In various songs that I love such as Everlong by Foo Fighters, the common element is the roll on the hi hats to keep a sustained sound. My issue is that I fatigue rapidly or begin to play sloppy. I noticed that in my first attempt to play the beat that I would use my arms which I know is a big no now lol; I know use my wrist.

Does anyone have any tips or advice for training for this type of playing since the hi hats don't give much rebound? Should I just try and build some endurance by just keeping a sustained sound for as long as I can? Maybe lower the hi hat stand so I don't have my arms as high?

Yes.

You've just got to work up to it. Don't expect anything to come easy, but be grateful when it does...

Hi Abyysul, by roll do you mean like a constant measure on the hats like a 16th note beat- 1+e+&+ah 2+3+&+ah etc-

I know personally its a work in progress for me as I tend to hit them too hard due to the lack on rebound and to my ears I sound too robotic and uptight- I want it to sound relaxed etc but that takes time..

I'm also trying to remember that song in my head and see where Taylor H is playing the hats.....? coming up blank at the mo- might need to plug in the ipod-

Like most thigns with this damned instrument!!!! it takes time and practice lol!!!

If it came easy- would we do it?

Here is a tip for increasing speed, endurance and control.

Practice the HH roll starting with your weak hand. Also, accent the first of every four 16th notes. Gradually build up the speed. If you do this properly for a short time you should notice a dramatic improvement in your playing when you switch back to starting on your stronger hand.

Good luck.

Ya, I am improving with my hi-hat roll, but now I have to incorporate the snare drum hit. After that is the drum beat. When I go to hit the snare, I lose consistence in my sustained sound once I go for the snare, but I'm sure I just need more practice.

Hmmm.. Depending on the sound I want, sometimes I will play with my fingers or play the 2-stroke moeller with each hand (accent accent normal normal). I also fatigue if I use all wrist for fast 16ths or 32nds on the hi hat and it will eventually start to sound sloppy. For an added challenge, get complete command of choke/slide placement while playing fast on the hi hat (e's, and's, a's, etc)

You're posts are kind of annoying me no offence. Yeah just stop posting and practice your roll to a metronome on a pillow for five hours a day.
