New drum seat.

I know how much you love my constant making of stuff out of various cheap materials and low quality workmanship, well i've got something else now. In about march (i think) i got a drum throne for like £30 which was fine until the seat broke:

ouch yeah. The stand is still fine though so i figured instead of buying some fancy pants roc 'n' soc seat or something i'd make my own! I went down to the local craft store, got myself some foam and stuck it on some leftover MDF i had from the desk build. Then i stuck the mount from the old seat onto it. So far i've ended up with this:

I reckon i might make it a better shape like a tractor style or something then maybe stick some fabric on it. Sadly i can't seem to find my favourite of all fabrics, the camo (:p) in my house so i dunno i could get anything really.http://209.85.12.232/7460/166/emo/shrug.gif

Edit: I've added a couple pics of my kit as it is currently, not quite the monster it used to be but as i said, that was really just for giggles, this is a lot more comfortable to play.

The kit as it is now, just a boring old 1 up 2 down :p i'm thinking of making it a bit bigger again, but this time keeping it as 1 kick and having slightly more "managable" size rack toms. Something like this:

10, 12, 8 ,14, 16, 22 sorta thing. I used to want really huge drums but now i've figured what's the point? I'm happy with the tunings and they're loud enough as they are so standard sort of sizes will do me i reckon :).

Speaking of cheap materials and low quality workmanship, I rejuvenated an ancient round throne I use for my practice pad set. The way it's made it can't be taken apart, I just scraped off the rotten foam and glued some new foam to it, two layers of the dense rubbery egg crate kind for under sleeping bags. I made the foam slightly larger than the seat, to avoid a sharp edge. The plywood of the seat is very thin, not enough "meat" to staple into, so for a covering I used a stocking cap. Being elastic it pulled nice and tight underneath. All made for free with stuff I had around the house.

I thought about taking a wooden kitchen stool and using the padded round seat from it to attach to the old wood on the throne. It would have been ideal but I couldn't bring myself to destroy a good stool.

I hope I'm not hijacking, just wanted to throw in my crazy ideas just in case.

I would be careful with the particle board as the screws tend to rip right out especially with the rocking back and forth. You may want to reinforce the thing with some plywood attached to the particle board then put the seat mount onto that.

the bolts did have metal fastners that were attached to the plywood originally which i then stuck in the MDF.

im seriously considering buying a roc n soc seat as an upgrade from my £18 1st drum seat that feels like im sitting on stone :D


whats the foam that u use to do this? and how much does it cost, if its not too much i may give this a try as an experiment :D

The foam is literally just some stuff from boyes, it was 12"x12"x2" but i think that maybe 14x14x2 would have been a bit better, the MDF was just from Homebase i think but literally go into any decent DIY store and there will be a section with sheets of plywood, MDF, Chipboard etc for the base of the seat. The foam was the only thing i actually bought, the rest i already had so really so far i've spend £2.40.

Yep MDF base, foam for the top. It's actually exceedingly comfortable, a lot better than the old one anyway. Apart from that all i did was shove the old tube mount from the old seat onto this one which you can see on the last picture of the first post.

the only thing is, is that if i do it and its really uncomfortable/badly made, how hard is it to put the tube mount back onto the old seat??

as im from england aswell any local stuff i could probably get my hands on fairly easily as homebase is about 5mins away :D



also, i dont think we have a boyes near me, any idea were else i could look?

Well i had to practically destroy my seat to get the tube mount out so i would say the chances of getting it back on are pretty low i'm afraid. Yeah i just used normal wood glue to stick the foam onto the MDF. Well i'm sure any decent craft store would sell foam.

Well the thing is that the actual mount screws straight off but you'll also probably want the metal inserts that hold the bolts in which are on the other side of the base of the seat.

i don't think there's much point in buying off there unless you want a memory foam seat. It's a lot cheaper to just buy normal sort of foam, no specialist stuff or anything. Well i might get it upholstered soon because my mum found her upholstering kit so that's good.

It is actually yeah, a lot better than the old seat anyway.
