Never try tightening your grip to gain control of your stick. That leads to tension which leads to poor execution of your strokes, plus you'll hurt the crap out of your hands. Search the Vic Firth Sites for Dom's technique workshops for a better idea of what is required of your grip, fulcrum etc. Technique takes months if not years to perfect so learning the correct motions, grips ect from the start is crucial. There are also plenty of threads by pro's who are kind enough to part with their hard earned knowledge regarding this subject, I suggest doing a search and reading up on your problem and dont forget to check out the Vic Firth website. If possible, seek a pro drum instructor to assist with this, it will be worth the bucks.

If your sticks are sliding either back into or out of your hands, then the problem is most likely that you're not utilizing a fulcrum in your grip/stroke. If you ARE, then the problem is you need to look for a better one. Experiment and find out where on the stick, when balanced between your fingers, gives you the most bounces when dropped on to a snare/pad. That should be your fulcrum. The stick should move/revolve around this point of the stick.

I have a lot of drummers/students coming to me wondering why they have to grip the stick so tightly. This is the reason 99% of the time (once, it was because someone used too much stick wax, and it made the sticks slip out of his waxy hands. He thought, "the more, the better"...)

This was happening to me also until I switched to a larger diamter stick. I have large hands. I went from 747's to 5B's. I gained control of that problem as well as being able to feel a better balance for the stick. the larger diameter did not add volume to my playing like I feared it would. This may help.
