View Full Version : Independence exercises?
Hey,
Lately, I've become interested in polyrhythms and I've been practicing a few simple ones like a 3/8 or 5/8 ostinato over a 4/4 groove. I was wondering if anyone has any good exercises (Besides just playing polyrhythmic grooves, like I mentioned before) for improving independence in all limbs to help me progress to a more advanced level.
Thanks in advance!

do you play jazz? if you don't i'd check some out.
it will further your independance greatly but in a very musical way which will then help you play other styles better.

i used to know a few that involved triplets with one hand and straight or swung rhythms with the other. those used to help my independence.
e.g- play the standard 'swing' rhythm with your right hand and then play crotchet triplets at the same time with your left.
i know that there are more, as the possibilities with these are unlimited, but i'm not all that clued up on polyrhythms

Dude check out the Joe morello "master studies" book (there's actually 2 of them). It works your hands amazingly, and also has a TON of independence excercises. It IS exactly what youre looking for, I promise.

Oh yea , also I got the Gavin Harrison book rhythmic Illusions back in the day, and it has some really cool and hard polyrhythm stuff, but its well explained.
