snare heads?

im going to gc today to get a new snare head. i was wondering which head you guys play and what do you reccomend? i play alot of rock and some funk as well. obviously looking into remo/evans/aquarian. which types from those brands are good and worth the price?

Most heads are about the same price. Don't worry about that.

Just to name a couple of famous heads, Evans HD Genera Dry, Evans Ec Reverse Dot, Evans Power Center Reverse Dot, Remo Coated Ambassador.

I don't know. The list goes on and on. for the most part all heads sound similar.

You can never go wrong with a coated ambassador. That said, I have been moving most of my snares to a coated Emperor. Still gets a good crack, is a bit drier for studio applications and I have found it helps reduce sympathetic vibrations from toms. I have stuck with coated ambs only on snares I tune REALLY high.

Yeah, sometimes I like to climb up onto my roof to tune my snare as well.

if you had to go with evans definitely go with the PC reverse dot. be sure to get the reverse and not the regular dot

A Genera Dry makes a great sound, but it's extremely dry and hardly rings.

Right now I'm using a Controlled Sound and love it, it has a perfect balance of warmth, crack and ring.

I use the Evans reverse dot for the batter and the Evans Hazy 300 on the resonant side. I tend to crank the snare and these heads sound fantastic. I use Evans heads on all my drums, except the bass. That honor belongs to Aquarian.

well i ended up getting the aquarian hi energy and a remo ambassador for the reso. hope it sounds good!

Hi-energy is a great head. I'm really into my black suede Emperor X (just called Black X) right now. Sounds pretty good in all tuning ranges.

I've never actually tried Aquarian on any drums but the bass. I love their bass heads so much, hands down my favorite. I have used Evans for several years now and honestly never really looked at anything else just because I knew what I wanted and Evans had it. I've never been a Remo fan, which I learned from my high school jazz band. I might have to give Aquarians a go around on this next head change

well, I have two snares which are a tama and pearl. A pearl when tuned and tightened right gives a good rock sound. GC also has used drums in great condition which is where I got my tama. I love snares with a good pop or snap. I know Pearl snares aren't bad priced and are worth it. You may wanna also check out Pork -Pie percussion they have nice snares but are a bit expensive!!

This is sort of about drum heads though.... teehee.

But yeah, Pork Pie isn't that expensive and it depends on the models from Pearl and Tama. It's going to be arguable nevertheless.
