Man I sounded like crap today. I just play for fun and recently been playing KISS tunes. But today was dreadful. I was nice and limber, felt that way before I sat down anyway, worked on some warm-ups then put the headphones on. Tried Hard Luck Woman first. That was alright then I went Mr. Speed. I didn't worry about the chops just the beat. I don't know, just felt that today was one of them days. Anybody ever felt that way? Think I'll take a break for a few days. Just thought I'd share that.

Sometimes I feel like that too. I just can't play well and I lose my passion. It just feels like I'm banging on stuff sometimes. But it only happens every once in a while.

There are chops in Mr. Speed? j/k

Yep, there are those days.

Have you ever felt like crap and wound up have an awesome session?

Well I guess there aren't any chops proper in that song but yeah I have had days where I felt like nothing and presto, I ended up having a good practice. I guess I had the bar raised too high for myself today...no worries.

Everyone has off days. Push through them with as good an attitude as you can muster. I believe that it is in these times where the most progress is made.

It sucks when it feels worthless to play. I've had that feeling a lot recently kinda...I don't know why. It is usually burn outs but it's been going on for some time now...dunno why. It's wearing off though :D I'm getting back into it!

When I have "One of Them Days" I always blame my bass player! I apologize to him the next day. Bass players are good that way. It doesn't work with lead players, keyboard players, or singers! Bass players are resilient! They are truly the drummers best friend!

All the time.....Like I don't have a bad day. I'll have a bad week or even a bad month. And then there are other nights when i feel i could play anything you throw at me. Weird how things work out.

I felt I had a bad audition yesterday...it was not really an audition to fill an empty drum seat in an existing band, but me and my guitarist are looking to start a second gig with a girl singer and a new bass player.(80's cover as opposed to 90's that we are doing now-but are currently bass less)

So these new musicians come by to see if we have something, and my playing just felt off for most of the jam...until the last 4 or 5 songs.

My excuse was I was up for 20 hours prior(12 hour work shift and other things)

The bass player said we have potential but need work...so I guess it went OK....the singer was too timid...so he could have been talking about her...me...or both.

I think we all go through that. (See my signature).
But here's some advice: don't wait days to play again. Do it ASAP! You know, get right back on the old horse, as they say...
There are days when I'm so fluid, I can play anything I can think of. Then there are days I feel like a beginner. Most of the time it's somewhere in between. Ebb and flow, my friend!

Thank you and youre right. Don't take a vacation from get back to it. I was so frustrated after practicing, whenever I'm behind the kit I call it practice. But I'm in no hurry, there is no time limit and it is the hobby that I have always wanted to take up. Truly a dream come true having a drum set.

You'll bounce back. We all have those days. I just finished my first tour ever, and there were some shows towards the end of the month-long trip where I just did not even feel like looking at my drums, much less going up there and playing. Its like working out though, some days you just don't feel like it, but once you've finished playing and you're walking away you feel 100 times better.

I think it's like anything else. You have good days and bad days. The trick is to not get too bummed out about it. Sometimes the dragon wins, so to speak. Take a breather then get back practicing again as soon as you can.

At my last band practice I dropped my sticks about a dozen times..........I'll be back at band practice tomorrow and things will be different. You take the rough and the smooth!

"Drummer's block:" The number one cure in my book would be buying new gear. Even just a new splash cymbal, a new drum head, or rearranging your drums really helps.

A really great drummer (http://drummerworld.com/drummers/Rick_Gratton.html) once told me that if you're having one of those days, you're probably just not challenging yourself - Or something along those lines. Was he ever right though!

So don't throw in the towel. Instead of playing the same old grooves that make you feel as if you're not going anywhere, try working on something new. From there you will come up with all kinds of new ideas and before you know it, your bad day becomes a breakthrough day.

This could be some of the best drumming advice I've ever gotten. So don't forget it.

Great advice!

Another thing that I just thought of, that's helped me out a lot, is just watching drummers on Youtube. Good, bad, pro, whatever. Just watch drum videos. All different styles, everything. After watching about 10 videos, and really paying attention to the drummer's style, groove, beats, fills, etc, get on the kit. You'll feel yourself trying to imitate what you saw, which usually leads to creativity. It's kind of like designers look at other's works for inspiration.

I practiced Friday before I went to work. Been watching some grooves and I worked on a different beat, I challenged myself. It was abit choppy but I managed to pull it together. I'm still after the elusive triplet beat, it's elusive to me anyhow for the time being. I love watching the Vinnie Appice videos and that beat he throws down is by far the coolest rock beat ever. The Jack Dejohnnette video is another I pay attention to. I wonder what the tension is set to on Vinnie's pedal. But overall today was NOT one of them days, and that is a good thing.

There are days when I play as steady as can be without a metronome, but there's also days where I can't keep time to save my own life. Especially my right foot has been a little flaky lately. It's really no problem unless it happens at a gig.
