Hi, I'm fred and started taking lessons from last september.
yesterday I bought the Jojo Mayer dvd, but there is something I dont get: the hit after the rebounce in general.
Jojo says for instannce: you hit the head (first stroke) and let the stick bounce up again and the let the stick fall and the head again without any assistance of the fingers or whatever. And then he shows it playing double strokes (also with the moeller) and he can go real fast.
Now my problem is that when I hit the head, first stroke, and let the stick bounce back up, it goes quite high and before it goes down again a lot of time has elapsed (to much time to play fast doubles)????
when the stick bounces up do I have to pushed it down? with quite some presure on the fulcrum?
thanks

I personally havent seen this dvd, but i would suggest trying to keep fulcrum pressure normal, because if you put to much pressure on it, it make work once or twice, but in the long run it will stuff your technique up. Maybe try searching google for this answer. Tho, im sure one of DW's Technique experts will tell you :). Gud Luck

Hi
Try it very slow...say quarter note at 50BPM. Denis

you have to learn to control the bounce. you should be able to make the two strokes as near or as far apart from each other as you want. If you use french grip you can control it with your thumb, if you use german (like me) you can use the part in between your thumb and finger. i hope this is clear enough, i'm not exactly sure how to explain it very well

First of all, if you grip the stick like I do, or similarly, all you have to do is shorten the gap between your fingers and your palm to play faster. Because the stick will have less room to bounce, the rebound will be faster the closer you get to closing your fingers to your palm.
If you want ultimate stick control and great technique, I highly recommend getting the ebook Stick Technique by Jim McCarthy.
go to www.sticktechnique.com right now and see if your interested!
It teaches the grip that I'm talking about (matched grip)
If you don't understand when he says "the one thing you need to be fantastic at playing drums," he is talking about TECHNIQUE.
I suggest you watch jojo again and pay attention to his snare height, how far away he sits from the snare, the height o his hands over the snare and the distance his hands are from the snare. Having the DVD myself, I know that he has shown you how to find the fulcrum for your stick and how to hold the stick in your hand and what the position of the stick should be when it hits the head..
Since you've seen the dvd, you should have a pretty good estimate of how hard to hit the snare so I don't imagine you're trying to bury the stick into the drum. That only leaves the above and your difficulty is in your execution of the stroke.
If you are completely new to what Mayer demonstrates this entire process is probably going to be awkward for a while but observation should lead you to the answer. If it doesn't, put a clup up of what you are dealing with.
