finished snare " the mutt "

this started out as a 1970 ludwig acrolite snare that was in pretty poor condition . we decided to name it the mutt as there are so many parts from different companies on it - legend throw off , pearl butt , amdrum lugs , gilbralter hoops , well you get the idea !
i originally was going to powder coat the shell but after talking with the powder coating guy there were concerns about the finish not sticking to the shell due to the anodizing and the heat involved cooking the paint . so i decided i would spray it . the color is called lime ice and we did alittle trimming in carbon fiber tape . best thing is it still has that great acrolite sound .

The snare looks fantastic! As far as powder coating over anodized material, the concerns, are valid. I work in an aluminum extrusion plant and we paint and anodize. To powder coat or wet paint successfully, the shell would have to have been "stripped out" in an caustic etch bath, then rinsed, then it would have been ready for the alodine paint pretreatment. We occasionally will etch extrusions that have carbon marks that we know will bleed through the paint then run them through our paint line with no issues. As far as the heat goes, there would have been no issues there.

I actually think the snare looks better the way you did it versus powder coating.

The Lime Ice colour is very nice by itself, but that carbon fibre tape is a great finishing touch! I love it!

great looking snare! What did you treat the snare with before you spraypainted it?frank , heres a run down on the different coats applied .
first i sanded down the shell with some 180 grit , then to 320 . i then did the polishing of the bead . next went on the etching primer ( light coat ) that was then sanded down with 320 . by the way i had to be very careful of the polished bead at this time which had been taped off before any spraying . next went on the filling primer , this was sprayed thick and allowed to dry for a day before sanding . after sanding , on went another thick coat of filling primer , and another day of drying . i then sanded with 800 wet sand and then 1200 wet sand . then the green laquer was sprayed and allowed to dry overnight . next went on two pretty thick coats of clear enamel with a flash time of 30 minutes between coats . after a couple of days of drying it was back to the wet sanding process using 1500 and then 2000 grit paper and then followed by some hand buffing and a nice coat of car polish . hth !
