OK so I got this book last night and was reading through it. I'm really interested in Riley's section on how to read lead sheets. Right now I'm reading comping exercises written out in triplet form but would like to make the transition to the real-world version (finally). But I don't get the math of "swinging the 8th notes."

In one measure he shows a little comp consisting of one eighth-note rest and one eighth note, to add up to one quarter note. In the bar next to it he shows that the note played should sound like the "let" of the triplet notes in the swing beat.

But, what if you want to have someone play the "trip" of the triplet? what does it look like with swinging the eighths? I hear that figure played almost as much as the other pattern.

That is written out as a triplet, with the second and third parts of the triplet denoted by rests. Go to the next section of the book with triplet comping patterns. You'll see how it's notated.

Ok thanks, I didn't notice that. Makes sense.

Actually, I just realized that my answer to your question is incorrect. Well, sort of. The notation I gave you is technically correct, but in the Riley book a triplet with only the "trip" being played is notated as simply a quarter note.

If you want to see what the middle part of the triplet looks like, notated, you just need to turn the pages until you get to Comp Example 2. You'll see it notated by itself, with the first part of the triplet, and with the last part of the triplet.
