i feel like i don't get enough rebound from the beaters on my iron cobra. it feels really flat. i have change my batter head on my bass drum and tuned it to my liking, it sounds great but i also don't feel like i'm getting enough volume out of it.
what i was thinking was those ball beaters that john blackwell uses. they look promising.
any suggestions?

Beaters don't have that much to do with rebound. You could try a heavier beater with more spring tension for a little more "springy" feel.
Mostly it has to do with your batter head tension and whether you have a port or not. If you have a ported reso you might try an unported one if your miking situation allows it.
Many guys tune their batters so slack they have essentially no rebound at all. If you have your batter loose and your reso tighter, you might try reversing the roles to get more bounce off your batter head.
