how did you start drumming? i graduated from piano and violin to drums somewhere around the 6th grade when i joined my middle school band. i was sick of playing those other instruments, but my parents wouldn't let me quit my music education so we compromised on an instrument that i thought would be fun for the rest of my life. i have also been involved in marching band and jazz band. the rest is history.

My first Post,Iam 38 Been out of the game for about 16 years...
Getting back.... I have been hitting the Pad hard fo about 6 months, Lots of rudiments. w/metronome
About an hour a day 5 days a week, No set as of yet, Planning on a TAMA Superstar.
I played from 7th grade in to College. Sold my set (Gretch) when I joined the military. God do I miss it.
I am big on singles, doubles, paradiddle, Swiss Tripplet, drags,
Plus I play around with the others...
I will have my kit in a month or so, cant wait to get back in the swing. I love big band...

How did you start drumming? My older brother brought home a Pearl 4-piece when I was 7. Little bro (righty) would play them whenever big bro (lefty) wasn't home. No problem, switch a few things around... but then big sis told big bro about little bro, and big bro solved the problem by buying a 13 piece Tama kit...little bro had to learn to play backwards. Learnt a lot from big bro though, and all the music he listned to. Never taken any lessons, it was pointless with a reversed kit, and my parents weren't about to shell out more money!

How will I reach my goals? Follow your practise routine to the best of your ability, if a day slides, no biggy, get back on track. I'll have to accept

that some days, I won't get there, but, I will get right back on track, and get practising. Don't wast time, doing nothing, specially on the computer,

and stuff like that. Wake up early and get that extra practise time! Stop goofing around on the computer! Do your homework right away and fast,

than drum till you die! Get things done, get practising, go pro!

Joe Porter, you seem very dedicated and ambitious. However, that strict of a schedule would cause a most definite burn out for me. At one point it actually did. So (after a long, lacadaisical, self-pitying 3 weeks) I torn down all my stupid schedules and plans and said, Im playing for now and the present moment and Ive been a happier drummer ever since. Im not saying that youll burn out or even that schedules are bad, just watch out for that becuz its a rough phase.

how did you start drumming: Started snare in the elementary school band. In middle school, our band director was looking for people to play drum set (all the previous drummers had moved up to high school) so I started taking lessons and joined. Hmm... wow JoePorter. That's a pretty strict plan there--something I would never do--but to each their own.

I drum simply because I love it. However, making some huge plan like that and forcing myself to do it would actually tear me away from drumming. The reason I don't do such practices is because I just wouldn't enjoy them. I don't drum to get better, I drum because it's something I love to do.

Anyway my biggest influence is bozzio. pretty common answer for favorite drummer but after you hear the chamber works cd you will know why he is one of the greatest ever. Hello fellow drummers! I'm Phil from West Midlands, England. I started drumming at age 12, had a number of lessons but soon got bored and did my own thing. After being in a number of bands I stopped playing at age 18 when I moved away to University. I picked the sticks up again at 28 when I moved back to my home town and got back in a couple of bands.

Suffice to say that I am paying the price for being undisciplined in my younger years and also from taking a break from the instrument during my 20s. I'm 31 now and am back up to a reasonable standard but I'm determined to raise my game. I started having lessons again last year and am practicing as much as time alows (usually an hour each weekday and more on weekends). Am currently working on some latin beats to 'add to my sound pallet' which is cool.

Equipment wise, for practice I'm using a Yamaha DTXpress electic kit with Roland V-Drum mesh head as a snare and I have an old Tama Swingstar which I recently dragged out of retirement.

My main kit is a Yamaha Beech Custom in Candy Apple Red with a Yamaha Bamboo Custom snare, Kildjian K/Z 13" hats, K Dark Custom 15" and 16" crashes and a Paiste 20" Signature Dry Heavy Ride which is ace! I've recently added some Stagg splash cymbals and chinas which are surprisingly good for the money.

Inspired through the local Drumcorps, Didn't really wanted to be a part of the corps (stupid I know), but just wanted to hitt the drums. My dad is handy, and made me a drumkit out of an old chaireframe in combo with turned over bukkets (needet a lot, got them from a baker). That's how is started. One really odd fact about yourself?
My only experience with drums is playing one song live in front of a about a thousand people. I was watching friends play a local club and the drummer quit before the last song, threw me his sticks, and told me to play something. I got up and banged out something horrible which the band turned into a cover of Radiohead's Creep. I think 20 people came up to me and told me I rocked. They were drunk.

Well, why not tell people something about myself... Since I'll be around on this forum people might wanna know a thing or two about me.
My real name is Philip, I am 20 years old at the moment. I've been playing since I was ten.
My user name was first conceived when I decided to join the Flexbeta.net forum. It's because I'm really tall, 2m or 6' 6". I look very strong, and even intimidating for some people, but I'm actually a very nice guy, I never really get violent. Except when I play drums, which brings me to my top 5 drummer list: Mike Portnoy, Virgil Donati, Michael Thomas (Bullet for my Valentine), Steve Gadd, Jukka Nevalainen (Nightwish). I own a Tama Swingstar, and for some reason I'm a big Tama fan. It doesn't really make any sense, since I also like the sound of Pearl drums, or whatever brand actually. And I really don't have a preference for a cymbal brand, I have Sabians, Stagg, Paiste, Meinl and Pearl, and I like them all, each for their specific function.
I also have a Roland TD6, which I use in my room in Enschede, the Netherlands. I live in an apartment building near the Twente University campus, and my neighbours arent tolerant... I can practise on the TD6 pretty well but I like my accoustic set more since it's more versatile, bigger and louder. I am in a Christian band, we play mostly covers, but also some of our own writing. The band style is pop/rock, my style is kinda heavy so that gives us a pretty unique sound.
My favourite take-out food is Chinese.

how did you start drumming?

To answer this question, I'll start back in 6th grade. We had to take these little "hearing" tests to see if we were "inclined" towards musical instruments. I wanted to play the drums. I got to learn the trumpet for about a year. I had just gotten braces and it was painful to even play trumpet. Fast forward a few years and I saw a high school friend playing and he was amazing. fast forward a couple more years and I saw a clip of D.J. Bonebrake tapping out three different timings - his foot doing 4/4, his hand tapping out 3/4 and he added another timing to his other hand and it just blew my mind.

Fast forward a couple more years, 28 now, and I found a band who I want to put out a CD for. Their biggest problem? No drummers! Not that there are no drummers but very few that have the skill they are looking for. So as I'm getting into putting out a CD for this band, I'm thinking, I can still do this - I can afford a set and some lessons, why not? What sealed the deal was getting to talk and see a drummer named John from Chicago who was filling in for Gene of Evil Bever while Gene was on tour with the Eagles of Death Metal. I talked to John a bit and he didn't look at me like I was crazy for wanting to pick it up so "late" in life (although I see there are people who have started later!). We talked about some different drum sets and he just said "man, you should do it." It was his enthusiasm and just the enjoyment he got out of playing that has inspired me so far.

My name is Kristin. I'm 28 and have been taking lessons for the last 7 months or so. I've wanted to play the drums my entire life...but for some reason I waited until got married and had three kids (ages 5, 3, and 1) to start! It has been the best thing for me...I absolutely LOVE it!

My husband is extremely supportive and bought me the coolest Valentines gift ever! He bought me a Mapex Pro M kit! (very romantic!) I admit to having a pretty sweet setup for being so new at this...but I promised him (and myself) that I would do it justice eventually. I have all Sabian cymbals...mostly AAX and some AA's. I have two crashes, a splash, and a china boy...and of course the hats and ride:).

I am fortunate to be able to play in my church...so I get to play live every week. It is challenging because of the different types of music that we play. We are fairly contemporary...but there are times when I find it very difficult to play. All in all I think its great practice though and I definitely get to play a wide range of styles.

I love all types of music and have a great time in my basement trying to play along with everything. Right now one of my favorites to play with is Evanescence....not that I sound anything like that guy but I can try right?!

Why I started playing: Well, well, well. Before I started playing the drums, I was always hitting things when listening to music. I mean I was always trying to find the beat, and jump with it or shake my head with it. Around 3-4 years ago, I started being interested in the drums. I would look at a band, and then unconciously start staring at the drummer, and what he was doing... so around 2 years ago, I started taking lessons, and I'm progressing quite fast. My teachers tells me I got a good ear, and I better than people at my level... I guess thats a good thing. lol... I'll probably never stop playing the drums though. how did you start drumming? my dad sold his first edition 86' mazda rx7, with some of the left over money he bought my sister a drum kit, I had been playing bass for awhile, and a couple months later my sister dropped the drums and at that same time we had kicked our drummer out of the band I was currently in so I actually used all of my savings bonds for college and bought everything else I needed for them (with my parents approval of course..hah) and started playing.
