View Full Version : Double bass pain!

Hi, I'm by no means an expert and this may well be as a result of flawed technique or setup but...
Basically with my double bass pedal in its current state I often find the slave beater hits the top of my foot/shin or lower leg as it recoils. This can be painful as the beater is made from hard plastic and can obviously be moving quite fast at times! Obviously this would never be a problem with the single or leading pedal as the corresponding foot moves in synch with the beater.
So really i'm curious to know if this is just me?? If so what am I doing wrong!
Cheers

When your feet aren't on the pedal are the slave and main beater sitting equally parallel? With equal tension, pedal height, and identical beater settings it shouldn't be striking your foot.

Wait, so you are using a double pedal, and the slave beater is hitting your left leg? I don't see how that is feasible.

I have that problem. When I'm playing hard sometimes either of the pedals can nail my leg, usually it's my left one. I position the beater closer to the bass drum so it's easier to get a beat and doesn't hit my leg as much.

If your feet remain on the pedals at all times and the beater is hitting your shin then you probably have the beater throw set too far back.

This happened to me when I was a beginner, but also the pedal was too loose, so it would throw right back into my foot.

I have a very low-tech solution to this: my foot is only half-way up the footplate when I play. Never got hit by a beater so far... :)
