A newly written tune. The drums are just recorded with one mic.

This one's for all Toto haters! :D

http://www.live-drums.com/tss/mp3/dontwantme_draft002.mp3

Enjoy!

Don’t Want Me
(Yttergren)

Don’t walk away
Cause I need some extra time
So much to say to you
I got a lot of things on my mind

You always put the work between us
There was always something else for you
And now you’re blaming me
The easy thing to do
You touched me then left me behind

I don’t want to go
I don’t want to stay
I don’t really know anymore
I gave it all and now it’s gone
Don’t want you to leave me
Don’t walk away
Just hold me, please don’t let me fall
I gave you my heart and soul but now
You don’t want me at all

So here we stand
We both know this is the end
My last demand of you
I don’t know how to be just a friend

Well, forever wouldn’t last forever
So baby, this is good-bye

I don’t want to go
I don’t want to stay
I don’t really know anymore
I gave it all and now it’s gone
Don’t want you to leave me
Don’t walk away
Just hold me, please don’t let me fall
I gave you my heart and soul but now
You don’t want me at all

So now you’re blaming me
The easy thing to do
You touched me then left me behind

Nice to hear new material from you. The song is very Toto-esque, as you already pointed out. Catchy :-).

The hihats sound to bright to me, but the rest of the recording is great, as far as my knowledge goes.

Wow, this definitly leaves me speechless!!

I`ve never known that unconscious modesty can be that extreme. Seriously, this song is awesome. Your drumming is magnific as usual and the sound is brilliant - literally.
Can you tell us more about the mic and its position? Or did you record with more than one? I`d expect that. =)

Hi Karl!

Glad you like the tune. Actually wrote it Saturday and recorded it yesterday. It was a rush job to get a demo sent off. The drums are recorded via the Zoom H4 recorder. It is placed snare drum height on a chair approx. 10ft in front of the kit, pointing in between snare and kick. I then use Fairchild and 1176 LN compressors and SIR plate on it. I also scoop quite a lot midrange out. I usually use the one mic option for quick demos, and sometimes the result is almost as good as 15 separate channels ;) What you do get is the drums sounding like a homogenous unit, which sometimes can be difficult with multi channels.

Cheers a lot!

Man, if this was a 'quick' demo that you actually wrote on day one and recorded on day two the impact of the song is far greater. You are very very good at what you do, would you mind sharing with us something you consider very good/finished, and not just a quick demo?

Thanks for the kind words. Well, since I usually write with the intention of not being the artist myself, my songs tend to end up in a draft stage, and then I pass them on. Reason I post them on various forums is to get an idea if they work or not.

I wish I would take more time to carefully construct the parts Im recording but I am quite lazy and usuallly just record one time, just on instinct (there are a lot of warts if you listen for them, well maybe not the drums but....). If I overwork a song I easily get bored with it which is another reason to get someting down quickly, otherwise you may end up throwing away a perfectly good song just cause you get fed up.

But, I'm more of a creator than a closer i.e. I come up with loads of ideas but don't really like to spend hours mixing a song. I know my mixes will never sounds as good as the real pros so I'll leave it to them, whenever possible.

Cheers

Really nice sound you've got going there, good job :).

you say you get bored if you overwork your songs well why not work song before you get bored move onto another and maybe another after then go back to the first and tweak things? just a thought could get your interest back into the song after not do anything to do it for a while.

Peter! Good to hear from you again. Your 'groove machine' credentials are well established already, but what I specially liked on this cut was your fills. Very tasteful very 'under..'. Me likes!

I really loved that occasionally accented 2 on the hi hats in the groove.. nice.

.........Thats heck of a demo too.

Toto? whats a toto? ; )

Thanks a lot mate! I really can't take credit for the fills or playing....it's all Jeff Porcaro and how he would have approached a song like this...he really liked this type of groove and mastered it like no one else. For the beat I was inspired by "Make Believe" from Toto 4 and "Don't Chain My Heart" from Toto's Kingdom Of Desire (Jeff's last with the band)

A slight bump.

"Perhaps sire, if it's not too late, we could interest you in our old-fashioned Staffordshire plate?"

Really phenomenal playing and recording.... thoroughly impressed and I enjoyed the song as well!

I am VERY interested to hear more about the recording method using the Zoom H4.... I don't really understand the "Fairchild" and "1176 LN compressor" and "SIR plate" jargon. Can you explain a little bit about what that is and means and, of course, what it does to the final output? And then, does it go straight into a computer and what program do you use? It must mean something cause I have not heard another Zoom H4 sound nearly that clean.

Again, fantastic writing and playing!

I look forward to some recording feedback and help.

Although I don't dig Toto too much (except for Jeff of course) I have to say that all the stuff you post here is among the very best that is posted by forum members here.

Your playing is very tastefull and you have great time and groove - that's what's all about in my book. You also have some nice chops I can hear behind your playing. Great.

Thanks for the really nice comments.

I recorded the stereo drum track via the Zoom H4 as described earlier. I then imported the stereo file into Cubase SX. I then recorded all other instruments and vocals and mixed it all together. In Cubase, on the stereo drum mix I first roll off some bottom end using a Waves EQ. I then apply the UAD-1 compressors (Fairchild & 1176) in series to get the colour and punch I want. I then scoop out some mid-range using UAD EQ. Last I put some reverb on the whole kit using the SIR Impulse reverb plug-in.

I am by no means very good at mixing but this method gives me a good enough result for a quick demo.

Cheers

That's awesome. Do you do all the parts? Vox/keys/bass etc? Or is it part of a band project?

I was going to ask if you used reverb, but i just noticed you said you did. I felt the hats were a little too bright and washy in the mix. I liked the snare, but felt there might be a little too much reverb.

It does fit the style of the music however, so if thats what you're going for its great.

That keys/piano part at the start is definitely reminiscent of Toto IV (which I now have to go and listen to). Great work.

This is good music (I like Toto)! But I agree with frank: the cymbals are a little harsh.
