Hi friends / drummers,
I had a fair amount of questions and enquiries about why I deleted my original "here" thread on the forum, and decided to set another one up.
It would be nice to once again stay in touch with friends and drummers alike on Bernhard's excellent website here.
Been up to recently? I had a wonderfully enjoyable month long tour reuniting with my brothers and partners Allan Holdsworth and the great Jimmy Johnson earlier this year. Here are some clips I found around the Youtube realm...
Gas Lamp Blues - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9ept9rEVjwE
Letters Of Marque - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLPsSo8G8P8&feature=related
Drums solo - Letters Of Marque - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n-pnvbaowI4
Fred - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rcExX9l-Bi4
Another drums solo - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8eRqzh7eT9w&feature=related
My jazz quartet project, Gary Husband's Drive released it's debut CD "Hotwired", available at Amazon and most online retailers (also for download at iTunes). The album project and it's live dates, that we have all been excited about, generated great feedback. Review clips, many and various pics and new live show audio clips can all be found at the band's website - www.myspace.com/garyhusband39sdrive
A Youtube clip of the band's debut gig back in 2007 is at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Usoy7JgLrWo
As ever though, and as a creature of regular change, I'm plotting my new projects. I'm going electric again, with two new projects. The first will be a fusion / rock CD featuring many friends, musical associates such as John McLaughlin, Allan Holdsworth, Jimmy Johnson, Mark King, Jack Bruce, Ray Russell and many others. The second will be an electric trio named Gary Husband Electric Trio featuring great Turkish keyboardist and programmer Aydin Esen. We also will record an album.
My DVD project of a few years ago (Gary Husband's Force Majeure - featuring Randy Brecker, Jim Beard, Arto Tuncboyaciyan, Matt Garrison, Jerry Goodman and Elliot Mason) has been long since deleted unfortunately. Some film clips live on thanks to Youtube though, and some of those links are..
Drum Solo - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CWBk50vykUA
11/8 established - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wwUMcuzCI4U&feature=related
Randy Brecker solo - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yxhPncfxiow&feature=related
The project with Jack Bruce and Robin Trower tours again soon, performing again music from our album "Seven Moons". A live DVD looks likely to transpire from our last tour at some point. (www.jackbruce.com)
There's a Youtube clip of us here - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdYyrEmTUV4
One of my other ongoing duties as a sessioner (Level 42) released a new live CD from a recent date (shortly to also become a DVD) - Live In Holland '09 - (http://www.level42.com/shop/)
I'll be back on the road with John McLaughlin next year, but for now there's a new DVD of the band - John McLaughlin & The 4th Dimension Live in Belgrade that came out recently. (www.johnmclaughlin.com)
Here are some Youtube clips (playing in the band alongside Mark Mondesir in the principal drum seat)..
Sulley - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FEBYYdPN2YE
Playing the jungle kit - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=esJiZlk0bNk
Nostalgia and synth solo - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEdqJE1Xuco
My own website (www.garyhusband.com) is currently being rebuilt and will appear in the near future, very differently.
Until then I'm also at www.myspace.com/garyhusband (where all my dates and activity is listed and updated regularly).
Looking forward to sharing correspondence with you soon.
Yours in rhythm, harmony and inspiration.

Hey Gary, Abe here! We met at QBA when Hellborg was sulking because of gear malfunction but you went ahead & blew the house down.
I saw your Force Majure DVD recently, and the compositions and your playing ( piano & drums ) is always so ahead of the curve , musically speaking. Bravo.
Thank you for all your music, always.

Dear Abe, thanks so much,
It's a shame I didn't manage to make the planned album recording for that project - I was very much hoping to. Couldn't really get it financed. To be fair to the musicians, we only had two sort afternoons to rehearse before those initial concerts, and everyone was jetlagged to the hilt. Nevertheless the DVD had plenty of inspired moments, and I was proud of everyone involved. Then the DVD itself disappeared due to fights with the company over agreements. Oh well!! It was a very nice project for me, and some nice clips of the film appear on Youtube now so at least there's this.
It's really nice that some people saw it and always great to hear it's still being enjoyed now.
Thanks again.

Hi Gary.
Thanks for sharing. I had the pleasure of seeing you perform with Allan many years ago at the Corner Hotel, Richmond, Melbourne Australia. I am still reeling from it! It was like being hit repeatedly in the head by Ponting Ashes losses!
Great show. Thanks for all the inspiration.

Pleasure to be here and thanks very much!
Level 42's not my strongest, most natural or most significant effort personally speaking, but I always have done my best with them. And it's nice to hear when people have enjoyed that particular avenue of my musical life.
Wishing you the best too.

Gary, hi again. I've heard you say this before over the years, and always wondered what your issues were with Level 42?
Knowing you now to be a rather serious minded musician, with a wide palette of sophisticated musical tastes, was it the very notion of playing pop music or intra-personal/business issues with the people involved, or just plain not connecting with the music?
You know, I listened to a lot of L42 ( cassettes!!! ) on an African safari many many years ago. It was the only music I carried on that trip, and listening to Staring at the Sun while actually staring at the African sun setting over the Serengetti was quite a heady experience, I can assure you), and even back then I always used to wonder...- as a drummer, mind you-... that playing with a bass player who does this constant 16th note thing all the time can be awfully restrictive & boring for a creative drummer.
Back then, I imagined you to be musically 'starving' in that situation playing all those 4s on the floors. Then, predictably, I started to hear the buzz about you being dissatisfied.
Do tell what it was really like for you?

I have absolutely no issues playing pop music - I've played and still do play lots of different pop and rock music, together with lots of other different kinds of music. With pop and rock, the recent album with Jack Bruce and Robin Trower ("Seven Moons") is one good example.
The thing with L42 - and I'm always very flattered to be asked to play with them - is that it has a fair amount of jazz/funk elements to it, predominantly, and I never particularly really felt at ease or naturally drawn to that style too much, so that would always mean a lot of work for me, just to adapt, but in particular to sound good at it. I enjoy, and always enjoyed a lot of the old L42 songs though.
The basic thing is that Phil Gould (to me always the REAL Level 42 drummer) played and developed all of that stuff to such a great level, and evolved as a player with Mark to such a point they played so well together, that anything I've done since - playing a lot of all those early songs which Phil was a part of - just sounds kinda like weak tea to me.
I mean I do my absolute best - I do my absolute best in all music I get to play and every time I play - but since the show is pretty static and pretty true really to the arrangements the original band used to do I regard my participation in the thing more of a "session" type thing, and in that, I would, as with any session, just try to be as strong, funky and reliable and consistant a drummer for the unit in terms of making the songs and the whole band show good and strong. Beyond that, it doesn't end up being too much in the way of anything special in regards to what my own particular input has entailed.
Since I'm involved in many other situations as a musician, and ones where I'm infinitely more creative and get to be more original I pretty obviously, and most naturally I guess, prefer my participation and acheivements in those areas.
That's pretty much my standing on it all. Phil was the originator of L42, but I (for instance) was the originator of a lot of Allan Holdsworth's music.. so, we've all got our own thing, in spite of the fact others have come along since and played drums in both bands. And that's another interesting subject. I'm still pondering on which Mars Volta drummer I prefer... but I'm pretty much on the original guy at this moment
L42's a thing I've been doing over the years. It's a well-known act, and Mark's given me a lot of work playing for the band, but I don't feel it's really too representative of what Gary Husband does really well, or happens to be work I excell in particularly.
Thanks for the question and I hope all this clarifies my standpoint on it all.
Best,
GH

Gary, thanks for the clarification and for your personal perspective.
Sorry to come across as a pesky Mr. 20 questions, but when you feel up to it, you could tell us something about your experiences with John McLaughlin. I have heard from people who've played with him that his understanding of rhythm is something to behold, besides his obvious greatness as a musician. I was listening to the dvd with you on keys with Mark Mondesir and him..
...was that something more representative of the 'inner musician'?
To me, as a fan, your Force Majure gig, man!!! undescrible, and nothing quite tops that.
Your thoughts? I'll take a rain check if you've had enough of me today ; )

Yeah, it's great with John! Very demanding and creative.
He does indeed have a very evolved conception and understanding of rhythm most certainly too - knows the konacol system entirely as well.
Thanks for the very kind words on Force Majeure too. I still dream of trying to record some of that music.

Hey Gary!
Just wanted to say hi and thanks for many years of inspiration. I met you at a gig in Adelaide (Australia) way back in '94. You stood side of stage and watched me play with my band and I tried to get you up to have a hit, but you said you'd had a few beers and didn't want to!! The next night we supported you at an Alan Holdsworth gig and it was absolutely fantastic. I think you broke nearly every stick you had.
At the end of the night you gave me your address and phone number on a little piece of paper and told me to look you up if I ever came to London... and I still have that piece of paper in the CD jacket for Alan's 'Hard Hat Area!'... sure hope you haven't moved!!!!
Hope all is well and great to see you doing so much interesting stuff.
Cheers,
Brad Polain.

Very kind, thanks so much,
Yes I'm up to a good many different and very varied things - among them is a bunch of stuff I run down (with links to Youtube things) on the first post of my whole thread here... including some recent Allan performance.
Re Allan, well we have been playing since 1979.. so a good bit of history there, and a great, great deal of development we have done through together. It's doesn't feel complicated to me, it feels quite natural and always did - his music. I guess sometimes that happens between people. I was very lucky it happened for me.
We'll be in Canada in a few weeks (Allan, Jimmy Johnson and myself), so it's still very much an active relationship.
Best wishes to you, thanks for listening and thanks again to you.

Would be cool to see a matured Gary up on stage again.
Interesting comment.

Gary, there's a long sequence of you and Allan where the bass drops out. Are you still keeping the form of the tune? Everyone comes back in at the same spot and I didn't hear any kind of queue. If you are keeping the form, can you give any tips on how to do it? You and Allan really stretch there and can't imagine taking it that far outside and still singing the form in my head.

Hi jordanz, and thanks,
There's actually no form in the solo section of that tune - it's just an open section over a bass riff - at least until two cues that brings us eventually out of it. There's usually been a kind of "breakdown" where myself and Allan kind of take off together, and then I bring in the bass (although the cue is not easy to identify here!) It's just go! Like riding waves - waves of inspiration. I don't really know how to really explain it or define exactly what the process is. It's more just intense interplay together, building and building upon what happens immediately before.
In a form sense it's open - free, but in pulse, and I'm actually feeling 4/4 - maybe difficult to tell, but true.
Cheers,
GH

Gary, to this day, IOU is one of my favourite (if not my absolute favourite) records as well as drum performances. This extends to the sound of your drums. I recall reading that you used Gretsch drums with black dots all around, as per Allan's suggestion. Did you use black dots on top and bottom, as well as on the snare drum and bass drum? I can't get enough of this record, even now (and I bought my first copy when it was originally released).
Keep up the great work dude!
Thanks,
Paul

Thank you indeed Paul, very kind.
Well I was 19 when we first started work on that album, and yes, being very much still under TW's wing at the time I was using the Gretsch set with black dots top and bottom. Even the kick drum was two full 22" black dots with a towel inside. It was interesting how close sometimes I could get to the Tony sound, but also what I find nice about the album in retrospect is how much of my own sound was also firmly there.. despite the heavy derivation of configuration I was using.
Goes to prove the old thing I guess. We each make an individual sound - the sound is in our hands. Wild!!
I had flu when it came time for these recording sessions, but I did my best on the tracks. I remember the reels with about three of the tracks got somehow lost, and the takes that made the album we had done again. (I'm still looking forward to hearing those originals, since they were later rediscovered and are all now actually in the hands of Allan.)
There's of course the original (song version of) "Water On The Brain" too, which never made it to the LP.. and there are a few takes of that. The particular one rough version I had on cassette is still (I think) up on my photos page here at Drummerworld - an mp3 titled "Allan Holdsworth 1980" studio track.
The album represents something big for me. I was given free reign to explore approaches to beats for the songs by Allan, and I was starting to take a lot of chances within the construction of them on that record - something I'd carry on doing through the course of the LPs we did after this one to more evident effect.
The whole relationship was so liberating for me. (Still is!!)
Allan gave me the chance to start to blossom as a musical participant in music via these recordings, and I love it that this album that this album is still around and the fact it continues to document that.
My very best wishes and thanks again.

Oh my God, I'll say! I love Tony's sound as much as the next guy, but your sound on this record is superb, and all yours man. Your touch, your tone, the timbre, it's all unique and immediately identifiable on this record especially.
I've never personally tried CS heads on both top and bottom, but I'm definitely going to give it a shot sometime soon. I think I'll go with the clear dots as opposed to the black dots. I've used black dots on top before and found them to sound great for a few days, and then kind of dead, whereas the clear dots tend to maintain their tone a bit longer. Maybe the black dots absorb too much light energy and deform from heat? I dunno....
I just checked out the version of Water on the Brain that you mentioned and it KILLS (although the vocals really don't belong... ha!). I really hope the rest of those newly discovered recordings get released someday.
Thanks a ton man. Your playing never ceases to inspire.

Hi Gary,
I just ordered the Level 42 Live in holland cd and will be interested to hear your take on all the songs! Did you play them with keeping the original drum tracks in mind or did you just play with a whole new take on the songs? I noticed there are a couple of tracks from "staring at the sun" in there which will also be interesting to hear.
All the best,
Tim
P.S. Any idea what Phil Gould is up to these days!?

Hi Tim,
Since you ordered the DVD already there's no point in me saying don't waste your money! It's nothing that hasn't been far, far better back in the 80's. It's not a good mix, the visuals aren't too good. Besides that, as with anything L42 oriented, I would say stick to the early records with Phil Gould. He was the best you're gonna get as far as the band goes. I did what I did over the years with the band, and as far as any of it is concerned if I can recommend anything featuring me with Mark and the guys the only one would be Live At The Apollo DVD (from 2003)
If you'd like to check out any present day actual "me" please wait a couple of months - new album coming. "Dirty & Beautiful", hopefully featuring the great Mark himself on one cut, John McLaughlin, Allan Holdsworth, Jimmy Johnson, Jerry Goodman, Jimmy Herring and plenty others.
It's a drum album!!!
Best to you Tim, and thanks for the question.

Waiting, Gary. Sounds more like a guitar album to me ; )...
I'll bet it'll be worth the wait. I hope it will echo Force Majure in some way, which in my opinion was mind blowing and way ahead its time. Will be nice to hear you with Jimmy Herring too. Have you played with him before?

Thanks Aydee, and I much appreciate the compliments.
It is a guitar album, and strong powerful jazz/rock album, of the kind I have not made anything like, especially as a drummer. It's not got much in common with the Force Majeure angle on things but I'm really pleased about the way it's coming along. It's very much a drum album, for sure.

I am a fan of your work with Allan Husband, too. Always nice when a great player takes the time to actually stick around on Drummerworld!
Since you're a very original player with a unique and identifiable style, I wanted to ask you who are or were your main influences, what shaped your way of playing? Does the fact that you're a serious keyboard player too have something to do with it as well?

Hi and thanks for writing in,
I'm only too pleased to hang around here from time to time and chat to anyone who may be interested! I think this is probably the best website where drummers can hang together!
Regarding my influences - (thanks for the nice words by the way) - I think you hit the nail on the head already. Many diverse people influenced me for all kinds of different reasons - John Von Ohlen for drama and power, people such as Keith Moon for sheer abandon and passion, Tony Williams for artistry, intelligence and poetry.. the list kind of goes on.. for days!! I took little bits from many of them, and together they are all involved in what I turned out to be as a drummer.. and am continuing to try and be. Absolutely no doubt the piano and keyboards and writing sides contribute massively to what I do with the drums and the whole approach.
It's great you are enjoying what we've done with Allan. My new, upcoming album features him very well, so I hope you may get to hear it.
My best regards to you and thanks again.

Hello Gary!
Thanks for all the inspiration you´ve provided through the years!
Can´t wait for your new album, Holdsworth, McLaughlin, Topping, Johnson (and you!) are some of my favourite musicians.
If I could just sneak in an equipment question or two...
1) On your (former) DW birch kit, did you have reinforcement rings, or were the shells "straight"?
2) Since Zildjian´s Special Recording Hi-hat isn´t available in the 10" size anymore,
are you considering an alternative, or have you simply stopped using an extra hi-hat?
Many thanks

Hi and thanks very much.
On your DW kit question I requested "straight" shells, indeed. The kit's certain companies tried to convince me to use (Tama included) in recent years) all got rejected and sent back! Can't stand reinforcement rings, in principal. They just work against everything about the way I make a sound.
To be honest I haven't used any additional Hi-Hat for some years. It was handy for certain things I did at the time, and it worked great when I was playing left hand lead a few years ago. I had some 12"s that worked good - even a pair of 13"s, which I still have, was enough of a contrast to work I found.
Best wishes,

Hi Canyonero, thanks for your enquiry.
Actually seeing as I was considerably misled and ripped off royally on the concept of that video - the content sucked and I did not have an opportunity to approve it, and the planned informative content never got done etc - I am really not sorry to not have it available on DVD. I would presume this would be because it sold miserably, and I'm glad it did! It's nothing I feel even remotely proud of.
There's much better performance footage of me around and about YouTube, and I have a plan at some time to see the project through properly one day.
However, it's always nice when anybody's enjoyed anything we do as drummers, and I'm glad you found something to like on there.
Thanks for asking, but no, it's not available on DVD and if I have anything to do with it, it never will!
Best wishes,

Hi Gary,
I was curious how you came to be involved with L42 back in 89/90. Had you and Alan Murphy worked together before or were you 'recruited' separately, as it were?
It's interesting to read your take on your involvment with the band. I can certainly appreciate that it must have been difficult coming into an established band like that when another drummer had indelibly marked their style on the music. You say that L42 really isn't your 'thing' nor is it the best example of what your are about muscially. I have, however, brought many friends and family along to various L42 shows over the last 10-15 years who weren't that familiar with the music and thus had no preconceptions about how it might/should sound. They were universally very complimentary about your drumming and the sheer effort you put into the show. It's a shame you aren't available for the tour this year.
Thanks and best wishes,
Neil

Hi Neil,
Thanks for your posting.
I was asked by Mark King if I'd like to join in around 1987, I think just after the two brothers Phil and Boon Gould left. I couldn't then as I was in the States with Allan Holdsworth, but I did join up in 1988. Mark also didn't have a guitarist so I suggested a friend of mine (which didn't work out), and it was then Alan Murphy was recruited.
I appreciated your comments here a lot, but no I don't think Level 42 ever was my particular strength. (I would point more towards the many years involvement with Holdsworth, or the relatively new one with John McLaughlin, or my solo output if someone was interested in what I regard my real strengths to be.) I worked hard at it though and tried to get it as good as I could.
With regard to how you felt seeing the band with me in it on those performances, well.. you were hearing me do it as well as I could accomplish doing it. I never put in less than 100% to any playing situation, so, your compliment is very nice but I regard it my job to play strong and as solid as possible.
I regard the guy who's playing right now in the band to be a great choice though. Pete Ray Biggin. And from the feedback I'm getting or have read, he doesn't look as if he's proving a disappointment to anyone!!
Once again my thanks to you Neil, and best wishes.

Hi Aydee,
It's John who makes a suggestion about which tunes live I get to play a little drums on. I'm invited to go up spontaneously though.. in a sort of percussionists capacity. Sometimes I may do that in various bass solos or guitar solos.
On the band's To The One album I was given provision to play two tracks as principal drummer, and I thought they came out quite well. They were really enjoyable to do.
Thanks again.

Hi again Gary,
I've just come across the fantastic clip on YouTube of you playing with the Syd Lawrence Orchestra way back in 1977 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lhdi-F_aO6M). How did that opportunity come about for you?

Thanks Neil,
Syd Lawrence and my father went way back together in the Northern Dance Orchestra. They kept in touch long afterwards, and around the time Syd needed a drummer my dad and him were in contact. My father worked at that time as Musical Executive at Yorkshire Television and when Syd called him for advice he suggested he should give me an audition. I prepped and did a lot of homework, and the "audition" turned out to be a concert! What I lacked in finesse I guess I made up for in spirit and determination nd Syd took me on the day after.
Yeah, it was a chance thing. I was lucky. One of those breaks that come along every once in a while. I was fortunate to get a gig like that at 16 and it taught me a lot and provided me with invaluable experience. Syd was a great bandleader and a great musician, and I tried my hardest to do that job the best I could.
Thanks again.

I have been a big admirer and fan of yours for quite some time now and look forward to seeing you near my home in Raleigh, NC (Lincoln Theatre). I know there are no guarantees but I sure would like to say hello to you and Mark before/after the show. I've met John on several occasions and he seemed genuinely glad to meet talk to me. It is musicians such as yourself that have inspired me to reach for the stars - Thank you and see you soon.

I shall look forward to hopefully getting to meet you in Raleigh too. As ever with these gigs though, we know hardly anything about the set up of the venues and times etc., but I'm sure we'll work it out. We're a friendly band, and most often than not we're right out after the show meeting people anyway - John signs albums etc - we all do, plus there'll be my new album on sale there too, featuring John, Allan Holdsworth, Jan Hammer and many others, so I'm excited about that.
See you there, much fulfillment with your drumming and thanks again!

After reading this thread, I find your comments on Level 42 interesting, in that you don't feel that work was necessarily your best. But man, it was still great! Rock solid grooves played with great feel and mainstream conservatism.
I caught a show of yours with AH in Atlanta some years ago, and I'll never forget watching you chug a beer in the middle of your solo while keeping a wall of sound going with one hand and the kick! Fricken awesome!

Gary Husband!! One of the best!! Which prompts me to ask: Why do you think your decade (1950-1960) produced so many stellar players???? Was there some magical soup being served back then? Can I have a sip??? Hahahaha - Seriously though, what the hell was going on back then??? Now, I could care less about "top 10 lists" but it is interesting to note that this particular decade accounts on average for more then half of most "top ten best drummers ever" lists.

Ok, phew... I was going to have to elevate you to Universal Drum God if you did that... But no worries, you are still a Drum God Extraordinaire!
But I do have a specific question for you Gary, and you may not want to answer publicly- but I do accept PM's. :)
You have recorded in a zillion different circumstances, with a bunch of different engineers. I would like to know what recording(s) of your drums you like the most. What sound really gets it for you. Is it the upfront sound of the Level 42 stuff, or the more roomy sound of the live stuff?
But even more specifically, for the recorded sound you really love, WHAT was it do you feel that played a major role in the sound, besides having a great kit, well tuned with nice heads?
And I am talking things like rooms, mics, pres, PLACEMENT, processing...
I guess what I want to know is what has worked best for you. Is there a standard formula of equipment and room you tend to go for first? Maybe shed some light on this for those of us that never made it to world class recording, so to speak. If it's too much to deal with, forget it, but any tips or tricks will be VERY much appreciated.

Thanks Andy... and to you!
If you go to my website Homepage there are a few snippets there for the moment. (They weren't the eventual mixes, but there's a bit of flavour of it all there.)

Best wishes,
GHGot it Gary, & just given the snippets a good listen through my reference stuff. Ok, you can tell it isn't final mix/mastered yet, but there's some lovely timbres flying around in there. I especially like the heavy sub presence in the tom/bass parts near the end of the compilation (the fast toms to bass drum run). Very much looking forward to the finished item!
Would love to hear my thin stave shells in that context :)

Thanks.
Actually I think on this album, certain tracks feature the best recorded drum sound I've ever achieved... at least in my opinion!
Hope you like it too if you get to hear it.
