Are they're double bass pedals really worth $1000?!?!?!? Has anyone ever played with them?!?! Is it just because they're a highend drum company that they can sell things so high?!?!

Quality stuff and its made in Germany hence the premium.

I haven't tried the double, but I have the Giant Step single which I have used for over 3 years now. It's built really well, is very smooth, has good feel and the docking station is either a blessing or a curse. It makes for quick setup when the docking station is already in place so that's good, but otherwise it's a pain to change to another bass drum as you will need an allen wrench to do so.
As for your original question - is it worth $1000 ? I would say no. I like my pedal and I think it compares well to other chain driven like DW 5000, but isn't worth all the extra dough. I've always wondered why Sonor prices their pedals so high. It's a bit ridiculous. There's no way it's worth double what you pay for a DW 9000.
