I'm about to purchase some drums and I cant decide which size bass drum I want.

the depth is going to be 14" so it'd be nice to go for the 24" to get that deeper sound. One problem about going for the 24" is that im worried about how high my rack toms are going to sit. I like to play with my drums relatively flat (not angled to face me).

What do you guys think?

Should I go for the 22 or the 24? Anyone find that the 24 forces you to place the toms really high/angle them?

all comments appreciated :D

If you're running a 22 inch kick now, simply move your rack toms 2" higher. That's where they'd be if your kick was a 24.

Yeah, I'm not really running anything right now aside from an old e-kit (DT-Express II). I don't have my own acoustic kit at the time being to figure that out but I'm about to purchase one. I use to play a crummy CB kit with my last band and I'm not even sure what size bass was on that but the rack toms where kind of awkward. I had to angle the larger rack tom (I think it was a 14") quite a bit or else the bottom would come in contact with the bass if I hit it.

I'm probably gonna head over to tomlee or long and mcquade and see how a 22 versus a 24 feels but if anyone has any other advice let me know pls :)

hey i have a question similar to original poster. I'm gonna get a new set with 13, 16, and 18 toms and I'm having trouble picking out a bass drum size. I have a 22 now and i like it. But with these bigger tom sizes will the kick sound weak? I'm having trouble picking out between a 22 and 24. Could anyone help? Thanks a lot.

It's not a big deal, don't over-think it. You'll find a comfort zone and adjust to the new height. If you like your kick, you'll tolerate a short period of adjustment. ;)

a 16" rack tom... hmm i think it would depend more on how deep it is and what kind of tom mounts you use... mine are going to be 8x12 and 10x14
16" rack is probably gonna be huge...

How tall are you (no disrespect intended for anyone under 6 feet!!!)?

If 6' or taller am sure you'll do just fine with a 24" BD and toms adjusted as you like and feel more comfortable with. However, as someone else already pointed out using a 22" BD with rack toms adjusted to satisfy your needs will work just fine too.

Am 6' 2" tall and find that as long as the rack toms are adjusted within my comfort zone that am fine playing 20", 22", and 24" bass drums.
In fact, I can't hardly wait for the Pearl drum rack we bought last week to show up so can try my son's recently acquired Legend drum set, which has a 16x20 bass drum; first time that I'll playing with toms mounted in such a way!...

hmm yeah I'm just a bit over 6'1" so I was thinking that if I sit high enough I should be able to get my toms at the right angle on the 24" BD. tomorrow afternoon I will sit behind some bass drums and see how it feels.

Other option would be to not mount them on your bass but use a stand or clamps to get them off the bass.

Uhmmm...if you're playing a DTX, then how do you know you'll be uncomfy w/ a 24?? Heck, you'd be un-comfy with a 22, yes, ...am I missing something?

I played in a band for 4 years with a shitty acoustic kit and I had problems with the rack toms. My band broke up last year and since then I've only had my DTX. Basically I'm investing all my money that I saved over this last year into a drum kit and I wanna make sure I get the right sizes. 24" is a pretty large Bass drum imo. I was advised to get the 24 though because in the series that im buying from Tempus, the depth is only 14". I don't like a really a big bass drum, not because of the sound, but because I like to have my toms sit low.

Simply put... my DTX is only what i've played at home and infact i've probably accumulated more time on a crappy acoustic kit at jam/practice sessions and gigs. I've borrowed kits too for some shows and i've found things i've liked and things I hated. I have no kit at home to see how toms will sit on a 24BD.

Anyways off to the music store
bye!

Don't compromise the sound you want because of tom height. Mount the toms on a separate/dedicated stand......

You can almost always get the drums into the position you find effective.

A two inch difference in this case is minimal, and you have about the same "personal dimensions" as myself and another poster here, so you can really afford to focus on sound and feel at this point.

The difference is similar to a comparison between 20" and 22". 20's are punchier, where 22's are more well-rounded. Moving up to a 24" just takes that 22" sound and adds some more girth to it. Or, you can look at it from the Bonham point of view, and tune the bigger drum higher to get a "low" note without sacrificing bounce or playability (it's not like a 24" bass drum is going to sound like a 14" tom, even if you crank it).
