Hey all, just wanted to introduce myself. My name is Zack Albetta, I'm 25 (26 in two days) and I live in Kansas City, Missouri. By day, I'm a grad student at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music, working on a Master's degree in Jazz and Studio music. By night, I'm a professional musician playing mostly jazz, but some other things here and there.

I posted a pic and hopefully I can post some audio soon--can someone tell me the easiest way to do that? I'm talking about taking something off itunes and posting it here. Is there a way to do it without screwing around with putfile or youtube or whatever? These new -fangled computer contraptions baffle me sometimes.

Looks like a cool forum, glad to be here.

how did you start drumming? Have wanted to play for 20 years, but long story short, I got a pair of these electronic "rock beat" sticks for Mother's Day - and I whinged about how much I wish I could learn the drums - so hubby told me to go have lessons, and we managed to squeeze a drumkit into our already overcrowded house.

It was only inevitable that I'd join some major drum fourm. Glad to be here, now on with the introductions!

real name? Albert Francis Gabriel Calamita
age? 17 (18 in a few weeks)
how long been playing? Started when I was 7, phased out over the years but got back into it about a year ago, and intend to stay dedicated this time.
origin of user name? I usually go with something else for a fourm, but decided to go with something new. Obviously its a play on my name - people at school and some friends tend to refer to me as "Big Al" (even though I am rather skinny) and Cal is a semi-common nickname for males in my family.

make of drumkit? 5 piece Tama Swingstar
make of cymbal? Sabian B8 (13" hi-hat, 14" crash, 18" ride. I have a 16" crash as well but I need another stand)

what style of music? Rock, Blues, and a little Jazz
favourite take out food? Chinese Chicken
country? USA
one really odd fact about yourself? I use Vic Firth sticks, with Ahead grip tape while wearing Vater gloves (dont know if that counts, but oh well =P)
how did you start drumming? I'm not sure what exactly inspired me. I was raised on rock and roll (both my parents are big classic rock fans, and my dad would always play songs on his acoustic guitar by The Eagles, Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton, Bob Seger, etc and even wrote a song or two I think... He's a very good guitarist) and though I never atteneded any real concerts when I was a kid I do remember after watching music videos and listening to songs on the radio I had a fasciation with the "big loud instrument".... I then started taking lessons..

Hi people, How do you do?
I'm a new member of this amazing forum. I've been checking the page for information about the greatest drummers, solos mp3 and videos. I'm the son of a musician and I inherited the love for drums. Actually I'm taking lessons from my father and I am studying by myself too. Drummerworld clinic resources have been a great way for me to improve myself as a drummer and the biographies have let me know about the legends of this art.

My music: I love jazz...
The drummers I admire: Dennis Chambers (I also like Santana music), Jojo Mayer, Buddy Rich, Alex Gonzáles (Maná), and José "Joe" Aguilera (I believe Joe should be included in Drummerworld list of artist. He is simply amazing. He is consider the best reggae roots player in Central America. He have recorded many cds with famous musicians of Costa Rica and have played in the same escenary with world famous artist too.)
I would like to...: be one of the greatest drummers of all time ( I have a lot to do for making this dream come true, but I'll fight for it!)

My e-mail is fabioaguilera11@yahoo.es

Hello mate! I to have been very helped with the solos and mp3 songs on this site. Buddy Rich as you say is a very experienced drummer.I've heard Dennis chambers sometimes and i like him too. Travis barker is an underestimated drummer just cause his way of music style but i think he's good at holding the tempo. Its good that you've start playing drums or i dont know if you've been playing for long now. Are you in a band or something like that? its very good being in a band you get to learn much more than just drumming alone. Like cooperating and such. Well good luck! mate!

Hello all. New forum member here. After lurking for a bit, this looks like a good community so I decided to register.

Anyway, my name's scott. I'm 19, been playing for about seven years now.

I was into metal for my younger days and although I still listen to it more than any other genre, I'm not as interested in the straight-up speed, double bas, blahblah playing that much any more. My last band just split up after a short but fun two years.

I'm an admitted gear-head, so that's the forum I'll probably be in the most. Nothing better than a well set-up kit!

Right now I'm using a...

Tama Rockstar that I refinished. Standard 12,13,16,22. Usually set up as a 4-piece.
Pearl Chad Smith Signature Snare
Zbt Hats (ouch!)
Paiste Sound Formula Heavy Ride 20" -or- Ufip Rough Ride 20" (both for sale btw)
Sabian HHX Evolution crashes, 16" and 18"
Wuhan Chinas 16" and 19"

Recently I've been drawing inspiration from: Tim Alexander, Nicko McBrain, Bill Bruford, a few others....

See you around. Sorry for my absurdly long post!

How did you start drumming?I love music and my fingers are to short for strings and I just love feeling the beat of the drums.I had a 15 year old boy show me how to work the bass along with the hats and toms it was magical.

Well..."Hot Cross Buns" on sax wasn't nearly Clarence Clemons cool, so I opted for fun and switched to percussion. A great decision on my part. ;)

Hello everybody! I've been a drummerworld.com guy for awhile - a great site. I noticed a few weeks back that there's a forum now, cool!

I'm a mid 30's guy, living in Chicago (logan square area). I play in a band called Jazz Conpiracy, and get calls for other gigs every so often too. By day (when I'm not practicing...), I pay the bills by operating as a freelance web developer. I have my own drumming site in the works.

Gear-wise, I play Gretsch Customs most of the time (18, 14, 12) with a 14" hammered Gretch brass snare. Cymbals are a mix of Zildjian and Istanbul - thin and dark. I have a Meinl Dragon Profile Ride that I whip out occationally too.

Cheers folks!

Welcome, stoptime!

Great to hear from somebody from Chi-town. I live out in the western burbs, but work downtown.(I'm a copywriter during the day to pay the billz.) I play in a band named The Crown Vics and sub for The Rhythm Rockets. I've definitely heard of Jazz Conspiracy, before—cool!

Have you been down to Steve Maxwell Pro Percussion on Michigan Ave? It's a great store / museum for vintage and custom drums. They specialize in Gretsch, so you'd really dig it.

You can check 'em out here:

http://www.maxwelldrums.com/

Anyway, welcome once again. And who knows? Maybe we'll bump into each other sometime!

Oh man... Maxwell's is a candy store for jazzers and guys from the CSO, I've picked up 2 Gretsch kits from there and am on a first name basis with Ben. Love that place!

I've heard of both your bands as well, just shared a stage with the Rockets last summer at Pops' Bastille Day thing.

Thanks for the note!

Hey Chicago drummers, feel free to give me a shout when looking for drum gear. I own a guitar & drum shop in the northwest suburbs, Offbeat Music in Lake Zurich. I'm a bit smaller than the other two stores mentioned (and they are great stores) but I do carry some unique product that you might find interesting. I would really like to meet some DW forum members in person and would definitely try to make it worth your while if you took the ride out.

Yeah, Ben's the MAN. Great shop and great people—you really can't go wrong.

Love the DrumPad, too. I used to be much closer to it, but I'm in Naperville now, so it's a little bit of a haul. Either place rocks. And either place usually gets me in trouble with my wife ;)

how did you start drumming? um er uh

Hello. I'm a bass player, electric bass guitar. I love drums! If I wasn't a bass player I'd be a drummer. Wanted to be a drummer in grade school orchestra but the music teacher said she "didn't need any more Ringos" (this was around '65 - yeah I'm older than dirt) so I took up dbl bass viol instead. Played that thru 8th grade and then switched to electric.
Played in stage band and jazz choir in High School and played rock high school dances on weekends throughout Washington State.
Went to trade school after graduating in '74 1/2 and was a draftsman for a few years gigging occasionally.
Went to college to learn music theory in Ellensburg, WA. Started playing upright again but dropped it again after leaving.
After that played in Top 40 bands mostly around the Seattle area and the west coast incl Alaska
In mid 80s played in original bands out of Seattle and worked day jobs
Left Seattle in 96 and moved to a small town on the southern Oregon coast. Played in a heavy original band for a couple of years and an original jazz-rock-fusion band for a few years. The greatest find was a jazz gig with two older cats, piano and drums, playing standards and bebop on Saturday nights about half of the year. Drummer is a GREAT player named Ted Owen. Played behind some jazz greats in the Vancouver, BC area in the forties and in the SF Bay area in the fifties and early sixties. Really a smooth player and cracks me up with some of his licks and shenanigans.
Anyway Sandy Nelson turned me on to this site and I'm hooked! Love reading about all the great drummers past and present, rock and jazz.

Maybe I can help out if someone has questions or needs a viewpoint from the bass player perspective. I LOVE being a part of the rhythm section - some ppl like the frosting - I like the cake!

Shaneth

Hey guys, I'm Shane Duckworth from PA.

I've been playing the drums for about 10 months now. I'm pretty much a beginner who is eager to learn many different styles of play and techniques. I started out with and still have a black Ludwig 5-pc, and I'm hoping to add onto it later when I have racked up a god amount of cash for my hobby support. I took private snare drum lessons, but what I really wanted to play was the full set. I think music is special, and I started to play percussion because it is something that I am decent at and I feel that I have the abilities to become really good at it. It is also something that I can have fun with.

So far, I haven't broken a single stick during my practices. I use Vic Firth 2BNs and I'm not much of a heavy hitter. IMO, I think that the coolest part of the drumset is the hi hat; It just sounds really sweet.

For myself, I think that a way to become a better drummer is to listen to a wide vareity of styles from other drummers, then combine the best and incorporate them into your own style, but that's just me - others may disagree. A few friends of mine have started up a musical group (with me being the drummer), something like a rock band. All we need is a bass player and we're all good.

I hope to learn a lot from these forums in the future!

how did you start drumming? I think this question should also include who or what influenced you to start but I will answer the question. I first started in 4th grade in concert band on snare alone (no kit). During 7th grade I got my first (present) drum set. I just loved. I never tried set before then but it changed my drumming life. 8th grade was last year of concert band. I am now Junior in High School that is in the Jazz program. I have been playing Jazz since Freshmen year. I mainly listen to metal but Jazz has opened my eyes to the drums and I love it. I was influenced by my best friend "Bones", thought he plays guitar. He is probably one of the few people who have helped me to continue playing and not letting me quit.

It all started in a food chair as a young baby. I always had rhythm, and I received my first Silver Star drumset at age 2, at age three, I received a Yamaha junior drumset. Once again at age 10 I receive a Synsonics Drumset. Then at age 16 I receive a Tama Swingstar Drumset. at last age 18, I bought my own Premier: Cabria Drumset. I really gained intrest in drums from watching the drummers in church. Afterward i started developing and practicing different styles, and expanding my limits in music and now I am a all around decent drummer.

Hi all,
Griff here.
No band atm. no kit atm. Not even sure if I will play live again, but saw this site & thought I'd say hello. So I've played on/off for 33 years. No expert as I'm self taught but the things I do seem to sound o.k. so can't be doing much wrong.

How I got started: Friend at the time says 'Let's start a band!' (Never happened) He gave up. I kept learning. 2yrs I was ready to join a band. My thanks eternally to Ian Paice for the drum tuition. (He didn't teach me for real, I just listened & copied his playing) Then learned a few things. Had good & bad GIGS over the years. The bad ones help you enjoy the good ones even more. I think I'm going to enjoy this site.

Thanks Guys Girls.

Griff.

Hi all,

I'm new here but not new to drumming. Started playing at 14 now 46. Played professionally for about 20 years till about age 36 and haven't played since.

Looking to getting back into playing just for a hobby this time and I believe it keeps
us somewhat fit.

Hmm, maybe when I get my confidence back I can look at doing a few gigs. All good fun.

Cheers,

Minskie

Started drumming with purpose about two weeks ago, around Christmas day when my son(9) received a drum kit from Santa. Honestly the kit is for my son!

I've not had any lessons to date, although my son goes to a neighbours house for lessons and i sometimes go with him and watch and take notes of the exercises!

Only time will tell if we both continue, at the moment it's something that i can do for 5minutes or 2 hours with relative ease depending on the time available. All my other hobbies (surfing, biking, photography) require that i commit more time to each and can prove to be awkward to fit into a very busy working and family life.

Top tip- If you have a wife., girlfriend or partner who might not see the appeal of drumming, buy a set of Silencer Pads, there great and they will keep your loved ones of your back not to mention the neighbours!

Happy Drumming!

Thanks for your reply Bernhard,
I'm not going to try and kid myself or anyone else that I know what does what I’m doing!

Last night I found myself going over the exercises my son had been given and trying new beats (only simple ones) for over 2 hours whilst my son played on his Playstation! It was great fun/exercise and was far better than watching the crappy soap operas on the TV.
Only when I got off the set could he get on!

I will admit to one thing, I have watched lots of drummers of all standards (mainly through this site) and I cannot get my head around the limb independence thing! I'm sure it will come but try as I might I cannot even strike a simple but independent beat without screwing it up after a few seconds.
I will crack it, the sooner the better!

No doubt I will find lots of hints and tips on here, and for that I thank everyone!

Happy Drumming!

I apologise if my terms aren't quite right but that’s another side to drumming I have yet to learn!

how did you start drumming? My brother has been playing for 7 years and I've always been into it. I knew I needed to start seriously playing myself when I would always sit there and tap beats that I made up with my feet and fingers in school and always get yelled at by teachers. Now, I can't help but hear a song and air drum to it. For the most part I've taught myself how to play. There is nothing like having an audience watching you and cheering for you because you blew them away with your drumming when you have a 7 year drummer for a brother standing there and he taught you nothing :)

Hello Drummerworld,
I'm a long time visitor to the forums, first time poster. First let me say thank you to everyone responsible for the creation and upkeep of DW. The amount of information you guys have compiled is amazing. DW is usually my first and last stop for most anything I'm looking to learn pertaining to drums. Now that that's out of the way, hi everyone else. I look forward to spending entirely too much time here on the forums.

real name? Brandon Smith
age? 17
how long been playing? Probably about 3 years
origin of user name? An old nickname
top 5 drummers? Eh...John Bonham, Steve Smith...Neil Peart...Dave Weckl and Carter Beauford in no particular order
make of drumkit? Tama
make of cymbal? 2002 Hats and a couple of HHX's
where do you practice? Anywhere I can bring a practice pad or move my hands or feet
are you in a band/s? Not other than the praise and worship band. Rural Alabama doesn't have much of a local music scene
covers or originals? Mostly covers. Every once and a while someone will break out something they wrote.
what style of music? The praise and worship band plays mostly Hillsong/Israel Houghton/something similar, while I have been known to play most anything I could figure out how to play.
favourite take out food? Steak-out
country? U.S.A.
one really odd fact about yourself? For the most part I'm socially retarded.
how did you start drumming? One summer when I was about 11, the band director called my house and asked if I wanted to play as they were short a couple of bass drummers. That started me into percussion in general but I didn't start playing set until I realized I was the worst guitar player out of my group of friends. We were trying to start a band for the school talent show when we realized we didn't have a drummer and since I did the marching percussion thing, I was the natural candidate for 'drummer'.

Hey guys,
I'm Ian, a 16 year old from High Point, North Carolina. I just started drumming around a month ago. I got a TAMA Stagestar. I'm still using the stock high hat, but they sent me a free Zildjian XBT 16" crash because the crash/ride that came with the kit was broken. Anyway, I'm just getting started and decided I should talk to some people who knew something about drums.

My favorite band is Mastodon (with my favorite drummer, Brann Dailor). My list of favorite drummers is as follows: Brann Dailor, Neil Peart, Phil Collins, and Dave Lombardo.

Anyways, just thought I'd make myself known!

Cheers,

Yay, Mastodon! I just picked up Blood Mountain and have been listening to it on my phone for the last week. I love it more every time I listen to it. I've been trying to relate their sound to other bands I like. Something like a mix of King Crimson, Clutch, and the Melvins for the most part. Sometimes I swear I'm listening to Zack Wylde, and then there's one song that reminds of Prong, and another song that has a small part that sounds like Fantomas. I think Leviathan is still my favorite album, but since I only have these two I need some more.

Get Remission, it's my favorite of theirs , I love all their music, though. Everything they did was excellent. I own their 4 albums and Remission was their first full length. I guess there are really 5 albums if you count Lifesblood, but buy Call of the Mastodon instead, it has all the tracks from Lifesblood on it plus a few of their really early songs.

Owdo, Paul Kellett here.

I'm 33, from Chorley, Lancashire, UK and have been drumming on and off for about 15 years, seriously for the last 4 or so years.

I currently play for the Preston band CopperBomb, playing a mix of metal/thrash stuff.

Due to a motorcycle accident 13 years ago, I have limited use of my left arm. This means I can no longer play an acoustic kit properly as I can't phisycally reach the drums with my left arm (my mates still remember me trying to do a monster solo and falling off my stool in an attempt to reach the floor toms!)

This means I now play a Yamaha DTXpress II e-kit with acoustic cymbals. It's programmed to be a heavy rock hit - good sharp attack on the snare, 4 beefy sounding toms and the hi-hat pedal programmed as a 2nd bass drum when stomped on as well as still allowing normal open/closed sound of the hat. I will be replacing all the rubber pads with Pintech mesh heads in the future as I don't like the feel of the rubber pads (plus, when I get carried away, I tend to be a bit heavy handed and keep snapping Ahead aluminium sticks! The local drum shop refer to me as "the yeti" because of this)

My influences include Dave Lombardo, Derek Roddy, Joey Jordisson, Tommy Lee, Trivium, Pink Floyd, Carcass (circa Swansong era) and some Napalm Death. My style focuses on heavy tom work with plenty of bass drum triplets thrown in.

I have never had lessons and have just picked up drumming by ear and class myself as kind of a "busking drummer" in that I find it much easier to sit with musicians and just play whatever feels right at the time than to play a specific laid-out beat if that makes any sense. I still have much to learn, but enjoy what I do immensely and now that I'm finally with a stable bunch of musicians, I am a lot happier in my playing.

Full Revs

Well hello to each and everyone of my fellow drummers.

My name is Anthony (Tony, Anton or The Drumbassador)
I have been playing drums now for the best part of my life now and it has now become my full time job now session drumming for bands and also fulltime drummer for my band KILLER ANGELS www.myspace.com/killerangels

Drumming to me is not a hobby its a way of life and would say to all you beginner drummers out there to just keep on going with the groves as it will pay off for you but its not an over night thing so patents and a cool head are required.BUT ONE THING I WOULD LIKE TO ADVISE NEW DRUMMERS IS........LISTEN TO MORE THAN JUST THE STYLE OF MUSIC THAT YOU LIKE AS IT MAKES A BETTER DRUMMER.
I hope that this little bit of my history may rub off onto some of you and make you think about being more passionate about your drumming and look forward to becomeing a regular on this drummers forum.

All the best to each and everyone of you and never give up on your dreams

Hi,

I'm new to this forum so I thought I'd introduce myself. I have actually been reading threads on this forum for a couple months but I never bothered to register. I think I can safely say that I've gotten twice as good as drumming as I was before I found this forum. I'm fifteen years old, I live in Westchester county in New York, and I've been drumming since I was in 3rd grade. Pleased to meet everyone.

In the box with the borrowed drumset was "Drum Techniques of Rush" I've been reading music since I was 5 and reallized very quickly that anyone that could play what was written there must be darn good. Been hooked ever since. Cheapie borrowed set -> Pearl Export -> 1970's Slinger kit -> Taye Studio Maple

One really odd fact about yourself? I quit my university studies to focus on drumming.
How did you start drumming? I air drummed and listened closely to drumming for several years. When I got to try a drum kit at the ripe age of 19, playing them seemed quite natural and, dare I say, easy. I had been playing the guitar for a couple of years at the time, but the instant I played my first beat I knew I had found my true love. I bought a six-piece kit with a double pedal and started fiddling with it a bit. Shortly I got to my senses and ditched the double pedal and two toms, and I ended up with a standard four piece. The drums were joined by a nice set of Zildjian A Customs and I was all set.

I attended a week-long music camp, and I took my first drum lessons there. The week was all about jazz comping, independence and reading music -- eight hours a day for six days gave me a very good kick start. It also got me listening to a lot of jazz and whatnot. I kept practicing for long hours even after the camp and attended a music school the following fall. I took lessons in drumming, theory, solfege, music history, piano and pretty much anything I could, and after a year I applied for and was accepted into a high-level music school. It's my second year here and I still have one to go. I'm playing in several bands and theater productions, plus I give drum lessons every now and then. It's been a heck of a ride and I'm excited to see where this road takes me...
