Hey im new here but I have known about this godly forum for a while. So my question is, is it normal that I lean back when i play double bass fast? I always saw when people were giving advice here that you should lean forward,

Leaning backwards may result in cancer ;)

I think it is more important to maintain a solid sitting position and not really reposition at all.

nothing about how people move when playing drums is normal. i guess what you should really be wondering is how it might be damaging your back? if at all? but i wouldn't know.

If you are relaxed and there is no tension in your body then it's probably not an issue unless you lean back so far that you can't reach the drums with your sticks. Whatever is comfortable and whatever works provided your technique is sound.

It is pretty usual for a beginner to lean back when playing double kick. You're trying to hold your legs suspended in the air and your balance is not too good, so you're leaning back to compensate. Work on using your hip flexor muscles to lift your legs, while keeping your back straight. At the same time work on centering your weight on the throne, without using your legs to balance yourself. An excercise for this is to try to hold both of your feet above the ground while maintaining a straight back and proper posture.
You might want to play with the height of your throne a bit to make this easier

thank you for all the advice guys, i have tried to lean forward or more straight at that but it kills my legs to play fast like that.

yea man just make sure you never feel out of balance. play around the kit in every way you can think of and make sure balance is never an issue. If it is something has to change. Seat height, and lack of a comfortable position are usually the problems I would say. If youre leaning back, I feel like you could be sitting too close to the snare (or sitting too close in general). I'm just throwing this out there. Hope it helps!

when i first started playing double bass i used to lean back, but now i feel more comfortable sitting in a regular upright position and i don't lean forward or back. i didn't consciously work on that, it just felt better after i'd been doing it a while.

I agree with Fiery. Leaning back has everything to do with the way you're lifting your legs!

Sit relaxed on a chair with back straight then raise your feet a few inches off the ground. If you stay sitting up straight, you'll find that you really strain your thighs so you naturally lean back to compensate. From here you should be able to work out how to lift your legs and keep your centre of gravity.......centred!
