Hello,

Basically here is my problem, I have been playing drums since I was 6/7 I am now 20
And due to poor teaching I never understood the importance of rudiments now
I am trying to master the single stroke and double stroke roll because I know these two rudiments make up a large amount of the remaining rudiments.

I currently have my rolls at 160/165bpm I just need to know how to practise??
For example once I reach 165bpm I struggle to lock it down for a 2/3min how do I get over this bpm?? Is it just a question of repeating that bpm? And when do I move up another 5bpm?? Would someone give me a detailed practice routine that they have had success with that I can use to get my rolls faster.

Cheers Graeme

You're on the right lines man.

You need to build ENDURANCE before you tackle speed. If you can get your rolls up to 160bpm, maybe try about 10-15 minutes non-stop at 150bpm or less. Try this everyday for a week getting things as clean as possible with zero tension. You should start to feel a little burn during the last few minutes. Any more than that, and you should probably lower the tempo. To quote John Riley, after a week or two of this daily exercise, you should now have a good idea of what you can do, and actually be able to do it. Now knock the tempo up 5-10bpm higher than your 'endurance tempo', and do exactly the same thing. Try to get things as clean and effortless as possible, for as long as possible. Then knock up the tempo - only when you are ready. You will know only for yourself when you are really ready to get faster.

It terms of cleanness, as I'm sure you're no doubt aware, be critical of stick heights, velocity, tension, and wrist & fingers & elbows to make sure they're all doing their jobs correctly, in a way you don't harm yourself.

Good luck.
Lloyd.
