View Full Version : Will you not improve if you practice a particular technique every OTHER day?

Rather than every day, that is.

There's a lot of stuff I want to get good at ie. a lot of different techniques and things like sight reading/independence and things like that - and there isn't enough time in the day for me to practice all the techniques I want to get good at every day (for the minimum of 10 minutes per limb required) - so I want to alternate them every other day.

My question is: will alternating them (the techniques practiced) every other day mean that I will never improve at the techniques because the improvement is 'forgotten' by the next time I practice?

Did you guys ever get good at a technique by practicing it every other day?

You will certainly improve your technique if you practice properly. Maybe not as fast as a daily routine, but you should improve over time.

The older I've become there's been less time for practicing due to other obligations, however that doesn't mean I've stopped trying to get better. Practice when you can.

I find myself to make much better improvement if I work on the same few areas every day rather than working on 59 different things over the course of a 2 and a half week period! Just pick like 4 things and work on each of them every day for like 4 months. That way you'll really be able to master them and work them into your playing much more effectively than if you dabble in them every few days.

Prioritise too. Work on the more "important" stuff first. Probably better to work on your sight reading and consistently burying the click instead of superimposing half time left foot clave rhythms over inverted flam cheese peanut mongrels (doesn't exist, but you get the idea)
