I'm giving some drumlessons to beginners around the age of 12, so most of the time they never touched a drumkit. How would you start?

I know this subject has come up before, but I must have you ask yourself:

If you don't even know where to start, then shouldn't you be honest to them and yourself and send them to someone who has experience and a plan?

In the meantime, if you are interested in teaching I would suggest doing research on beginning and intermediate level material. Start buying basic snare and drumset books and cd's and plan out a course that you think will work for you. It is much better to do it that way than to jump right into it without a plan.

I agree with Jeff. I believe the best way to start is to learn how to become a teacher. Now I don't mean for that to sound the wrong-way. If you can teach, then great ! If not then it's time to start finding out if you can. I say try it...but give it a lot of thought.

I personally took a stab at teaching years ago and found out I wasn't organized in the thought process enough to do the job correctly. Best Luck !

You can make up a plan as you go, but you need to think ahead. That's what I do. I have no idea what I will teach my pupil 5 weeks from now, but I know we're gonna be working on drum rolls, and grooves with bass drum syncopation for at least two more weeks.

Just think back: what was your first drum lesson? I give my pupils an extract of that lesson along with something else.
