when he is using the single handed roll, it sounds just as loud (or almost) as loud as the other drums
even when playing soft, if find the sound from a single a handed roll to never really be loud enough to fit in a solo. any tips?

1: Johnny is not a hard hitter, so he doesn't have to bring the volume of his one-handed rolls up very far.
2: He is also mic'ed most of the time, so he may be able to get away with more with some compression and careful EQ'ing and mic placement
3: Most importantly: He's had years and years and years of extremely solid, smart and motivated practice. The man is essentially a machine!

Well, if you tune your drum and make it sound louder, your normal hits will get louder too, so the difference is still the same between the roll and the normal hit.
There are no shortcuts to anything. The guys holding drum clinics and releasing instructional material have been practicing all this stuff for years or decades, and practice for hours and hours every single day. It's not magic, it's math: Skill = Practice * Time

Well, now you have a new goal to practice towards ;-)
If you're serious about Johnny Rabb's technique, he has several books out, including one devoted entirely to his freehand technique called "The Official Freehand Technique By Johnny Rabb". He also has a DVD out called "30 days to better hands".

"30 days to better hands" is not worth of your money, it sucks!!!! (and there is nothing about freehand technique)
The book about freehand is cool.
He also got gr8 book called "JUNGLE DRUM N BASS for the acustic drum set"
if you are interested in linear and unison jungle grooves transcriptions, multiple snare jungle groove, but there is also not much about freehand technique, just one page:(

Mayer covers a lot of what he does in his DVD on technique. Most of what he's doing is not all that hard to do. Doing it well, is really difficult.
