View Full Version : What's the difference between Son Montuno and Mambo?

I have a college drum audition coming up and for Latin rhythms it says to play a Mambo and a Son Montuno, etc.

I was working through some of these patterns and I noticed that the Son Montuno and Manbo are very similar and they're virtually the same. I don't know what to play and how to make them different from each other because they both sound the same.

Can someone explain to me how the rhythms are different? And how can I approach them on the drum set to make sound different from one another?

THANKS,
Lance

When I'm thinking of a drum set mambo, I'm hearing this feel (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Itfltvh1C2A). Montuno, on the other hand, makes me hear something like this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QQD6wX7wDjs).

I still don't get it. I just know that a Son Montuno is slower than a Mambo. They're so similar...
