check out this video of me playing along to this George Kollias track...Ive been working on this for a few weeks now. I like how it turned out even though the sound isn't great, i at least mic'd the kick drums. thanks for watching.

The open handed playing just amazes me. So much opportunity there. Great job! Not my particular flavor of music, but your style of playing is very intriguing to me. I look forward to more videos.

Incredible speed too!!

thanks for the great comments, i always appreciate your input! I really tried to get all the parts right with good transitions, i decided to go with a triplet/samba/galloping bass drum pattern instead of the standard bossa nova beat and I also incorporated press rolls and double strokes as well as some syncopated accents on my chopper/china bell/ride cymbals during the first riff....the goal being to layer as much rhythm as possible while still keeping the groove solid and interesting. A few of the accents during the blast beat are a little off, some are slightly behind the percussive guitar riff which ended up sounding ok. I think the next videos will be some slower open-handed groove ideas and then also a cover of Nile's "essential salts", that song is such a great exercise in moving around the kit...i'll try to get some better sound next time.

Ok well I didn't win anything for this "contest" thing George had, but no big deal...winning wasn't the point for me, its just a good opportunity to compose some drums to someone elses' music.

So what do you think of this version I came up with? too much blast? Feel free to criticize or comment on my playing or the video quality itself...some advice on how to get better sound in future videos would really help me out. I could try recording all the drums fully mic'd on audio only and then adding that to the video after muting the internal mic from the camera, would this be the best way to go?

Couldn't you just sync the audio right? :P It's all messy. I just can't listen to it because of that. but it seemed like you kept a decent time. Can't tell..

I had some trouble getting it to line up...that cymbal cresendo thing made it somewhat difficult so I got it a close as I could. I'm still fairly new to doing video...I'll try tweaking that, but otherwise it sounds messy because of the lack of mics on the kit. Its only the kick drums being mic'd and i think the camera just couldn't handle the extra volume from the PA, so its inevitably a little muddy. I've listened to the drums only and i think the timing is pretty close, maybe a few missed beats during the blast section. Do you think the audio is slightly ahead of the video? that was my thought on second glance.

However, I spoke too soon, george said that he would send me a copy of his DVD...he is so incredibly generous, and a phenomenal drummer...Nile rules!!! I'm really looking forward to the new album.
