Heyas all! I'm Dan from Southern Oregon.

I played drums back in high school, and took a 25 year (yes you read it right) break. Things are mellowing out somewhat now in life, and I'm getting back to a kit before I die.

I've told myself every year since I turned 24-25 that I need to get back to beating the skins, but - as life goes, here I am at 41. Its about time to get back on a throne.

I ordered up a pretty decent entry level setup this evening, and I'll get some pictures up when I'm sitting behind it.

Just wanted to say hi, and hope to make a few friends while I'm here!

Welcome to the forum and great decision to get back behind a kit. Like my Grandfather used to say "if you don't use the talent God gave you, He'll give it to someone else". Well, I'm not sure how things work but I sure didn't want to give up on playing this most wonderful instrument. Congrats on the new kit also.

favourite take out food: Weird. Um, Del Taco I guess.

how did you start drumming: I've wanted to drum since I was a little kid. I joined the school band in sixth grade but I was super shy and the band teacher insisted on doing boys and against girls all the time and as the only girl drummer that made me feel to on the spot...so I dropped it. I'd been waiting till I had space for a drumset all this time since and finally got it, got my set a month ago, 11 or so years later, and now here I am...

I'm trying to start a blog and to continue to put up blog posts for students to check out, or to entice new students to sign up.

I made (what I feel is a pretty good first post about groove), although I could stew over it for days picking up bits and pieces (like I normally would), I feel the time spent making it better is just getting exponentially large for the reward.

Please check it out and let me know what you think from a drummers perspective, and educators, a business persons, and so on cheers.

Haha, "a preposition is a bad thing to end a sentence with." I'm sure you realize this and were making a joke, but "with" is a preposition :D

Yep I noticed that too at times. I couldn't replicate it this morning though. Now that I have a blog, and new content I'll be redesigning my website.

If any one wants, subscribe to my blog, and you will see any new content... For most people here I'm sure its similar stuff to that which you already know. I'll be putting a mix between beginner topics and advanced stuff (more specifcally based around what I know; blues, roots drumming).

Any comments on the content of the blog itself would be great, and any advice from people with suggestions on how to do this better is appreciated.

Hi Russell. Welcome to DW. Always room for another Aussie brother. Very nice Blues! Nice feel, great sounding singer, no Rock fills or fills after every bar thank God. The fills you did fit well within the genre. Good sounding recording, too. I like the harmonica player, I like it all. I'm a certified, card carrying, dues paying, Blues nut too. Very appropriate drumming on your part, I'm glad because if it wasn't I'd have to say something lol.

Hey now!

I used to play way back when and am looking to get into it again. Trying to piece together an as close to identical as possible Dave Grohl Nirvana kit (Black AS2 with natural superstar snare). Man it is not easy finding vintage drums in those sizes! Any way you can tell who my earliest influence was and the style I play. Never played with a band just jammed in my house.

I'm Dan, I'm 25 years of age and I'm a novice drummer in New Jersey, USA.

I started in 3rd grade with a Ludwig snare and then practiced rarely until I turned 16 and had become interested in rock.
I got a job then just to buy instruments. Saved up and got the kit which I'm still using today and my first guitar.
Now I love all kinds of music, jazz, rock, funk, metal, blues, doo wop, Rock'n'roll, swing, soul, 'world', 'latin', post-rock, math rock, you name it, I'll check it out.

Kit:
Pearl Export, 'Smoke Gray' (I believe that's what they were calling the sparkling green-grey wrap I ended up with)

Toms:
10"
12"
13"
16" Floor

22" Bass

Tama Iron Cobra PowerGlide Single Kick Pedal

Cymbals:
Unidentified Sabian 20" Ride,
Sabian B8 20" Ride,
Sabian 16" Pro Sonix crash
Sabian B8 hit hats
Avedis Zildjian 16" medium thin crash
Wuhan 10" splash.

Somehow I've accumulated five different snare drums:
The Ludwig I started on, Two pearl snares, a Yamaha and an unknown chrome 'mutt' snare.
All the standard 14"? diameter but a few different depths.

I'm looking to pick up an 18" floor tom to tune to the bass drum and some decent cymbals in the near future.
My B8's stink.. Thinking of getting some 14" new beats for the hihat.
If anyone has recommendations, feel free to message me.
I also want to get the hardware to mount a closed hihat on the right hand side.
I've got a ride on each side, going to have a floor tom on each side, and hopefully hats on both sides.

I'm always interested in learning more techniques. I'm still working on shoring up the basics. I'm not currently interested in becoming a double bass pedal player, hence the desire to adopt the 18" floor tom. Trying to be able to lead with either hand and play equally well.

Books I'm working with include:
Gary Chester's New Breed
Modern Rudimental Swing Solos by Charley Wilcoxon
Syncopation for the modern drummer by Ted Reed
Joel Rothman's Jazz Drum Book.

Book recommendations are welcome too.

I studied for a year or a year and a half under Bob Boyd.

I also enjoy playing a Meinl Cajon.

Thanks for the excellent wealth of a resource that is this forum.

Hi - I'm Javier from Miami and I've been playing drums close to 30 years. Last year, I tore up my arm in a cycling accident and the kit went in the closet. But I pulled it out last week and I'm giving it another try.

Background and influences are 1980s mostly: Kenney Jones, Keith Moon, Terry Bozzio and Simon Phillips but with a rebuilt arm/elbow, sounds like we're going to be playing more R&B/jazz and giving up on the over-the-top arena rock fills. I can't wait. Glad to be here.

I play a 1990 Tama Rockstar. We'll see if that works for these new genres...

Hey all, a little late getting to this introduction thread, anyway, here it is.

Jim Mattingly, I like long walks on the beach, sunsets, reading by candlelight...Ohh, not the right website, ha ha...

Jim Mattingly, 49 yrs. young. Been playing drums/percussion on and off for 30 plus years. Claim to fame would be opening up for the Gregg Allman band when I was 17 years old and opening up for an east coast big name band called Root Boy Slim & The Sex Change Band in College Park, MD...Gave up the rock star aspirations when I went into the Navy for 8 years in 79. Still love playing and will literally keep playing until I am physically unable to do so.
Currently my drum kit of choice for about the past 4 years is a SONOR S-Classix kit, racked. Up until recently I have used nothing but Zildjian cymbals, however, I am awaiting delivery of 3 UFIP cymbals, a 20" Rough Ride, 18" Rough Crash and a 18" Natural China.
I use a combination of Shure and Audix mics, a combination of Pearl and Gibralter hardware. A DW 9000 single kick pedal or a Pearl Eliminator double kick. A DW 9000 Remote Hi Hat stand or a Pearl Eliminator HH stand.
I prefer to play Modern/Smoothe jazz stylings for my own pleasure but tend to be in classic rock and blues bands for giggin out, the demand for jazz is just not in the Grand Rapids, MI. areas. I am originally from the Washington, D.C area where the tastes and music styles are much more diverse.
My favorite drummers are numerous but if I had to pick 5 they would be as follows, but not necessarily in the order listed. Lenny White, Gavin Harrison, Richie Hayward, Buddy Rich, Tony WIlliams...
I have been involved with quite a few other drummer/drumming forums but really like this site quite a bit.

keep it simple

Hi,

my name is Karsten, I am from Germany. I play drums for about 1,5 years and started teaching myself with DTXplorer, now I bought DTX550k. I always dreamed of my own drum, but got my first drum with mid-30.

I like the Drummer World a lot and often watch videos and bios from famous drummers.

Take care and keep on drumming!

What up fellow drummers! I've been on this forum for a while now and I realized I never formally introduced myself!

My name is Sam and I'm from St. Louis, Missouri. I started drumming when I was 7. It was an "on and off" sorta thing until I was about 13 and since then I haven't looked back. I may not be the best, but it doesn't matter to me because I only play for fun.

I'm in a band called Stay For Her (I hate the name but I don't care as long as were somewhat decent). We basically formed in the studio when I was asked to lay down some drums and our current vocalist was asked to sing. We decided to stick around and now were making songs a million times better than before. In fact we just recorded a few new tracks that have to be mixed and mastered still, but should be out soon. If you want to hear our old sh*tty stuff go to myspace.com/stayforher. Again, the new tracks will be up in a few weeks :)

I also do some drum covers on my own time if you wanna check them out. You can obviously see how I've progressed through the years, which is an exciting thing to see for me especially. Link to my youtube channel:

Hi Guys!,
New to the forum, and to drumming, I stumbled across this website a while ago and it seems really good with a very active forum full of new and experienced drummers to chat to and share hints and tips with. I am teaching myself at the minute but hope to start professional tuition soon - there's only so much you can learn from a book and DVD's!
I have posted several videos on YouTube of my drum covers to chart my progression and get some feedback tips from the more experienced drummers out there. I'll post some on the relevant forum in due course.

Looking forward to chatting with you all!

Hello Fellas, and ladies if there are any out there.

I am new to the thread, and I am excited about how much this thread is used. I have already seen tons of great info on here!

I have been playing drums for about 14 years and live in Alabama. My wife is pregnant and will be having her baby any day.

I also have a custom drum company called HD Custom Drums. Check us out when you have a chance. www.HDcustomdrums.com (http://www.hdcustomdrums.com)We are fairly new on the market, but we are getting great feedback about out drums and we are working on building up our artist roster.

Top 5 Drummers: Benny Grebb for sure, Dave Weckle, JoJo, JR Robinson, Alfred Sergel (this guy is unknown, but is so sick)

I don't know how everyone else managed to have the same questions to answer, and I don't feel like manually typing them all out. So I will stop where I am.

Looking forward to getting to know some of you guys! Peace http://profile.ak.fbcdn.net/hprofile-ak-snc4/187487_100002167306868_645475_n.jpg

what style of music - Metal to funk, give most things a try.

one really odd fact about yourself - played my one and only gig where The Jam, The Vapors and other New Wave luminaries played.
how did you start drumming - knitting needles on pillows, some would say there's been no improvement!

When I first started it seemed so easy (relatively), now starting up again it seems so tough, kit set up, layout, cymbal voices and all the other scientific aspects that keep popping up, all from something you just hit!

Happy to have found this community, nice to see plenty of respect and advice, and refreshingly no flaming, bashing and trolling.

-Main Snare's a Ludwig Acrolite 14x5. Looks like an 80s one.

make of cymbal?
-Meinl Byzance 14" Heavy Soundwave Hats. Funny thing, bought these for a metal project and ended up disliking them for that. However, with a lighter jazz stick they blend surprisingly well with my cymbals. Goes to show you can't judge a cymbal by it's intended target players.
-Dream Bliss 22" Ride. A teeeny bit brighter than other 22 Bliss rides. insanely music bell, raw yet refined crash, and an ocean of sticking sounds.
-A grimy old beater I'll be placing with something 19/20 this week

Just got a practice space in Boston a few months ago, hence the return to drumming.

What's up people? I'm new to this forum! I live in Minnesota, am 13 years old, and love to drum!

So, I guess I'll tell you a bit about me, and... well, drumming stuff. My current setup is a snare, hi-hat, cracked crash cymbal, kick drum, hi tom, and low tom. I have a mid tom, but I'm trying to get creative on a smaller kit, so I don't use it much. I also have an uncracked cymbal but I sort of like the feel/sound of the cracked cymbal. I'm not saying I never use my uncracked one though, I occasionally switch between them. I'm hoping to get a ride soon.

I'd say my biggest inspiration right now is Chris "Daddy" Dave. I really dig his style. Some other cats are Thomas Pridgen, Andrew McAuley, Chris Coleman, Mike Johnston, and any peeps out there that love meh instrument.

So, yeah that's all folks. Please, help introduce me to the fam. Peace out!

@Ian: Thanks man! I will upload some pics soon.

@MaryO: I guess, I'm half self taught half erm... teacher taught?? I watch drumming on youtube a lot and get inspired.
Once every month or so a drummer named Myron Mclean will come down and give me a lesson (he has a youtube check it out: http://www.youtube.com/user/Myrondrums). I also have a channel, but I'm not as good in the videos as I am now and I in general tend to not drum as good under camera for some reason.
But, anyway here's meh channel: http://www.youtube.com/user/ThePhodut

I have been only been playing on a real drumset for about a year, but I'd drum on paint cans and stuff before that.

So, yeah...

Oh...
Yeah!

Just in case you wanted to know I love odd time signatures!!!

Just in case you wanted to know I love odd time signatures!!!

Welcome to the forum.
Some advice: Get the basics down; hearing you play a dynamic-less 6/8 beat over and over again isn't going to impress anyone. Work on your technique, it's very loose at the moment. BUT if you polish what you have there, you'll clearly be doing some serious playing (after *serious* polishing, too, though).
And keep in mind odd-time signatures are the easiest, less creative way of sounding, well, odd; the great players all make odd time flow, and regular time challenge the listener.
Calm down on the tempo, take it slow and give it color, dynamics, and feel.

Fox.

Welcome to the forum.

Stay encouraged and keep at it. All that Color, Dynamics, groove and tempo stuff will come just keep practicing and don't ever quit playing the drums.

Work on your technique, it's very loose at the moment.
Fox.
Looking back on my video, I notice it is quite loose. I guess I don't really notice those things while I'm playing.
How would you suggest I improve it?
BTW, that video was mainly for laughs. My ipod actually was working and I was playing to a song.

Looking back on my video, I notice it is quite loose. I guess I don't really notice those things while I'm playing.
How would you suggest I improve it?

As I mentioned, take it down a notch. Go as slow as you feel it really under control so you don't have to focus so much on the actual drumming, and can hear what you're playing with some perspective.
Getting lessons once a week, specially having someone more experienced listen and give feedback on your playing in real time will really help.

Yeah, it would only I live on a farm in the middle of nowhere haha...
So, just go slower, eh? I can do that. But, the tempo of the song was fast, it's not like I could change that.
Anyway, I'm still not quite sure what you mean by not focus so much on the actual drumming. Do you mean just to play it without really thinking hard about it? Because, if that's the case, I usually think about it too much when I'm filming, and I know that. Are you saying to just go with it? I usually worry too much about making mistakes under camera, so yeah...

No, that's not what I meant.
What you have to do is taking it at a speed where you're in absolute control, and you don't have to be directing your efforts to being able to physically play this thing and get the concept right, a tempo where it flows without effort, so you can focus on actually listening to what you're doing and improving how it feels and how tight it is, as opposed to being 100% focused on barely playing this beat at that speed.

I dunno, to me it seemed like hewas in control. Yeah he was holding his sticks looser than most people probably do, but so what. If it works for him, and feels great for him why would he change?

That's a neat concept with the broken cymbal, works great for "white noise". have you ever thought about putting a rivet in it?

So you said you're into odd time signatures... have you ever heard of Dream Theater?

Great drumming and welcome to the forum!

Welcome! This is a great place to ask questions. And since you've been playing over 10 years and there's folks like me who just started a little over a month ago, we may be asking questions of you too :) And don't feel bad, I'm 43 and just starting out so there are several of us "late bloomers" around, too.

Glad to have you!

I am a wheelchair bound man who studied percussion as a teenager from one of the finest jazz drummers who recently passed away...It's been over twenty years since I picked up a stick but I've acquired a new kit and I have rediscovered the passion for playing. I hope the spirit of my former teacher is watching over me....

Welcome to the forum.

Don't be discouraged to find you have much to learn. This is a good place to do just that.

Fox made some good points. In your videos, you're all over the place. There isn't any groove or sense of steady time to any of it. Honestly, it was a bit much to take.

Slowing things down to a manageable tempo and using a metronome are going to help a lot.

I realize you're in the middle-of-nowhere Minnesota but I would highly recommend you try to find a good teacher in your area. Surely a local music store would be able to point you in the right direction. A teacher will really help you learn about playing solid time, using dynamics, how to tune your drums, etc.

Yeah, a good teacher would help. But, I assure you I can keep time. In the video I was attempting to do something, and it threw the time off. I swear there is just something about filming -- I usually suck a lot more in videos. But, nevertheless, yes; I know I have much to learn.

Hey everybody. This is my first post here.

I'm Troy, from Mandeville, Louisiana. I've been playing drums since I was 14 years old (almost 34 now.)

I just ordered the PDP X7 in Black on Black Pearlescent, with an extra kick drum to go with it. Hoping to receive it by this weekend! I'm super excited because this is literally the first new drum set I've ever owned. I've had the same Tama Rockstar kit since I was about 15 or so and this thing has been to hell and back. It has been refinished TWICE.

During the 90's we had what is referred to as the "May Flood" and my drum set was submerged in water for about a day. And you would think it would be utterly useless at that point. Well, I refuse to accept defeat as an option! So in order to salvage it, I stripped off all the hardware, removed the laminate and get this. UPHOLSTERED the set. That's right. I bought foam, fabric, upholstery pins and the works. It stayed like that for years. It sounded like crap of course, but I didn't care. My band of 7 years had split up and I wasn't playing them much anyways.

Then Hurricane Katrina happened, and my drums were then submerged for weeks.
Surely, this must be the end for them, yeah? No!

Once again, I stripped everything down to the bare wood. I spent days upon days wood filling, sanding, wood filling, sanding etc the shells. I also painstakingly grinded and polished every last piece of hardware: every bolt, every washer, everything was thick with rust. I then painted 3 coats of enamel paint and they were done. Had to use a lot of brass cleaner on the cymbals as well.

I don't have any pics of the first restoration but I have plenty of the more recent one. I'll post those in another subforum.

Hey everybody. I'm BRoM, and I've been playing like 2 years. I have a black CB 5-piece kit. Not the greatest set in the world, but we were able to buy it off somebody for like $200 with throne, sticks, cymbals, heads, and hardware. After doing a little touching up, it was good as new. Like I said, I've only been playing for a couple years, so I don't really claim to be as good as Buddy Rich, but I do listen to metal and rock. Stuff like Dream Theater, Tool, Alice In Chains, Steve Vai, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Metallica, System of a Down, and Van Halen. I also listen to the limited Jazz, Fusion, Funk etc. that I can get my hands on. My favorite drummer is (obviously) Buddy Rich, but I am open to many new drummers that I can discover.

Needless to say, I now have a pretty big passion for drums and I'm constantly trying to learn, because honestly I don't know much at all!

Also, I live pretty far away from the cities where music stores exist and where I could probably get a permanent teacher. I don't think my parents have enough time take me on a 2 hour drive to the cities every weekend, though. And I have school and all too, so...

Yeah.

What else is there to......Oh.

I guess I am playing snare for marching band this summer, if that means anything. I first learned how to hold the sticks right from my band teacher, even though I play clarinet in band haha.
That reminds me I also am taking piano lessons from a local teacher, and have some xylophone experience, because I play the xylophone in our school's upcoming play.
So, I guess I'm somewhat multi-instrumental if that's even a legitimate word, lol.

I wonder if finding some jam partners would help widen my perspectives as to drumming? Probably...

Anyway, sorry for the double post, lol.

Hey yall, i first want to state that i came to this forum like 6 months ago and left.. I now feel drums are happening thing with my life and there is no return, so why not be around others who feel the same!

Well a little about me, I'm 18, still id consider myself a noob drummer, but i do have a great desire to excel. Ive been on/off playing drums since 16 and tbh, its all i want to do these days. I'm not sure if i can really contribute to these forums so ill mostly be lurking and reading.

Drums, I have a 1980 something standard Pearl Export.

Cymbals: I have;Paiste 2002 15" sound-edge hats, Paiste 2002 24" ride, Paiste 2002 18" medium crash, Paiste 2002 16" crash, and am in the market for a Paiste 2002 20" medium.

My biggest Inspirations have to be, Mitch Mitchell, John Bonham, Bill Ward, and Nick Mason.

Anyways, ive got to go now, it will be nice seeing yall around!

Hi
Just registered here and thought i would give a brief self intro-

My name is John (original username!), I live in Tamworth UK with my partner. Children have left home now so just the two of us and our faithful bull terrier `Jack`.

I started playing on and off through school years then seriously with a a couple of bands from around 18, with the final band coming to an end in the late 80`s after becoming disillusioned with the whole music business thing and all the promises and expectations that never came to fruition. Although I would have continued with the band but the other guys just seemed to run out of steam and enthusiasm.
I have never lost my desire to play drums and music being my all time greatest mistress, vowed that one day I would return to the `throne`........Well, after over 20years of raising kids and doing the `grown up` stuff I finally bought a Roland TD12 last November for my birthday (49). Have played consistently for the last 6months and am enjoying it more than ever!!!!! (the advantages of e-kits).
The kit has grown somewhat since and through all its changes and permutations is now somewhere close to what I want in relation to gear, playability and how I like a kit to look. It`s a bit of a mutant with acoustic bass drum converted to `e`s, also a couple of converted acoustic toms, one to my left and one right as low floortoms. Hart dynamics and Roland toms with assorted Roland cymbals all running through 2 TD12`s and a TD6 brain and a Mackie proFX12. Not to everyones taste but I love it.
So, more of a musical intro (pun unintentional) to what I have read so far on here a great site for like minded people.
Looking forward to posting and spending some time here.

Cheers
John

Hi
I think I may have posted this in the wrong place initially!

Although I would have continued with the band but the other guys just seemed to run out of steam and enthusiasm.

age? 22
how long been playing? about 8 years
origin of user name? Nickname
top 5 drummers? Jojo Mayer, John Bonham, Nicko McBrain, Animal, Jungle Drummer (Jungle Drummer could be a bit controversial but then again he is probably the best known drummer in the UK Drum n Bass Scene.
make of drum kit? Premier Olympic

are you in a band/s? Yes, UK heavy rock band Sons of Icarus, and also started up a Jungle Drummer style DnB project for University

what style of music? Heavy Rock with Sons of Icarus, Drum n Bass for University project but I listen to anything from Jazz to Dance

one really odd fact about yourself? only 2 of my toes work properly, and I'm not really sure why!
how did you start drumming? Started playing bass but had no idea about theory or the technicalities of what I was playing so started from scratch on drums with formal tuition. I did this so that I could actually understand what I was playing and I would ultimatly have a greater appreciation of the music. Plus drums is more fun.

One really odd fact about yourself? Ehh one? Apparently I'm very cat like. I smell everything but I eat it, I'm always touching things and I'm always curious. Plus I can make convincing cat sounds which freak my cats out...Actually my last name means cat like person. Pretty weird.

How did you start drumming? Once upon a time I was listening to pop music, but I was really bored with it. I started going through my Dads cd collection and the first I picked was Led Zeppelin Physical Graffitti (I liked the name!). This was the first time I'd ever thought about the drummer in a band! Never gave any thought to drummers before this. Anyway, my birthday was a couple of days after (same day as Bonzos!!) and I bought the Led Zep DVD and was blown away. I try and think about that moment when drumming is getting annoying for me (like when I'm trying to fathom single stroke rolls....easy?! Yeah right haha).

Even though I have some 3000+ posts on here, I've never actually posted an introduction.

Better late than never!

My name is Ian

On the business side, I have worked at
Drum World in San Francisco, CA
Guitar Center in San Francisco, CA
B Street Music in San Mateo, CA
West LA Music in Los Angels
I have a degree in Business Administration with option in Finance, and additional education in accounting.

On the playing side,
I went to P.I.T. 1991-1992.
I’ve done my fair share of pick up gigs, but mostly focused on original bands.
In the late 90’s I played in front of at least one person from just about every record label that existed at the time, but none of the bands I was with quite got over that hump.
A few years ago I put out in independent CD, that sold copies from Japan to the Netherlands, to Brazil.
More recently, I have switched my focus to song writing, and recording in my home studio.

I am a drum gear geek, and my head is full of random drummer facts and trivia.

Age? 23

How long been playing? 7 years maybe? Lost track

Origin of user name? It's been my DJ name since I started scratch DJing at age 13... check out my website (http://www.djsymptoms.com) if you'd to see some scratch videos

Top 5 drummers? Neil Peart, Danny Carey, Tim Alexander, Tony Royster and Blake Richardson

Make of drumkit? Currently have a 5-piece acoustic kit (it's been refurbished and painted so I don't know what make) pieced together with my old Roland TD-3 pads to make a hybrid kit

Where do you practice? My living room has become a full out music studio

Are you in a band/s? I jam with several different groups of people and always have several projects going at a time, but no I'm not really in a band

Covers or originals? Both, I only enjoy covering songs that are at least somewhat tricky

What style of music? Everything from funk to metal

Favourite take out food? Thai or Mexican

Country? US

One really odd fact about yourself? I have an extremely odd sense of humor.

How did you start drumming? After playing violin and piano for a short while when I was young, my parents switched me to drums which I enjoyed playing and seemed to have somewhat of a knack for. I hated going to lessons though because I didn't like making any kind of weekly commitment so I ended up losing the drum set. Many years later in high school, I wound up getting a great deal on an electric kit and held on to that until it started to die out on me. Just recently bought a new acoustic kit and here I am.

I've learned a lot and been able to help many people out on djforums.com, I'm hoping to have a similar experience here. Looking forward to whatever I can learn and however I can help. :)

Born in Montreal Denis grew up in a musical environment including listening to his mother playing well known blues songs on the family piano. It was at this time at the age of 10 that his musical career began by playing on a home-made drum set which he made himself from metal cans and drum sticks sculpted from tree branches. At an early age he was surrounded by the sounds of his parents listening to Buddy Rich, Louie Bellson, John Bonham and Neil Peart.
After mastering playing the drums he went on to play the piano, the guitar and a host of other musical instruments. In his 30 year musical career he has played many styles of music. He has been greatly influenced by the Rock and Blues styles from the 70’s and 80’s. His studio experience - his experience playing popular festivals and numerous tours of Quebec and Western Canada have made him a seasoned musician whose performances on stage are always filled with high energy and good vibrations.

Real name: Alex Troke
Age: 13
How long been playing: 3 years, kinda fiddled around here and there before that
Origin of user name: Obviously, my name, and 2099 is just a number I use for everything, for some reason. I can't remember where it came from exactly, but I think it may have some relation to the Marvel universe based in 2099. There's some comics on it. :P
Top 5 drummers: John Bonham, Neil Peart, Tomas Haake, Dave Grohl, Danny Carey
Make of drumkit: Don't really have one right now, but should soon have a Gretsch Catalina Maple.
Make of cymbal: Again, don't have any, but the next ones will probably be either Sabian Xs20, or HHX, all depends on the cash.
Where do you practice: 3 places mainly; in a friends shed, at my school, and in a building that also has a restaurant in the same building, next door. That way, I can eat and play music. :D
Are you in a band/s: Yes. Deep Blue Sky as of now. We're a hard rock/heavy metal band. We play stuff like Marilyn Manson, Rage Against the Machine, Murderdolls, and a lot of original stuff. We are all multi-instrumentalists. My main instrument is guitar, but also play bass, keyboards, and drums. Our singer's main instrument is drums, but he also sings, plays guitar and bass. Our drummer also play bass, but he is mainly a drummer. Our bass player's main instrument is guitar. I've been in many beforehand too, and I'm also looking into being in another band or 2, to satisfy my need to play a plethora of musical genres. :)
Covers or originals: Both, tbh. I like covers, because the crowd can get into it more, because they know the song, and they're extremely fun to play. But covers show the audience that your capable of even more than just ripping off another band.
What style of music: A lot of different genres. :P Blues, Funk, Jazz, Grunge, Alt Rock, Hard Rock, Heavy Metal, Death Metal, Progressive Rock, Progressive Metal, Thrash Metal, Black Metal, Soft Rock, just, a lot of stuff.
Favourite take out food: CHINESE FOOD X9999999999999999999
Country: Canada
One really odd fact about yourself: If there was one person in the world I would kill, it is Justin Bieber.......I am not a Belieber....
How did you start drumming: Really, I just eased into it. I played in a band on guitar, and every once and a while, we'd all take a brake and eat. I was usually the first one finished, so I'd ask the drummer if I could play his kit. I still do this today. :P

New member, old drummer.

I've been playing drums since the late '50s. Got my first kit, a brand new WFL Buddy Rich Super Classic as a "You escaped from junior high" gift from worried parents. Kept it until last year.

I play rock, blues, jazz and have gigged with people no one ever heard of and also with names way too well known for their own good. Always the substitute when someone got sick, disappeared, or O.D.ed because my major job has been as a TV writer and producer.

My first paying writing job, in fact, came out my love for music: I wrote a film at MGM for one of the too-famous guys. He left the country, then died, before it could be shot, but I already was a pro drummer, and the script made me a pro writer too.

Although I'm not writing much these days, I'm still playing. I've been lurking in this forum for about a year. Great place. I look forward to knowing everyone better.

Be warned: I'll probably post pics of a couple of my kits.

Thanks for being here,

Hipshot

How did you start drumming: Started playing violin in 4th grade, And got my first guitar in 6th. My brother got his first bass that same year and we always traded back and forth learning both of them. He went on to do orchestra bass and then we got an electric organ. Later got the drum set and I picked up on that fairly easily. My brother ended up with all the stringed instruments and now has quite a collection. I'm still kicking it on the drums. Looking into a new kit though. Time to upgrade from my starter kit..

Name: Dusty
Age: 21
Years Playing: 8
Inspirations: Charlie Watts, Brooks Wackerman, Longineu Parsons III and many more.
Reason Behind Screen Name: My main band "On This Day"

My style of playing is a bit "unorthadox" because I try to combine the technique of all my favorite drummers. I played traditional grip for the longest time due to my stint in the marching band while I was in Junior High and High School. 'Till this day my snare drum tilts away from me, instead of level, or toward me. I'm a really straight forward guy, and I love to learn and talk shop.

EDIT: Sorry, wasnt aware of this page. I copied and pasted this to here.

Hi Peeps. :)
Im known as David Ford online, and strangely, Im a guitar player LOL. Ive been constantly on the search for drummers. Not sure HOW active I can be in the forums, but I'll try. But before I started posting, and getting to meet you all, I thought I'd intro myself. I dont want to seem like Im spam, so here it goes,,,(cough ,,,couch,,,COUGH!! Hey, its pollen season :P )

Name is Dave (duh LOL) Im from Boston Massachusetts. Im 39 years old. At one pint in my life I was an EMT. Currently I work transporting handicapped kids to a special school in Brighton Mass. Love the job. Lot different than I thought the job would be.

I originally picked up the guitar at age 6 (Will someone please turn off the background music? LMAO ) Even though, I never got guitar lessons, it never stopped me. Not that my Dad couldnt afford it (trust me he had money) I just never asked him. Id watch MTV, when it was MTV, and kept watching the video to see where guitar players fingers where (someone else's wallet LOL Kidding, cough)

By the age of,,,11-ish I bought my first electric with my own money from paper route. Still I never learned anything, that wasnt 100% visual. Didnt have book etc. I'd say for the next 20 years, all I did was play and watch. As that time went on, Id start putting names to the chords. Id catch someone on a show or video that would state the name of em.

Well, about 6-ish years ago, was playing my stuff in front of a friend who also played. He liked it, but said it was old. He was doing Metallica, and I was playing the Eagles etc. Not that it wasnt good, its just old. What he said was some what true, and it trully hurt. So I placed down my guitar, more likely to never play it again. Just about a year and half ago, my other REAL friend was bull, I placed the guitar down to never play it again. I used to come with things that normal players didnt. He used to be impressed, that I could take my guitar and play lead to things like, his kids toys, or to something that had no melody. Always had a tune, when one wasnt there.

So I agreed to retry, and thats when I met him (well, not him, but knowing of him) Joe Satriani. I heard of him before, but never listened to him. Once I heard his music, the heavens almost sang to me. Instrumental Rock, without singing. I couldnt sing, But could do more than just strum chords. He was right in my alley. So as of today, thanks to JOE, I know have 2 electric, 1 Bass (9 hours old) 2 electronic Drums, several pedals and ready to rock and roll. The only problem is, the $400 in electronic drums are almost useless to me. If it isnt a pre-set, Im lost. My only gripe is not having a drummer. Always doing projects online with guys, but the lack of drums or drummer, is a bummer. Which is what brought me here.

Sooooooo, I know Im not a drummer, but I always need one, and like to work with some online. And Im hoping the Admins and Mods, if its ok with them, ID like to stay and meet some of you. Im extremely good hearted, friendly, sense of humor and work well with others. (Am I joining a forum, or applying for a job?? LMAO :P ) Ok, I guess thats it (plus my hand is sore from typing so much.) Is it ok for me to stay?? Will follow all the rules!! (edit, cant spell tonight LOL)

Dave :)

Hello all, I've been reading this forum for a coupla years now but not posting so before I charge into any discussions it would only be polite to do the introduction thing first.
real name?...Tone (tone bloody deaf too)
age?...49
how long been playing?...started playing about 77/78 in communal house punk band and was godawful then, stopped for years though always a drum fan.My son started playing in his school band on the kit and when Grandma bought him a kit I decided I'd like to get back at it,that was a few years ago but I'm still bloody terrible but I love to woodshed so no harm done to an audience. One day I may be alright.
origin of user name?...Also a Wing Chun practitioner.
top 5 drummers?...without doubt, Danny Carey! many others from many styles but four names more, Donald Johnson (A Certain Ratio),Pete DeFreitas (Echo & the Bunnymen...RIP),Orestes (Bitch Magnet, I think that was his name),Terry Chambers (XTC)...many more though, like Hugo Burnham (Gang of Four),Karl Burns (The Fall),Topper Headon (The Clash) etc etc !!!
make of drumkit?...none, it's my sons,Percussion Plus 5 piece with added Sonor floor tom. Thinking of buying a Tama Superstar Hyperdrive, 7 piece when I build a shed to put it in.
make of cymbal?...Planet Z ride, crash and hats (birthday present) and china of unknown parentage + a Tama cowbell.
where do you practice?...Kit's in sons bedroom much to his chagrin.
are you in a band/s?...Not yet.
covers or originals?...N/A
what style of music?...well !!! If I could play like Danny Carey, whatever took my fancy but, that ain't gonna happen at my age so drummers above should hint at styles.
favourite take out food?...I prefer to cook my own food but probably Thai.
country?...Born in England, grew up in New Zealand, live in Australia.
one really odd fact about yourself?...I work hard, while at work.
how did you start drumming?...Always loved to listen to drums and just happened to get a kit when punk hit town and talent was not required to have a bash.Seriously wish I had taken it more seriously then though but, hey! Whaddya do? 20/20 hindsight is a bitch.

Hey everyone,

My real names Leonard and i live in new south wales, Australia I am 20 years old as of yesterday and i have been playing drums for about 5 months and i get lessons weekly.

I currently have a mapex voyager drum kit and im trying to learn as much as i can which is why i think this forum is a great place.

My favourite drummer is cobus potgieter and he is the reason i play drums as well as the fact that drumming is just epic and the skill involved in playing well interests me.

I don't know what else to say so yeh hi :P
