Hi-
My names britt and Im a relatively new member here. I would really love some feedback on this clip of me playing. Its what I played for the drumoff this year and is around 5 min. It might take a minute to download. Its in quicktime format too. Thanks. P.S. Please nothing about the way I look when I play, I already know at the end I look like a walrus trying to eat peanut butter.

Nice video man:
Great ghost notes
Great accents
Great rudiments.
I think you got it all covered in there.

Is it me or does the video is in delay of the sound ?

Btw: nice tunes in the toms! That was a yamaha stage custom ?

Wow, that was sweet man. I really like the groove you started at about 1:30, sounds awesome. Nice set up too. I think you'll do very well in the drum-off, I have one coming up this Friday myself. Have fun with it man.

Great job!! Loved it. I actually enjoyed watching your clip more than most others I've seen on this board. Great technique. I noticed your posture is excellent also...really helps with the playing to be positioned right.
Actually, physically I think you look like a young Dave Grohl....lol
Great work

Nice groove, and I dig the sound of the kit as well!

I am going to be setting up my drumroom like that with sonex or other echo busting sound insulation.

It's nice to hear tonality when drumheads are tighter like that.

Very cool, and crispy snare as well.

Thanks man. Yeah, its a stage custom with a pearl omar hakim snare. the tom heads are hydraulic. There might be a delay in the sound just a little because we sent it through a recorder and had to sync it to the camera. Thanks to everyone so far.

heh.

really, really nice. i usually hate solo drum stuff, but i listened to you all the way through - i liked it.

you might be interested in checking out a guy/band called Mice Parade. It's a 1 man band and your drumming reminds me of his earlier work...see what you think. (http://fat-cat.co.uk/fatcat/release.php?id=80 i like open air dance part 2 - drums don't come in for quite a while but it's real cool, into the freedom pt3 is lovely too)

anyhow, very nice, very good.

Great drumming man! I love the 6-8 time. You also have monster chops too. You got any good songs in 6-8 time that I can listen to, because I'm working on different times. Anyways, you are a monster! I envy your playing!

Very nice dude, I love the sound of your snare... i love the kinda jazz solo bit near the end, after using double bass pedals for so long ive got lazy with my right foot, like keeping up a double with just the one foot, need to get back to basics. Also i noticed a few triplets in there i think.
Really good man (Y)

just a note ... i watched the video again

during the samba rhythm ... move your hands around between the snare and tom a bunch ... the right melodies sound sick even just sixteenth notes!

That's some fine, straight playin' man!

The first beat was somethin' like 6/8 Nanigo, right? Gotta say I'm impressed with your technique, and though it's not my sound (I mean drums:)), I liked your ideas. So from me, you got a point!

Thanks man. Not sure what that first beat is actually called. I just started playing an afro cuban 6/8 on the toms and came out with that.

Do you study with anyone? If not you should right away, because you are REALLY good! You would be a dream student I think. Man you got skills, and taste! You've got what it takes to go to the next level, as long as you can get the whole "life" part down. A lot of good drummers fail, because they can't do the little things like show up on time for auditions and stuff right.

I like the structure of your solo too, you started and ended with the same style of playing, and all the stuff in the middle was really tasty.

I guess you pretty much put the Evans Hydraulic argument to rest. Those toms don't sound like wet cardboard to me one bit. Although, I'd still prefer some clear G2s ;-)

I really like your cymbal too, can you drop some specs on us? That ride is pretty groovy (nice crash sound)

I can only find 2 small things to nit-pick. Sometimes the second beat of your doubles on your pedal fall off real weakly. In the fast samba part and in the more fusiony chops riddled part the second note fizzled out a bit, volume-wise. It might help to think of the beat as ba-BAH ba-BAH...really emphasising the second note. You might want to open up that bass drum sound a bit, because right now it is very staccatto and short. If you take some muffling out and tune it up a bit higher, the notes resonate between each other, giving you some more legato style sounding playing (and thus disguising any ill timed fast samba beats, heh).

Also, you hit the crash a couple times on its own without a backing snare or bass drum note. That always sounds really thin and amateurish to me. Of course, you may have chosen to just hit the cymbal for artistic reasons, but the one time it looked pretty obvious that the cymbal hit was an after though, and you didnt' quite have the feet/hands lined up. But that is a VERY minor detail...the rest of the playing was spot-on!

Awesome man!

Stu

Thanks Stu. I do have a private teacher here in Colorado and he is an absolute monster. I thought your criticism was right on both levels. On that bass drum, when I listen to it I definitely hear an accent then almost a grace note. I ll try your tuning advice and see if that provides some sort of help though. Yeah, there were flaws in the video it was the same day as my all state jazz band auditions and I really just hammered this one out, first take and all, thus the empty crash. Thanks again man!
My cymbal specs are:
16 in. Zildjian Constantinople crash
14 in. Paiste Dark Crisp Hats
22 in. Zildjian K Custom Dark Ride
18 in Zildjian A Crash/Ride, now an A Custom Crash

Is the ride that you play on the bell and crash a couple times the 22 K or the other ride/crash?

Man, nice stuff. I had to listen again.

I finally got this thing downloaded.

Man, you're a great player. I really liked that massive world groove you were layin' down about a minute into it. Where did you pull that from? To me, I heard alot of African stuff and it was very cool. And wow, what a fine set, and you play it great. Those doubles were super clean.
And I really liked that old school loose hi-hat. It added alot.

I'd love to hear you play some jazz with a band too.

Thanks for turning me on to this.

Hey matt-
Thanks a lot for the compliments.Yeah, I did do a lot of African stuff in there. My drum teacher is like heavy into that stuff, so he shows me some. The beat I was doing at about a minute was actually variation on the Dou Doumba, I dont think thats how you spell it, but I learned the basic rhythm and then applied it to the set with kind of a shuffle feel. Thanks again man for the kind words and Ill try to get some recordings of me with a band on here.
