How to use a AKG D112 (Bassdrum)?

Hey,

i got a Gretsch Catalina Club Jazz drumset - with a 18" Bassdrum without (!!) hole in the resonant head.

now i want to put a AKG D112 on my bassdrum - should i cut a hole into the head or not?

Well its more of what sound you would like...a boomy resonant sound (without hole) or more attack (with hole).

that depends on the musical style i'm playing... i think for jazz i would prefer the "boomy" sound - for pop / funk and stuff like that i need more attack.

can i put the mic besides the hole to get the boomy sound out of that drum (with hole)?

Not really. I would buy another head, and have one ported. That way, you have a head you can switch out for each recording style.

You could also try miking the intact head dead-center. You get a good amount of attack from there, but it still has the OOOOOoooooommmmmm. If you want to dry it up a little bit, but still have the warm and full sound, you could try using a felt strip.

I could be wrong here, but in the instance of jazz, wouldn't the mic placement be outside the front head? The best way to use a mic in the bass drum is with a MAYEA adapter. This puts the mic inside the drum and gets it close to the point of impact. Also, no mic stands to trip over or set up and haul around.
