What does attack represent? Is it the initial "pop"?

Attack is defined as the sound of the stick or beater hitting the head. That initial hit is the attack. Attack has nothing to do with the tone, resonance or sustain of a drum head.

"It appears that the man was attempting to milk the mother bear, and she responded with a frenzied attack using her teeth and claws to rip his body apart. Its a damn shame too, because bear milk is notoriously bitter."

Attack drum heads are noticeably louder than other ordinary singleply heads. Bright, crisp attack. Great when you need a little “extra” projection.-Attack web site

Not to be confused with intervention.
