Hi! I have the beginnings of carpal tunnel... it seems to be worse in my left hand.. even though my right hand does more work. I have come to a conclusion that this is from rimshots. Every snare hit I play is a rimshot, unless its fast singles. I wonder if I got a snare with wooden hoops as opposed to metal hoops it might possibly help my case a little.

Any ideas?

Rims wont help. Carpal tunnel is the result of grip. I recomend you see a top end instructor and get it sorted out properly.

Good luck.

I agree with Wy Yung, and why is every shot you play on the snare a rimshot??? Hitting the snare dead centre should give you a good crack anyway.

rimshots should be played as relaxed as every other type of stroke!
avoid any tension in your movements.

I don't think it will make that much of a difference

Agree here too. It's not the rim it's technique. And, for the sake of repetition, "Why are you using rim shots?" (Love your drums, and, quite beating the snot out of them djpin89.) Learn "the Moeller Technique." It will change your life. @:-)

And, don't play as much until you get things worked out. That can turn very serious and complicated.

As cheesy and pushy a salesman as he is, Matt Furey made a book for carpal tunnel that sorted mine out almost instantly. Google him and you'll find it. It's a little spendy, but I would avoid mainstream doctors as (in my experience at least) they're VERY quick to suggest surgery.

(And at least one lady at work had the surgery with no relief whatsoever.)

Now if I can get my CUBITAL tunnel sorted, I'll be a happy dude.
