Hello all. I currently have Black Suede Emperors on my toms and an Aquarian Hi-Energy on my snare. Today my drum teacher pointed out the lack of response and got me thinking.

The power dot coating kind of kills some of the dexterity of the head. He also said he uses single ply on his toms as well.

I was just curious on the community's opinions on single ply heads being used around the kit vs double ply. I looked through the "what heads do you use" thread but I am looking more for opinions than what is actually used. (I'm a big Aquarian fan btw).

Does anybody have experience with Aquarian heads, namely the Super-2s?

I put some single-ply Texture Coated heads on my Yamaha birch kit when I first got it, and I wasn't that impressed with the sound or quality (Aquarian has recently shifted their maufacturing base to Mexico, whereas Remo and Evans are still in the U.S.). The floor tom didn't have enough low-end, so I put a Remo Emperor on it and got the sound I wanted. I really love the sound of the Super Kick bass drum head, though!

There's nothing wrong with using double ply heads around the kit if that's what you prefer. Same with single ply. I don't have experience with Aquarian heads but I'd love to try them out next time it's time to replace heads.

I am pretty much stuck on 2 ply coated heads on my toms to get them to sound like I want.
It may be my incomplete knowledge of tuning but I am afraid to try single ply for fear of overtones I don't want and I can't afford to buy a set and then find out I don't like them. I'm not stuck with one brand, but Evans has been good to me so I stick with them. Aquarians may be in my future.
