with the house gear and jammed for 45 minutes. He's so cool - he picks up the guitar, fiddles around with it for about 10 seconds and goes to town. Amazing experience.
I got to sit in on Chamberlain's kit during a tour with Fiona Apple. My cousin drove one of the tour buses and introduced me to the band. I hung out w/ Matt for about 45 minutes on the tour bus as we watched a VH1 "Behind the Music" episode. Playing a professionally miked kit on stage before a show was SO cool.
Anyway, fast forward to last year and I bought a set of Vdrums (TD12) since I live in a condo. Played whenever I had the chance and just this month have been working on all the things I should have 30 years ago - rudiments, lessons plans with left and right hand leading, etc.
Before, I could only do single stroke, paradiddles and triplet rolls. I never learned a double stroke roll and after one month or practicing rudiments EVERY day (30 minutes minimum) the progress is definitely evident.
Another cool thing is I've been doing the "pay it forward" thing by turning a couple of nine year olds onto drumming -one is my best friend's nephew and the other is a really good friend's son. I loaned one of them my old Sonor kit and bought the other one a used Tama gig kit. They're like sponges with everything drumming now and it's been a great bonding experience. I ride them pretty hard about daily practicing since I don't want them to make the same mistake I did.
I took my first proper kit out of storage and cleaned it up pretty good - it's a Ludwig 6 piece kit from 1968 - wish I'd known vintage drums were going to be so desirable or I would have taken better care of them (yeah right). Don't have the room to store it, so I'm just going to see what I can get for it on craigslist.
Want to get back w/ acoustic drums and want to play w/ other musicians just for fun, so I bought a used Export ELX 4 piece shell pack and a Pork Pie Li'l Squealer 5x12 snare. I still have old Zildjians from the early '80's - 20" inch Deep Ride, 14" Quick Beats (hate them, not very versatile) and a 16" medium-thin crash.
Anyway, Lots of good advice on the board from what I've seen, so I'll be spending a lot of time in the archives section and looking for veteran advice when I decide to upgrade my kit and cymbals

Hi Friends,
I am a budding drummer who plays along the Who records. I never had a teacher and I know I am not playing by the rules but I was told I play a lot like Keith Moon. I never use hi hats and steady beats.
Recently I am playing along the stones records the Keith Moon style with unpredictable rolls etc.. etc... I guess if Charley Watts know about this he would freak out.
honestly I am no expert but having a lot of fun by playing along The Who records.
Hopefully I will find like minded friends here.
humbly

I play a crappy Peavey kit that I have pretty much got the best out of by getting new heads, hardware, Better tom mounting system. I will have some pics up soon, and in my opinion, it looks VERY classy for a peavey kit. I plan on moving up to a Mapex M Birch SOON. But enough about my kit, and something about me.

What up; Names chris.
My age is seventeen, eighteen in sep.
I play a secondhand pdp basic rock kit.
Paiste cymbals handed down from my father, who taught me to play the drums.
My hardware came with the pdp kit, except for a premier cymbal stand given to me by my father.
Ive been playing for almost four years now...
My biggest drumming influences are Moon, Bonham, Mitchell, and B. Rich.
My style of playing.....hmmm...... well, i have a tendency to attack my drums (thank god for double ply skins!)
Im hoping to start saving up for a more professional kit soon.
Im not currently in a band, but jamming out with friends is fun enough.
How i started playing? idk, my dad used to play for me when i was a baby, and i was always interested.

How long have you been playing? 25 years and still enjoy a good musical challenge! I'm just reverting to matched grip and a total kit rearrangement for something different. A little scary but definitely fun! These forums (and the users/contributers) have been extremely helpful to me during this process. My town is isolated to say the least so it's great to jump on here and look for a handy solution or some great advice. My many thanks go out to all here!

Apparently I had good rhythm so it was a natural progression to move me to a full kit and take it from there. I couldn't reach the pedals until age 6? I can reach them now. : D
Cheers guys,

Hey, I'm just a lowly guitarist who has the utmost respect for the drumset, and it's necessity
I have been blessed by more drum clinics than guitar clinics
I love the playing of all of the household, and near household names, but the ones who I don't believe get the hype like they should are John Robinson, Micheal White, Raiford Griffin, Sean O'Rourke, Mark Zonder, just off the top of my head

Hi, I'm Bob. I've been playing since 1970. I play a 74 Gretsch 5 piece with Zildjian and Paiste. I am 51 years old. I currently play with a contemporary Bluegrass/ jam band from Connecticut called The String Band. I've been playing with them since Feb. of 08. I have a jazz background, so I like to incorporate that feel into the bluegrass style. I found this music to be a challenge. None of the licks that I was used to playing fit with the music. That's why I settled on adding jazz to the mix. So far it has worked. I have gotten many compliments. When I was a kid a guy from the Bronx in NYC started calling me Bob-Da-Drumma. That's how I got my nickname. I learned to play in a drum corps in Trumbull Connecticut when I was in seventh grade.

Welcome, and just so you know, that guy who posted above me owns the joint. And he's a really nice fella at that.
I, too am a late bloomer. I started in 2002 when I was 26 and took weely lessons for about three months. I exhausted my talent pretty early on and now all I got is from working at it ;-)
As for the site, it is indespensible. The insights from the members and wealth of questions answered (that you didn't even know to ask) are impressive.
Welcome to your new addiction. We have about 16,000 pushers at this connection.

Michael Zagon
08-02-2008, 11:33 PM
Father Charly Wiltshire (died 2005) put the foundation-stone of his impact things the career, so to Michael Zagon, to be which knew to inspire its son as large swing and buddy rich fan in the infancy for this kind of music. Thus it appeared for Michael already very early that he would probaly strike the drums. A kindersnare which its father gave him to the birthday, marked then the actual beginning of the efforts of the young Michael to bring it sometime to the professional drummer. Into which musical direction this striving would go mainly determined then a LP which gave to hear Michael's sister Christel it a daily, and which its entire musical conception of the world with a mark placed completly on the head: Made in Japan of Deep Purple - polarized, with the great drumsolo of Ian Paice The MULE. At school Michael could later, instead of participating on the religous education, to visit a music teacher, who gave him its first impact things instruction. First live experiences and soon then also the next milestone in the career of the engaged Drummers followed: The first studio recording. This brought Michael then also to a hurdle: Click-tightness in Drumming!! Since this experiences Michael plays both with its exercises and in the studio exclusive with a clicktrack or a loop. By enthusiastic and hard training it succeeded to Michael within short time to be applicable by its clicktight at any time and everywhere also without long samples with it unknown musicians. Michael lived several years in Berlin. During this time he dedicated himself to the most different music styles, from avant-garde (easily on a drumkit made of metal) to skirt / pop (singer- songwriter) Also it parallel to its own commitments and his training, took further instruction with various teachers. In the last years Michael dedicated itself to among other things different volume projekts, did however never to take also further with the most different teachers instruction always anxious, to become acquainted with new techniques already well known techniques to improve and its personal style further develop. This culminates momentarily in the attendance of the Ecole de batterie, who teaches the D' Dante Agostini school. For over one decade Michael is active also as impact things teachers.
Education: Music-School Berlin Kreuzberg, Buddy Hoffmann, Andreas Griefiengholt, Uwe Petersen, Sven Kopatz (Ecole de Batterie Osnabrück) workshops with Steve Smith, Chester Thompson, Dom Famularo.

Where am I from? New Zealand.

Jody LeCompte
08-04-2008, 07:32 AM
Name? Jody LeCompte
Age? Eighteen.
Been playing for? Music - 4 years, Percussion 2 weeks
Origin of username? It's my name, I'm just not terribly creative.
Top 5 drummers? Drummers: Steve Jordon, Steve Gadd, Jack DeJohnette, Chris Coleman, and Tony Rooster, Jr. Percussionist: Bobatunde, Daniel Sadownick, Tim Donavan, Arturo Stable, David Silliman
Make of drumkit? I don't play kit. My djembe is a custom build by a maker located somewhere in jolly o' Africa. I was introduced to him through a percussion graduate aide at the local university.
Make of cymbal? None, but I've got a piggy bank for a Sabian HXX to do some mixed percussion.
Where do I practice? I do most of my practice mentally. I practice my heel-toe anywhere with a flat surface. Everything else takes place in the attic at home.
Am I in a band? Two at the moment. A Primus meets Peeping Tom style band in which I play guitar and djembe, and an acoustic side project that I play fretless bass in.
Covers or originals? Either or. I'd be anal to feel stronger about my work than anyone elses
What style of music? Anything really. I have a weird trait of listening to entire albums because I like one cymbal the drummer uses or a singer strikes my fancy when they use their falsetto. Predominately though I'm just into jam and groove oriented music. Gospel, R&B, Jazz, Blues, and Funk.
Where am I from? NOLA, Louisiana.
An odd fact about myself? I get my days mixed up and come off as a compulsive liar because of such.
How did I begin drumming? I started playing bass at a pretty young age, then later picked up guitar. I was always more fascinated with the rhythmic possibilities of playing melodics and focused less on the actual notes. My studies ran deeper and deeper and ultimately I came straight to the source. Percussion. I was sitting down to lunch at a friends house and he mentioned having a friend whose business partner works in Africa buildings djembes. I pulled the trigger and ran with it,

From time to time I'll post links to their newsletter about deals and events if that's cool. I look forward to joining the community, discussing drums, learning and contributing whatever I can.

real name? Mark
age? 33
how long playing? played for about 12 years when i was a kid, just back now
username? its my favorite story by Tolkien
top 5 drummers? when i started playing as a kid - Lars Ulrich, but then i discovered Dennis Chambers, then some old vhs clinic of Terry Bozzio's,Steve Gadd is just great, but Benny Greb may be one of the most funky, off beat and inspiring drummers i have ever heard - the guy is just awsome!
drums? Yamaha Stage Custom Birch ( natural laquer finish )
cymbals? Meinl Byzance Traditional's
practice sessions? the lowly basement
in a band? no, but maybe down the road........
music stlye? i'm not good enough to have a 'style', i just like the offbeat and funky stuff
odd fact about me? i'm 33 years old and i still play with Lego
how i started? found my dad's old junker set in the garage attic when i was 8, started played a little snare in Sea Cadets at 12 ( and with enough begging, parents paid for some proper lessons at St. Johns Music), and later hooked up with a really terrible garage band ( i include myself in this description) but then just got away from the drums about the age of twenty, but getting my daughter involved in music ( guitar of all things! ) really inspired me - and so i'm getting back at it!

Hello every one nice discussion board here happy to join in, hope you'll all have me. I can't figure out how to put the question format on here so I'll just tell you some of the basic's. As if anyone really cares.... Anyway. I'm Timothy S, I chose my user name based on the city my drums were made in. I've been playing since I was 11, lessons the whole bit, But I did go through a spell were I didn't play for 10 years. I always wanted too just didn't make it happen. My influences are in 2 categories, core and current. My core guys are Bruford Baker and Bosio, My current's are Charlie Quintana (Mike Ness circa 1999) and Scott Churilla (Reverend Horton Heat circa 1996) I am currently playing an old American Slingerland that needs a re-wrap and re-chrome but it's authentic. I have cymbals like a bride, some old some new some borrowed some blue. I get to play on friday nights with my American roots music band, at a friends hall. We have a full compliment of sound equipment which makes it a lot of fun. We take a lesson from Mike Ness in his interpretation of old Country and pop songs of Americana. I started playing drums out of insatiable desire. When I heard certain songs I wanted to play the drums to them. My interest was/is always about the songs as a whole more than the drummers parts individually. If a drummer is doing something extraordinary, the song had better be too. I don't eat take out and As an odd fact I guess I like the under dog. I prefer Epiphones' to Gibsons', old,old tube rigs to Marshalls', and old school drums to modern marvels.
