This is an odd question about a particular type of drum I've seen in two separate venues. The first time was at PASIC in 2007, when Chung Ang percussion, a traditional Korean group played one night. There were several types of drums being worn, as well as a couple of guys carrying incredibly loud hand cymbals. Anyway, a couple of guys carried double-headed drums on slings. These drums were played with traditional group, and the way they were hung, the players often used both heads. The right hand stayed on the top head, but the left would switch from top to bottom head, more for visual effect than audio.

I recently saw the Japanese taiko group Kodo when they played in DC. They had a few guys carrying nearly identical drums on slings, which they also played with the left hand on both heads.

So what is this thing? Is it Japanese? Korean? and what's it called? I enjoy marching percussion, and this thing was tuned quite high and played much like a marching snare.
