Hey to all :)

I'm Blackfyre, I live in the UK.

I took up drums in January 2004 when my band's drummer walked out, I'm completely self taught as a result.

Influences include: Daniel / Adrian Erlandsson, Peter Wildoer, Joey Jordison, Neil Peart, Mike Portnoy, "Moose" Thomas, Tommy Portimo, Tommy Lee (we share the same birthday too) and probably a thousand others I can't think of right now.

Any other questions, do feel free to drop me a line.

hey

I’m new around in this site (was referred to it from someone down the pub)

well my names Dave, I’m 18 and i come from Doncaster which is in the south Yorkshire region of England... I’ve been playing drums for 6 or 7 years and I attended the access to music course in York when i was 16 and i am now currently studying music at degree level in Hull Uni.

I’ve done a little teaching and session work and have been in a few bands... my preference on music is heavy/classic/hard rock, funk, Latin and reggae music...

I’ve gig around the York area and in the Doncaster area and had a few rare times playing in London in Camden

Hi Guys,

I just wanted to introduce myself and say thanks to all of the knowledgeable and frequent posters on this site. I love the tone of cooperation and helpfullness.

I've been playing bass intensely since 99 with a stint on drums for about 3 years in the early 80s. It's a long story, but I've decided, at the age of 44, to re-dedicate myself to drums. I've been playing again for about 7 months and seem to be gaining fast.

I've been using my buddy's DDrum 4 kit and liking it for the most part, but I've got the serious Jones for REAL drums. I played an acoustic kit for the first time in 24 years at Guitar center about a month ago....it's been a blur of Sonor catalogs and web sites since then!!!

I just added a set of 14" New Beat HH to the DDrum kit and gave it a big jump in useability. I was getting sloppy with the timing of my HH closes. Real cymbals sure brought that into sharp focus in a hurry.

I've got Stick Control, Sycopation, and The New Breed. Whooooohoo!!

I learned using match grip and recently switched to traditional. That's coming quickly as well. I like the feel it gives me on snare accents during grooves.

The cool thing about this is that as a Bassist, I was always frustrated with drummers. I was so tempted to kick them off the kit and show them how to play it the way I felt it!!! I've finally succumbed to the temptation. I couldn't train them, so I joined them!

Coming from a bass perspective really helps my groove as well.

But, I run on....Thanks for all the great info.

Hey im ryan i have been playing for about 6 years i play every thing like rock, jazz, shuffle, swing and bossa nova, but i really like progressive rock and thats what one of my bands play.
my kit is just a crappy power beat, but believe it or not it sounds pretty good, i even had a guy come up to me once and say that my $50 power beat snare sounded better than his $600 pearl maple free floater, but i have spent a lot of money on it and now it is worth over $2,200au. i am looking at selling it bit by bit or if some one wants the whole kit i will sell it for $1,500au, and buy a Tama.
The kit is a standard 5 piece
All Dixon double braced heavy duty stands
10" sabian pro sonix splash
12" paiste 502 splash
16" paiste 402 crash
16" paiste 302 crash
16" headliner crash
16" schallock crash
20" schallock ride
20" sabian pro sonix ride
14" schallock hats
14" headliner hats (the headliners come with the kit when i bought it)
DXP double kick pedals
All remo heads
Pearl clamp and arm
2 DXP clamps
DXP boom arm
DXP boom stand double braced

Hello everyone,

I have been drumming using single snare work for about 1-2 years and then moved to a kit after that and have been doing that for 3-4 years now. I am now 14, I began when I was 9-10 years old being personally trained. I recently moved away to another state and haven't played the drums in a few months. I don't have a lot of space right now to set-up my kit, but I am looking forward to. Last stuff I did was some advanced swing beats in "The Art of Bop Drumming" by John Riley.

Hopefully signing up I will learn a lot more and soon to get back into drumming.

One good fact about me: I can build the kit i want
How did you start: In high school. Played clarinet in grade school (6th grade) and didnt like it so i took up drums (sophmore year) along with choir.

About to start a new kit. Sold my last one. Single kick 20 x 20(lot of thunder from that one), 14 suspended floor, 6, 8, 10, 13 racks and a 14 x 8 snare (great throaty bottom end, sound fills the room). Rolled the shells from italian poplar (12 ply). Nice sounding kit.

Next one will be a beast though, 14 x 8 snare, 10x9, 12x10, 13x11, 14x12 racks, 18x16 floor and ...... two 28x28 kicks. Also will be rolled from italian poplar and covered with either sheet brass or bronze. Should be a sweet kit. I'll keep you posted. Ciao, Rich the builder

The website is awesome by the way.

Age? Over 21

How long have you been playing? Since December 2005

Origin of user name? I tried to come up with a "female-sounding" name!

Top 5 drummers? Ginger Baker, John Bonham, Chris Layton, Kenny Aronoff, Steve Gadd

Make of drumkit? Wellllll, right now I am learning to play on a used Yamaha 7 pad digital drum! It's a real hoot (did I really say hoot?!)... has kick and hi-hat "pedals." I'm saving my pennies for an acoustic set. I'm so glad I didn't go out and get a really cheap kit at the beginning. I am now doing my research so I can find the right set for me. So far I'm having lots of fun learning to play. As for the research, I'm going around in circles! Hoping to get help from ya'll later.

Where do you practice? Living room, so I can play along with drum lessons on the tv.

What style of music? I enjoy a little bit of everything, but classic rock and a bit of blues are the best. I enjoy music from the following bands: Cream, CCR, Doors, Eagles, Neil Young, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix, Van Morrison, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Led Zeppelin, Jeff Healey, Heart, Mary Chapin-Carpenter, Norah Jones... and lots more.

Country? USA

One really odd fact about yourself? I'm the Miss America of Odd.

How did you start drumming? I decided I'd be good at it and wanted to do it! I don't know if I will be really good someday, but I sure plan to have fun! Seriously, I do hope to become a skilled drummer... but I'm trying not to pressure myself into being perfect (and getting frustrated along the way). I can be too perfectionistic sometimes, but perfectionism and fun don't hardly mix together so well, sooooo I am trying to make sure I am having fun first, and trying to leave the pressure of perfectionism behind. I don't know if I explained that very well.

So, anywho, I've lurked here for awhile and decided to join. I think I'm addicted to this place! I'm enjoying reading as much as I can here.

Hello, all. I'm new here and I figured this would be the most appropriate place for my first post. I have just recently purchased an awesome set of drums (the first set I have owned since 1986) and returned to my first musical love after many years as a bassist.
I stumbled upon this site while researching brands of drums and cymbals in anticipation of getting back into drumming. I have since spent several hours here reading up on great drummers and reading as many posts in the forums as possible before jumping in myself.
The drum set I sold in 1986 was a standard 5 piece set of Rogers (Big R) with all Zildjian cymbals. It was not the set I wanted at the time... just the set I had (local musician sold it to me complete for $500.00, cymbals and all). I was determined to get a set that I would be inspired to play the second time around, yet I still didn't want to spend a mint doing it. What I decided on was the Mapex Pro M series: Beautiful, all maple drums with top notch hardware and a price tag I could live with. I went with an ALMOST Bonham set-up: 24x16 bass (Bonham's was 26x14), 14x10 mounted tom, 16x16 and 18x16 floor toms. The snare is different, too: matching maple-shelled 14x8. I have absolutely no cymbals yet, but that is a good thing in a way: I will be forced to work on the basics and learn to tune the drums well before being distracted by all that shiny bronze! I'll be making a trip to Atlanta Pro Percussion to begin assembling my cymbal set up soon. Hats and a ride are the first objectives.

I look forward to learning from you guys. I started to go with 'Rusty' as my user name, but 'rusty' doesn't even begin to describe my drumming at present. I look at my situation as a chance to start over... I've had several years to forget all the sloppy technique that was my trademark as a teenager. Now I can learn to do it right.

make of drumkit? Mapex Pro M
make of cymbal? none as of yet
where do you practice? Heaven... Well, a one bedroom apartment above my detached garage on a sparsely inhabited road... so yeah... heaven!

covers or originals? we'll likely do covers and improv/jams
what style of music? most likely, classic rock/rock/blues/80's metal/grunge...
favourite take out food? Chinese

I jam with freinds once in a while, but I'm really looking for a commited band to join up with. My kit is a Pearl export series, sessions studio snare, and Zildjians. I might be the oldest student here. I've been taking lessons for two years now and I started when I was 58. I thought about it when I was 18 but my parents were not very supportive, and after that I got involved in putting myself through college, then fooling around with cars, then flying. My wife was the one to suggest it, which was a big surprise, and then it occurred to me that the chance may never come again.

I am trying to learn jazz and big band. It is much more difficult than I expected. My kit is a Yamaha Stage Custom Advantage. Everything is really muffled so as to avoid disturbing the neighbors.

Morning everyone. I'm new to this site as well. I'm from Peterborough Ontario Canada, I originally started playing at 14 on a cheap set of Pizie's befor gratuating to a set of Stewarts. I stopped playing at 22 when I got married and started having a family. Now at 52 I started learning again on a set of Pearls EXR. Getting aquainted with them is one thing....getting the timing back will be like riding a bike again.

Hey Derek...Wow..hahaha. I used to live in Jensen Beach. On the island. I was born in Stuart.

Now we live on North Hutchinson Island.....right by North Jetty. Yes...I am a surfer...thats why I live up here. I know TONS of people from Jensen Beach! Very small world.

You say you have been playing for 9 years? Did you take lessons for awhile? Do you know any of the members of the bands..."Last Laugh"...Fifty Dollar Flander"..."Waterbird (they broke up.)"

Do you know any of the Banfi's? Dave or Steve. They are some great musicians in Stuart. Wow...I could go on and on. Did you used to play gigs at the open mic night at the Lyric Theater?

Welcome Eddie, this is a great site for sharing. And if you want info on the Sonor 3003 make sure you do a search before posting because chances are the question has already been asked and answered. There is alot of information on the Sonor 3003's here. I just bought my white sparkle 3003 in december and love it. I am new to drums but have learned alot since coming here so feel free to message me any questions and I may be able to help or atleast point you to someone who can. Make sure you post your pics when you get the set in there is always room for more pics of the Sonor's.

Greetings,

What a great site. A drummer for a number of years now I wish I had found this place earlier, but better late than never. I am very impressed with the number of really talented people here and with the mix of styles, skill level, tastes, and experience that you all have allowed to represent your site.

I am 34, been playing for almost 20 years but only about 15 on set. Before that it was band, band, and more band. The good thing is that I learned how to read music and how to really work the basics of drumming. Rudiments were taught often and although I did not always like it (as I had visions of playing a very large set for Ozzy) it did pay off.

As a set player I have been massively influenced by Tommy Aldridge. Being a huge Ozzy fan for other reasons (Randy Rhodes) I always loved the way Tommy played and tried very hard to emulate his style. I love the way he chokes cymbals, uses dbl kick tastefully and works his solos. His triplets are fun to learn as well. I imagine that today a lot of people might feel as though time has passed Tommy by, but I think it fair to say that he is a solid student of the drums and someone who represented the best of what solid rock drumming is about.

As for other drummers, well, there really are not many I don't like and respect, providing they are solid in one area. Time. I have played with and met, jammed with and been friends with drummers who have insane speed and insane chops but could not keep time. Session drummers, the drumers you never really pay attention to on commercials or the guys out there on tour with simple bubble-gum pop acts, they can all be considered master "metronome" players. Most of them at least.

I am not a huge fan of massive sets unless and until I have become comfortable with something smaller. Keith Moon, Buddy Rich, and others have proven over and over again that a five piece (or so) can be used to produce a great legacy in the art of drumming.

Currently (and do to a number of factors) I am using E-drums. I know, I know, they are not as good as acoustic. True, but they have come a long way. Especially with the mesh heads they are now making. The feel is pretty good. The key is, they have advanced a great deal from the hard rubber junk that they used to make. Anyway, I enjoy them.

So, it is good to be here. I look forward to learning a lot from most of you and perhaps sharing a few things with others.

Thanks for being here.

Best,
Isaacs

Welcome Issacs! I'm an e-kit player too! Roland TD-8 with mesh for snare and bass, rubber pads for all else. I have an acoustic too but have been on the ekit due to living arrangements, etc the past 10-12 years or so. It takes some getting used to the rebound on acoustics but it's nice to jam out anytime I want on the ekit without bothering anyone.

Anyways, glad you found DW...enjoy!

WK,

Thanks. I had a chance (don't know if you saw my reply) to view your solo work that you posted here. Nice work and I really like the sound you are getting from your Rolands. Can you tell me a little about your set up. I am going with HART (Studio Pro) and it is a good sounding kit. HART are not the most expensive e-drums but since they were my first kit I did not want to gamble too much. I am sure that I will modify and tweak it as I go. I stay away from the rather odd voices that the module allows in that I really try to keep it sounding as much like an acoustic set as possible. I have not given up on acoustic drums at all but in my present situation they seem to allow me a lot more time to play.

In any case, thanks for the welcome and if you have a chance to let me know what you are using that would be helpful.

Best,
Isaacs

Hola all. Decided i'd post here to formerly introduce myself. I've been playing for probably about two months now, but moreso since I got my first set this past month (Pearl Forums). Some of you may have already seen me posting in the drum technique forum. I've fallen in love with the drums, and can't stop playing every chance I get. I'm just getting started, and trying to work on some good technique before I develop some bad habits. I've had some friends help me get started along the way, but i'm currently in the progress of getting a left handed teacher to really help me get the fundamentals down. I play with a completely left handed setup, because that's how I started, and that's what I feel most comfortable with. I stumbled on to this forum by, well, looking for drumming forums, a community where I could seek a bit of help/advice and so on. The forums seem pretty nice and i'll be sticking around as long as I can =)

A little about me, i'm 16, slaving through my junior year of high school, just another teenager trying to survive ;) -- Located in Northern Cali!

And I thought i'd just post this here instead of the other picture thread. My set may not be as *impressive* as the rest of you, but hey, everyone's got to start somewhere. Ignore the screaming face however, i'm telling the guitarist to "quiet down" :P

Hey everybody,

My name is Roo (formally Andrew) and I live in Fredericton, New Brunswick. I grew up in England, and moved back and forth between Canada and the Middle East, and now I've buried my roots here in in Canada. My first experience with playing a drumset was during a sporting event in the Middle East (specifically the country Qatar) where my school had a trip to nearby country Bahrain to compete with another school. Well, as luck had it, my host who I stayed with (along with another friend called Tom) had a drumset in his room. This guy I was staying with gets up on his set and just goes nuts and its like 11 O'clock at night and I was just mesmerized. He then went on to play the good ol' basic beat that all set players first learn to play.

As this guy I was staying with got off his set, i thought I would give it a whirl. Just like that I played exactly what he had just played with no mistakes, right up to speed. I didn't consider it a big deal until my friend Tom tried afterwards and he couldn't get close. It suddenly hit me that this was something I could try and persue as a hobby when I got home. I immediately raised all the money I had (forcing my brother to pay back some loans :P ) and bought an Indonesian-made "Lazer" 5-piece drumkit. From then on I practiced whenever I possibly could, and started picking up ideas from music and other drummers. As I started progressing, another drummer moved to my community who was quite a bit better than me, which inspired me to start progressing more and more. I started getting involved with jamming with music teachers and participating in productions.

Upon moving back to Canada, I joined my middle-school "Intermediate Concert Band" and got my start at playing classical music. Since then I have considered drumming a really big part of my life, and have progressed greatly since I was 12 years old thanks to my drum teacher Karl Ganz.

I am now 15 years of age (as I post this) and I am the Head Percussionist for my High School Senior Concert Band, Jazz Band drummer, and Musical Drummer/Percussionist. I thrive on meeting and sharing ideas with other drummers. I had a chance to attend a Kenny Arnoff clinic in mid 2005 and got to talk with him afterwards and got autographs. I wish I would have asked him more questions, as since then I have learned crazy amounts about him.

My favourite drummers as of this moment would include Kenny Aronoff, Dennis Chambers, Gregg Bissonette, Buddy Rich, Ringo, John Dolmayan, and Mike Portnoy. I play with a young blues band (me being the youngest) and we are starting to get noticed and will hopefully play in the 2006 Harvest Jazz and Blues Festival. I have very high hopes of being able to one day turn proffessional, with plans to earn a degree in classical percussion after high school.

I am very happy to finally register at the forums here, as I have been completely addicted to Drummerworld for a long time and have spent huge amounts of hours taking in the masses of content here. I hope to become a very active member of this community. Thanks

Hey, I just registered. My real name is "Valentin Buss", I'm 17 years old and live in Frankfrut am Main (Germany). My Username refers to an odd fact about myself ;-) I have really wierd hair, red, curly and it grows to an Afro if you just leave it alone.
I started drumming about three years ago, I just wanted to learn something cool instead of just wasting time so I told my mom "I want to have drumming lessons and if I won't want them anymore in a week, FORCE ME!". It took some time until she organized drumming lessons and by then she really had to force me to go there, but with the time I started to love it and now I'm so happy that I haven't quit my lessons (although I wanted to). I still play pretty old equipment, I think my parents bought the drumset from 2nd hand when my brother started drumming (10-15 years ago, he didn't play long). It was pretty standard by that time, after a year I got a new Hi-Hat-Machine, a Crash-Cymbal (only had a ride by Pearl before) and a bassdrum-pedal. This christmas I got a Yamaha DFP-9310, it totally rocks and when I become 18 this year, I'll get myself a whole new drumset (any recommandations between 500 and 1000 €?).
My cool neighbours allow me to practice at home. I play in 2 bands and in our school big band now, it's a lot of fun but nothing really serious. As you can see my musical interest isn't limited to one special style. Still most of the music I head (from Jazz to Powermetal) is pretty uptempo and I think when I play my grooves I drive too much, but hey, everybody has his problems.

Make of drumkit: Tama, Yamaha, Pearl
Make of cymbal: Zildjian and Sabian
Where do you practice: My room, school, church...Anywhere I possibly can.

What style of music: Everything, I love it all and love to play it all, but if I had a preference, I would say contemporary rock.
Favourite take out food: Pizza of course
Country: United State
One really odd fact about yourself: Ummmm...I have a strong obsession with cow bells!
How did you start drumming: Well...music has always been apart of me, I moved from piano, to bass, then finally on to drums, where I have seemed to stay so far. I learned drums from a close family friend named Adam Shendal http://stevenleegroup.com/aboutslg_adam.htm

I swear Adam was born with drum sticks in his hand. It's kinda cool because he grew up with Buddy Rich, when I go into his house I see all the pictures of Buddy and him, truly inspiring. I think of Adam Shendal to be my own personal Buddy Rich. So anyways, one day, I told Adam I was interested in playing, we met one night and talked about it all. I was told that I picked up the drums quick, and that I have a natural time, hopefully that's true. :P

So I'm still practicing, always trying to get better. I plan a career in music, so I figure I better get ahead of the game.

how did you start drumming? I would have started when I was 9 when I told my mom I wanted to. she thought all boys wanted to play drums for no reason so she sent me to piano lessons and clarinet lessons. not till I after a year of playing drums at church, self-taught, did she start paying for drum lessons at age 14.
how I got my start was... one day after church, I was goofing around on the drums in the back room. the youth pastor heard me playing and told me that I was going to play that sunday. I've been playing every sunday since...
so i'm 4 years behind where my ability could be but i think im catchin' up! my mom still apologizes to me once in a while.
