This is a coordination exercise I made to challenge several mental as well as physical aspects of drumming, it´s not meant to be a musical exercise per se, so take it for what it is!

This is my first "lesson"-type clip attempt so please critique!

This is really cool, would you be able to explain the snare part a bit further? Actually, if you could show notation for the snare part along with either the bass drum or hihat, that would be the best thing...if that's possible. I've never quite got my mind around 5 over 4 patterns.

If I´m doing this right you should be able to see some transcriptions I made...

First of all, polyrhythms is a mess to learn and even more so to explain to others, but I´ll give it a try! =)

The snare accents creates a 4 over 5 polyrhythm, not a 5 over 4 dito. There is a huge difference as with 4 over 5 you only have to deal with 16:th note subdivisions and with 5 over 4 you got to subdivide with quintuplets.....

The first transcription is a basic 4 over 5 polyrhythm with quarter notes on the bass drum

The second transcription is the snare pattern from my exercise over a quarter note bass drum, which would be a good preparatory exercise for that pattern.

Finally you see the snare pattern over the 4 over 3 bass drum part..

Hope this was helpful! /Seb

Ah, I see...yes, of course, that's why I've been finding it hard to work out. Quintuplets are inaccessible to me at the moment! Thanks for these, I'll work through them.

By the way, did I notice you are from Värmland? Nice place, I've visited there many times in the past.

Wow, it´s a small world!

I live here at the moment as I have studied here for some years.... What´s your defense? ;)

If you want to study odd note-groupings further I would recommend Gary Chaffee´s book "rhythm and meter patterns" A nice introduction to this stuff!
