Hey guys! Just did a mega re-skin/new snare wire fitting.

My problem is not really the tuning, but the reaction of my snare to other drums: it's HORRIBLE. I have a Yamaha Oak Custom 14" x 5" Snare. I just put a coated Emperor on the top and an Evans Hazy 300 on the bottom plus some new Puresound 'Blaster' snare wires (20 stand). Snare sounds great! However, it just hisses terribly, for about 3 seconds if I hit the first tom (again a Yamaha oak custom w/ emperor coated on top and emperor clears on the bottom - 10" x 7"). That tom is about 2 cm away from the snare. Any ideas/tricks how to stop this?

Thanks guys!

Bob Gatzen goes very in depth on this issue in these videos.

What Gatzen didn't mention in these video's is that you can loosen the 4 lugs surrounding the snare wires a bit, that will make the head directly underneath the snare wires less responsive. This affects buzz sustain but does not affect the sensitivity of your snare, i.e. you'll still get the sound you want out of your snare.
Snare buzz also decreases if you increase the snare tension but that may not be the way to go as your snare will lose sensitivity that way. If you're a heavy hitter and don't play much ghostnotes it would be okay though.
