Hey there, does anyone have any information/sound files/transcriptions of New Orleans drumming from the 1900-1920's? I looked around drummerworld and found a few mp3 files but none of them had drums in them. (I know they had trouble recording drums back then, particularly the bass drum.)

Thanks :)

i recommend you check out the new orleans "preservation hall jazz band". this band is dedicated to playing old school new orleans jazz in the way it was played originally. they've been around for a long time and are still very active. the advantage of them is they have a bunch of recordings that were made recently so you can hear the drums a lot better than on those scratchy old recordings.

I had the pleasure of seeing the Preservation Hall Jazz Band in New Orleans several years ago. They are living history.

Check out the book: "New Orleans Jazz and Second Line Drumming" It traces the drumming styles of Jazz from second line up to modern styles and includes a cd.

that's awesome! what i like about them is they aren't some copy or modern interpretation of new orleans jazz, they *are* new orleans jazz. they're the real deal.

That's a good help, thanks for that. I also found some example in the Drumclinic section of the website. Also a big help :)
