View Full Version : What exactly do I need for recording?

I have a set of mics (and cables) that will cover the majority of my set but I'm not sure what else I need exactly.

I'd be probably connecting whatever device to my Mac laptop to record into Garageband. I don't know whether a PA system can get the job done (I know that that's primarily used to project the sound) or it's some other device entirely.

I am quite the drum recording noob so any help would be great.

Thanks in advance.

Does your Macbook have a firewire port?
If so, the easiest solution would be to buy a firewire interface that allows you to connect your mic cables into your computer through the interface.
Then you record (I'm assuming you know how to use Garage band, because I don't)

Click on this link and then read posts 10 & 12 from M.F.B. He's quite knowledgable...

You can use a mixer PA if it has a computer output like a USB port. Souncraft, Alesis, Peavey and others make cheap usb mixers and if you alrady have a mac book, mics and cables that's all you need and the mixer can be used for live applications too.

If you don't need something to do double duty as a live mixer, just get an interface, either USB/ Firewire/etc. Most of the guys here on the forum use Presonus interfaces like the fp10 but there is a huge selection of these types of devices on the market.
